Ok, all hypothetical situations aside, let's get back on point.
I wouldn't reject evidence for existence of a god on a basis of fear. I reject current arguments for a gods existence for the same reason modern science does - lack of real evidence.
I'm not scared of the possibility of god. That's not why i'm an atheist, but if fear of god keeps you in line, whatever works. I don't need that fear to function and be a good human being.

YOU can look at the data (the evidence) and do several things - misunderstand it, ignore it, misinterpret it.

But regardless of the findings, would it bother you personally, if your children grew up, and then told you they were gay? Would you feel as though you've failed as a parent? Would you think "if only I took him to soccer practice more often" or "if only I didn't let him cook with his mother in the kitchen so often"?
