  • I forgot to say, I put the RAM in exactly the same model Acer One 533.

  • I bought my RAM before watching your video. I bought 2GB of Crucial PC3-10600 CL9. The really strange thing is: the RAM worked without any problems! I didn't think it would after your warning video but it did :)

  • ありがとうおねーさん。

    とっても役に立ちました!!!

  • Just did this upgrade, but the instructions under the keyboard say that you have to undo just 2 screws [both marked with (1)]. I undid those two, and the bottom cover popped out easily (that's 5 screws less to undo). Also worth mentioning that the three clips need to be pushed upwards (i.e. towards the battery).

  • Could you put a link to the part in the description ?

  • Thanks for this! Upgraded my 533's RAM in under 10 mins thanks to your video.

I too, ordered my RAM from Crucial.com. On their site, just choose "Shop By Manufacturer" and it will give you the correct RAM.

No idea if it's high or low density, but it worked without issue. :)

  • Recently I bought a used emachines E355 which is same as Acer aspire one 533. I followed your video bought one Patriot PC3-8500 2GB but the computer won't boot. I tried Kingstone 2GB and same thing, won't boot. Finally I went to store tried PC3-6400 and PC3 -1333, you know what? Both of them WORK!!!

  • Great Video, Thanks! I was having trouble lifting the keyboard, the three black pushable tabs at the top were holding me back the most. I used a Ram chip I had removed from my toshiba notebook when I upgraded it to 8gb and it seems to be working fine, in case anyone is interested It's a Samsung PC3-10600s - 09 - 11 - B2, Model #M471B5773DH0-CH9, 2 of these came factory installed in my new Toshiba L745 (I hate buying laptops from Walmart but the price is the best) BTW I hate my Acer Netbook

  • Nice video very interesting instructions :)..ty for help...btw u are very cute :)

  • Hi,

im using a Acer One Happy 2. Any differences in steps? since my is a newer model? and does it support 4GB of Memory?

  • Hello, thank you very much for your explain. long time i search for open my Em533

    Thank you again

  • After watching this video, I am planning to upgrade my laptop with Crucial CT25664BC1067 2 GB 204-PIN PC3-8500 SODIMM DDR3 Memory Module that is available on amazon. Could you please tell me if this is correct or not ?

  • Can you put an annotation with an arrow pointing to the screw you missed? :)

  • do u think u could be able to show us how to upgrade the cpu in it please

  • @avnish958 It's impossible. A new netbook would be cheaper :)

  • @Aliamentation "impossible"...why? Soldered?

  • @avnish958 step one, put it in a blender

  • EM355 MODEL PAV70 has 8 screws

  • Thanks a lot

    I'm doing that today

I hope it works with 4 gb ram too

  • @igrecman The CPU in the AAO 553 will not support more than 2GB of ram, at least on my model. Check the CPU you have (should be listed on the box) on the intel website, under specifications for that CPU it will tell you the maximum supported ram.

If you put 4gb, the best situation would be that it worked and uses only 2GB of it. I believe that the computer will not boot with 4gb stick in. Please let us know! :)

  • @Aliamentation

Thanks, i found out before i went to the store so i bought only a 2 gb stick

The upgrade is done without any probleme. I didn't remove the keyboard at all. I was able to remove the backing with my nails and a small flat srewdriver. Did you try it?

Thank you very much. Your video helped à lot.

  • Thank you.

  • i would just like to mention. if anybody watching this video has a ACER EMACHINES 355 MODEL PAV70 the procedure is identical.( do not attempt to remove the seven screws on the outer edge of the underside of the netbook ) follow the instructions in the video,

  • thank you for the video, very interesting, stephen, mallorca, spain

  • A great video and I agree with other former or present service techs that you have done a better job of presentation than one finds, even from professionals .. using Steps and menus, good lighting , excellent diction, showing the process clearly and at an excellent speed. Very informative with the comments also, excepting th kiddies who have to try and spoil everything. Lady, you should be on TV doing whatever instructional show you are interested in.

  • big helps. thank you

  • this was THE BEST INSTRUCTION video i have seen on youtube. i followed these instructions last night and upgraded TWO netbooks. this video was very helpful. nice work!

  • Great video - thank you so much :)

  • thanks

£10.99 for 2gb ram from 7 day shop

  • Awesome... you go girl! Impressive... you did well... the most difficult part I found was removing the keyboard.. argh... Mine popped on the middle above the function keys, before that I was really getting frustrated trying to remove and one screw stripped but all and all it worked and voila.. my Emachines 355 is now boasting 2 gb. You made it look so easy ... you inspire confidence. Thanks so much.

  • one question . Why didn't u just unscrewed a bottom panel ? It would be alot easier.

  • @speakers11223 It WOULD be a lot easier, that's a great idea. The reason is this: there are not screws on the bottom panel, or rather, this video does show you how to unscrew the bottom panel, but to access the screws you have to open up the computer.

If you have screws on the bottom of your netbook, you probably have a different model (ie. not the Acer Aspire One 533).

The real question is: why did acer not make the ram slot easily accessible?

  • Thanks a lot, this video's very useful.

  • good video^^

  • This looks the same as The Packard Bell Dot S Netbook. Do you know if this would be the same for the packard bell? Becuase they look awfully simular.

  • Used this guide to upgrade my D255 which uses the same exact type of RAM. I ended up getting Corsair High Density from the Micro Center that is nearby my home. I just compared the specs on the memory to the one on Crucial and they were identical. I couldn't get a screwdriver between the keyboard frame and the laptop's plastic surround so I used a box-cutter blade and a credit card heh... Worked like a charm though with no scratches and it popped right back in. Thanks for the video!

  • Many thanks for the video. Followed your clear instructions and I now have 2GB in my Netbook.

  • 'something pokey aha

  • Thank you! This was a great video that clearly explained what to do and made my upgrade low-stress and successful! Thanks!

  • I just followed this video to upgrade my eMachines em355 from 1GB to 2GB of RAM, on the inside it looks identical to the Acer Aspire One, the only change was that I only needed to take out 4 screws marked with a "1" below the keyboard, then the back panel easily snapped off. Tried at first with 2GB of PC10700 CL9 Kingston RAM and no dice, tried again with 2GB of PC8500 CL7 Kingston RAM and now Windows 7 is quite faster. Thanks for yout great video!

  • This worked perfectly for me, thanks! I ordered the RAM from crucial two days ago and now I've got a 2GB netbook. Result. I used a thin metal screwdriver to prise open the keyboard - this was a mistake as it has slightly bent the netbook's frame. So watch out! It's my own fault though, Aliamentation recommends using plastic tools and so do I!

  • Did the keyboard tabs come back out for you?

  • Awesome Video,,simple and easy thanks for taking the time,,it saved me from having to go thru all the support pdf's to take apart the computer,,and love how you use Ubuntu! everyone should be using it, it's free! and works better than windows, so thanks again

  • Thanks.

  • It did work! I put 2Gb ddr3 so-dimm and now computer is much better w/o hd swapping. Thank you for tutorial :)

  • Nice upgrade video - that's what I need for my aspire! I have to try out and I will tell did I succeed. Greeting from Finland!

  • @CuntryGent Hey. 1) Nope, there is nothing else you will have to do! 2) Nope, it will not effect anything you have on your hard-drive (hard-drive and memory are too separate things).

Of course it's a good idea to back up your stuff before you do anything major to your computer :)

  • I can confirm that the 2GB memory module CT25664BC1339 works perfectly on the AO533.

The best way was to remove the battery to allow some flex in the plastic surround and then use a screwdriver to push the top, middle and right tabs in so the keyboard lifts slightly. Then use the screwdriver to prise up the keyboard from the top-middle enough to grab with your hands. It'll come free easily on the right-side. Top-left takes a little bit of brute force to pop the keyboard up

  • Can't get the keyboard off :(

The tab near the Esc key is fixed and can't be pushed back. I can get the right hand of the keyboard out, but the left side is stuck because of the tab, and sliding a credit card doesn't work - seems to be no way of taking it out without snapping the keyboard in half

  • @stupidjunk878 Hi, it's annoying, you kinda gotta make it so the keyboard arches slightly in the middle, long-wise, which should allow you to get the left corner out from under the tab. Ie. instead of just pulling up on the right-corner so it folds upward like the corner of a piece of paper, you sort of have to try make it bend down as though you were trying to make the whole keyboard into a upside-down half-pipe, longwise, while not losing the right corner. This is all subtle, don't snap it!

  • @Aliamentation Hi, can I put 4gb on this? I bought mine just yesterday and its too slow sometimes it doesnt move for 10 to 15 mins I'm so upset! info please!!!

  • @ZarCus1984 Hi, the maximum memory that the CPU will support is 2GB so no, you cannot put in 4gb.

If you just bought yours yesterday, probably it is Windows 7 doing it's first-run routine. Let it do it's whole thing, then go through the control panel and remove-software on all the crap acer pre-installs. Get rid of Norton completely and install AVG free, remove all the acer stuff, all the games, etc. Then get CCleaner and turn off any unneccesary programs that run at startup. After, should work

  • @ZarCus1984 Also: remember putting in extra ram will void your memory, if there really is a problem with your computer, exchange it first. Even Windows 7 doesn't run slow at all on mine. If you really want things to fly, install Ubuntu Linux :)

  • @Aliamentation Ah ok! one more question if you don't mine! can I use another brand of PC3-8500 (SiliconPower) instead of Crucial? It's only available here in com. shop near my place!

by the way thanks for info!

  • @ZarCus1984 Hi, as mentioned a few times, you should be able to use another brand, you can even use PC3-10500, but it MUST be a high-density SoDIMM. The reason I suggested crucial is because they let you exchange the ram if it's the wrong type. :) It will be HD if there are two big black chips on each side, instead of four black chips on each side of the SoDIMM. People will tell you that "both types should work" and that it doesn't make sense that LD doesn't work, but it just doesnt, u need HD.

  • @Aliamentation Thank you very much for the information! And I really appreciate your advice!

It's super fast now after I changed and remove the unnecessary staff... Thank you

  • Thank you, thank you! Your clear video showed me how to reconnect the keyboard cable after installing 2GB in my D255E. Should never have disconnected the damn thing. I struggled with it for way too long....over the clip? under the clip? Not much room in there. Finally got it...under the clip of course. Only problem now is that some of the spring-loaded clips across the top didn't pop back out. Any suggestions how to correct that?

  • Well done Acer on putting the memory in such a inaccessible place, unlike any other fucking laptop in the world. Great job Acer!

  • hi does this upgrade make a vast change on the netbook speed?

    thanks

  • @dragonlong007 Well, "vast" is a big work, it makes a difference, especially when it comes to memory intensive things. It's worth it for me - remember though, you will void your warranty.

  • dance with me, pretty girl

  • Jeg oppgraderte min acer aspire one 533 til 2 gb ram. Bestilte fra komplett.no. Enkelt å bytte, raskere pc :)

  • Great video

You should make a video about make hackintosh

    or

    Dual boot mac and windows

  • @Zogbadboy2 Just mac and windows? That would mean leaving out the most useful operating system (linux) ;)

Sorry, being funny, however, it is actually easier to have at least a small linux partition so you can rescue windows and mac osx when they mess up. There are lots of good guides about doing double and triple boot already... most of it is being patient and being prepared to retry four or five times. Thanks for the idea though, I'll consider it :)

  • You know you see many of these help videos on youtube and most of them suck. I'm a tech for IBM and this was a very aspecific computer to find this process for. I think you presentation was very good and professional. Just a note that when you are removing the screws you need only remove the 4 labeled 1 or l. Love the lap and if you change the page settings to 4096 in both pagesys boxes under the advanced settings in system properties then perfomance, you will find a nice speed boost too

  • Was it worth it? adding 1 gb?

  • Good tutorial!

  • Thank you for the tutorial. I upgraded my Acer AO522 using your method and it worked. Very awesome.

    Thank you very much!

  • @G0OS3 What memory module have you upgraded to? Did you stick to 2GB PC3-8500 as in the video?

  • @Zenthar I used the Kingston 2GB 1333MHz DDR3 non-ECC CL9 SODIMM (KVR1333DS9/2G)

    alternatives are:

    Corsair CMSO4GX3M1A1333C9 4GB 1X4GB DDR3-1333 CL9-9-9-24 204PIN SODIMM Memory

Kingston 4 GB SODIMM (Kingston KVR1066D3S7/4G)

probably more..but those are the alternatives i found searching through forums. All i really needed was 2GB..my acer ao522 is zooming. Very happy with it, good for price.

    Goodluck

  • btw, on the AO522, there is a better way to remove the keyboard. take the battery out. look into the battery space. to the right there is a little opening in the plastic with metal covering it. this is the bottom of the keyboard. push on it w/ something dull (i used the butt end of a pen) and your keyboard will pop up. no need to scratch the edges.

  • @keredson I have tried to find the slot you are talking about to remove the keyboard and its just not happening for me. Is there a way where you can show me a pic of the slot you are referring to?

  • @keredson Awesome tip! Thanks! I will do that when upgrading.

  • This also works for Aspire One 522, I was looking for a video for the 522, and this one works.

    Thanx

  • I can't get the keyboard to budge at all, all I can get to move is the black covering. how did you manage to get under the metal back?

  • @DrightJKayorent If you pry off the black covering on the back, you do not need to remove anything else - the ram slot is visible and available. This is really NOT recommended. There are two screws holding it on and you will pop the thermal paste connection if you pry off the black thing. Just very carefully use a thin metal screwdriver and pop-up the keyboard starting at the top-right corner, like on the video. If I redo the video I will do it slower, sorry if it was not clear.

  • @Aliamentation Actually I decided to dual boot linux instead =P

  • Habe mir die DDR3 PC3-8500 CL7 RAM von Kingston gekauft. Hat nicht funktioniert!

Danach 4 andere Sorten, auch nichts.

Am Schluss habe ich den Typ Kingston KAC-MEMHS/2G eingebaut. Super wie es läuft. Aspire one 533 hat folgende RAM Daten 5/5/5/12 Row Refresh 38 cl und Comand Rate 2T. Eigentlich Wertze eines DDR2 Single RAM'S

Upgrade Video ist Super, besten Dank

  • @DrightJKayorent Getting the keyboard off is the hardest, had to see other netbook vids to help, but this one was the best video for me. thanks a lot

  • I just installed CT25664BC1339 2GB

I can confirm that you can also use CT25664BC1339 for Acer 533

  • Thank you U helped me I used ur tuto even if mine is D255

  • Very nice video and i loved how you use the Acer Aspire One 533 Becasue thats my favourite netbook!!! Please do more.....Upgrading software or whatever!!

  • what is this...linux?

  • @monstercameron I run principally linux (Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick right now) but my machines are usually triple boot - Linux, Windows, and MacOSX. The screen you see at boot-up is a GRUB boot screen (let's you choose the operating system), the background picture for my grub screen is stolen from an Eric Drooker book :)

  • @Aliamentation oh i know, i just dont see alot a linux videos on netbooks, i run ubuntu 10.10 on ma desktop

  • thank you this video was very helpful. i ordered the ram that crucial had recommended *without* specifying high density (part #CT1313863) 2GB 204-PIN pc3 8500 CL7. Installation was easy and booted no problem.

Be careful not to poke in the little tabs on the top part of the keyboard frame that hold the keyboard in place; they are a bitch to get back into place.

  • Thanks a lot ! By the way, you are super cute.. :)

  • Thanks! Good job considering all your other videos are about food lol. I looked for this after I got my RAM! Luckily the one I did get works!

    Mushkin 2GB 204-Pin PC3-8500 SO-DIMM

  • Why are there no proper instructions on how to get the keyboard off?

I refuse to just gouge about randomly inside my lovely net book.

  • @BDGregory Hi, sorry if it's not clear in video. The response: there is no easy, perfect, way to do it. It's annoying & fiddly.

Start with a thin flat screwdriver in the top right corner. You need to insert it in between the keyboard & the casing. Have another flat object like a credit card nearby so that you can stick it under the corner once it's up. Once you have the corner, gently work around the edge with the credit-card and pop all the little catches. Don't push in the tabs. Good luck!

  • @Aliamentation and, if you're careful, it's not too bad and will only leave a little scratch on the keyboard casing which you can touch-up with a sharpie (mentioned below).

ps. don't blame me: blame stupid acer for not making a simple little ram port on the bottom.

pps. as for those advocating prying the bottom off... there are definitely screws holding things in place as well as the thermal paste you risk popping... I would like to see the video of it but I do NOT recommend it to folks.

  • @BDGregory No digging required. I use my GPS suction cup, apply a drop of hairgel on the cup and apply it to the bottom cover of the 522 netbook. Pull up on the suction cup and the cover will come partly off. Clean off the gel on the cover before proceeding with opening the cover wide enough to remove the 1GB memory and install your new 2GB memory. I use a Corsair 2GB 1333 MHz CL9. Works like a charm! Enjoy!!

  • @rwngui But both this video and the Acer 533 service manual agree that there are two screws holding the bottom cover on.

  • @BDGregory My Acer 522 maybe the twin Canadian model of the US Acer 533. The cover closer to the headphone/microphone jacks came open quite easily using the suction cup. Mine had no screw holding the back cover. As I tried to open the cover just wide enough to replace the memory, the center of the cover releases and I had clear access to the memory.

  • @rwngui So did the bottom cover come right off or not?

  • @BDGregory practically all off. I let it hinge on the last 2 tabs. less dismantalling is easier restoring for me. get the memory installed and start enjoying the new toy.

  • The Ram is located at the lower right hand corner (if you turn the netbook upside down with the battery compartment facing away from you).

I just replaced mine with the crucial 2G ram without removing the entire panel. Just pry open starting near the battery and work your way to the lower right. It should have enough room to replace the ram. I will post a video soon.

  • Comment removed

  • awesome job hon. real simple and straight to the point :)

  • I used a crucial 2GB DDR3 PC10600 CL9 SODIMM (crucial part number: CT25664BC1339) and it worked fine. Getting the keybord out was a trick (the "tab" over the ESC key wouldn't press in)

  • Да, если так херово и грубо работают в сервисе, то похоже придется ремонтировать свой комп самому. Хоть бы тряпочку положила под него. Елозит им по столу как по шкурке. Когда экран со снятой клавиатурой закрывала, я держался за яйца.

  • I had to unscrew even the screw next to the black paint - on the back lid there are 7, not 6 places where screws go in.,

  • The Crucial 2GB PC3-8500 did not work in my case. Going to try the PC3-1066 Crucial but have to re-order.

  • @SUPERPCC Like I mentioned, you MUST order high-density SODIMMs. Call Crucial and ask them to exchange your ram for a high-density one. If you try at PC3-10600 (make sure you get a HD one), let us know if it works.

  • @Aliamentation

Thanks. Do you have the actual Crucial Part Number?

  • @Aliamentation

Do you have the Crucial Part Number?

  • @Aliamentation I tried some Kingston 2GB PC3-10600 memory and it too did not work. Could you please post the Crucial part number so I can find it that way? Thanks!

  • @SUPERPCC Like I mentioned already, it has to be a high-density (HD) SoDIMM. The part number doesn't make any difference. You need to telephone Crucial, tell them the system you have (AO533), and tell them you NEED a high-density SoDIMM, not a low-density one. If that doesn't work, let us know. Up until now, people I know who have tried HD SoDIMMs had it work, those who didn't, didn't. Regardless of the "part-number" (Crucial substitutes parts that it feels are equivalent anyway).

  • The Cruciail 2GB PC3-8500 did not work in my case. Going to try the PC3-1066 Crucial but have to re-order.

  • I bought the Crucial PC3-8500 memory and it didn't work for me. Don't know if I got a bad 2GB module or if I really need the PC3-1066 at this point..I updated the BIOS from v1.02 to 1.15 as well. Didn't help...8-(

  • This video became reference very much.

  • solo la memoria crucial CT1313863 es compatible con la acer 533? no hay otro modelo compatible?

  • you are great !

  • you are great !

  • I did it as well, works perfectly! Great tutorial lady, thumbs up :D

  • my keyboard clips wont come back out? right above the del button.

  • Very nice video. Im going to be getting an Acer Aspire one 533 for christmas. Glad I found a good video on how to upgrade the ram! So the screw that you said in the video does not need to be undone really does to avoid popping the paste? Thanks in advance, and again Awesome video. Keep up the good work :D

  • @DeTantalus Hello, yes, you do need to unscrew the other screw. I popped the paste the first time (whoops). If you do, it seems to be ok but it's better not to.

  • I got a 2Gbx8 chips S.O.DIMM and my AO533 is now worked on 2GB RAM. I just choose a DDR3-10600 at Akihabara. Just 2 screws were needed to undo. Those are marked the number "1" with circle and after undo those screws, need to push marked the number "2" hole with a screwdriver. Your video is very helpful. Thanks.

  • UPDATE: under the keyboard there are only 3 screws you need to undo. One of them was NOT in the video (3rd). Locate the big silver square, this is the "bottom" of the hard-drive (HD)

1- just above the HD (should be a picture of popping off the back)

2- just to the right of the HD (there should be a picture of a screwdriver)

3- !important! to the left of the top left corner of the HD. Mine had black paint around it. If you forget this you will pop the heat-transfer paste (comp will still work)

  • @Aliamentation if that seems too complex, just undo all 7 screws to be sure, the 6 that say M6 and the 1 that is painted black to the left of the top-left of the hard-drive.

  • @Aliamentation Yep - undo all 7 screws, it only takes an extra 10 seconds. Also, if you scratch it up when removing the keyboard like I did, touch up with a little black sharpie. Thanks for this Aliamentation.

  • @Aliamentation just updated mine - first time ever taking apart computer. Worked great except the DEL button poppoed off and I can't get it back on. Ideas?

  • @peacepad23 Hi, popped of keys are very annoying to put back in, I did the same thing installing this in a friend's computer. These are my suggestions: a) be calm b) be gentle c) be perseverant d) try to figure out the mechanism.

We actually had to half-pop off another key on the top row (the keys on the top row are different then the lower keys) to figure out how the mechanism works.

They are all little plastic parts so don't break anything.

  • @Aliamentation just updated mine - first time ever taking apart computer. Worked great except the DEL button popped off and I can't get it back on. Ideas?

  • Just upgraded mine using your video and info, the keyboard didn't pop off quite as easy as yours, but I got there in the end! Woo :D

  • @Jamiewharton Hooray! Yes, I had a bit of practice as I had bought the wrong RAM at first. I wish there was an easier way to pop the keyboard. Glad it worked out for you :)

  • Thank you very much!! So the density was the problem!

I just made an order from crucial. Wish I knew it earlier..

  • Does it have to be necessarly CL7 or could it be 9 or any other?

  • @appleX2leopard I believe it must be CL7 and it must be high-density. Other than that, PC3-8500 works and it is possible that PC3-10600 will work, if it is CL7 and high-density. I used a PC3-10600 CL9 chip that would not start. Someone else had lockup problems. Please let us know which one works for you :)

  • @roachnugget1 It has a "rocker button" I guess. I don't mind it at all, it works fine. I wouldn't say it's stiff. Sorry I can't be more informative :)

  • Hiya! I have an older model acer and I'm thinking about getting this one after seeing your video but I have 1 quick question... On my older model instead of having 2 buttons on the touch pad it only has 1 rocker-type button that is very stiff even after 2 years of constant use... On the newer model is it still a rocker button and if so is it really stiff?

  • When I have more time I will try to do a video on how to ply open the backcover of my AO533 WITHOUT taking the keyboard out. It can be done with ease. And I have done that twice now -- removing and replacing the RAM.

  • I tried the RAM suggested by Crucial "No Joy" the system booted up once and then refused to post. I tried the RAM suggested at the Kingston site "2GB 1066MHz Single Rank Module" Part Number KAC-MEMHS/2G. It has been running with no problems. It appears that the "Single Rank" is needed with my net book.

  • @MrMikemarcoe Thanks for the info. The good thing about Crucial is that they take the ram back if it doesn't work. 1066MHz RAM is PC3-8500 so the clock speed is the same, if I understand, we need "High-Density" which is what they mean by Single Rank (the high-density chips have 1 rank of 4 chips on each side=8 chips, the low-density ones have 2 ranks of 4 chips on each side=16 chips). The guy at Crucial told me I was crazy thinking that the LD won't work, but I suggest specifically asking for HD

  • Could you zoom in on that necklass

  • I've been looking for this for months. Acer wouldn't tell me how to open this sucker.Thank you for making this great informative video. You are a goddess!

  • @odin203 Thanks! Good luck! Remember your warranty might be at stake :) Also, you only need to remove a couple of the screws, not all six, but I suggest just taking out all six cause it's easier :)

  • If I send you my notebook would you install 2gb of RAM for me

  • @paperbachwriter1 Sorry, I don't think that's a good idea. I wouldn't want to be responsible if it didn't work or if you needed your warranty in the future :) Plus I'd have to charge you, for a $300 laptop, it's worth trying it yourself I think, it's pretty easy.

  • Tori Amos I didn't know you did tech videos

  • You had any problems running windows 7 on this since upgrading? I've got the chipset ready to go.. I'm just a noob at opening things up and I'm scared I'll break something xD lol

  • @inmedx Hi, I have had no problems at all since upgrading. I use Ubuntu Linux primarily, although I did test Windows 7 with the new ram quite thoroughly (had it run some virus checkers, copy some big files, hibernated it on and off a couple of times, and left it running for like 12 hours. No problems.

Please note this probably voids your warranty. That being said, it's easy. Just be gentle and take your time. Especially with the keyboard cable and ram, don't break them :)

  • @Aliamentation thanks for your help :)

  • hey great video, I have the same netbook and im looking to upgrade, can you tell me any cheaper ram models.?

  • Thanks for making this video, worked a treat. Was nice to listen to Tori while doing it too!

  • you don't need yo remove the screws. I was able to pry out a great portion of the back panel without removing the keyboard or any screws. The only thing that held the panel from being completely removed is a long black tube that extend from the back panel into the side of the hard drive --poke the hole next to the hard drive (this will dislodge the back panel). The rest of the panel is only held by tabs. For replacing RAM you can ply the panel out enough w/o removing it.

  • @ibmusa Could you make a video showing how to do this I was thinkiing the same thing but I am chicken to open my computer

  • @ibmusa

What do you mean "a great portion of the back panel"?

Surely you need to get it right off before you have any hope of replacing the RAM.

  • Thank you so much!!

BTW, what OS are you running with 2gigs?

  • OSX via GRUB? Steve Jobs would not be a happy camper. I applaud you.

  • @PookySharif Nothing like a triple booting laptop :) Steve Jobs should love me: I only use OSX for two reasons: 1) to make sure my web pages work in Mac and 2) to help me repair all my mac-loving friends' computers when they break, which they seem to do much more often than the mac commercials would have you believe. In other words, I use it to help mac users keep using their operating system.

It also helps for benchmarking OSs: Ubuntu runs way faster than Windows or MacOS, btw.

  • @Aliamentation

Really? No driver issues? I might do that. I run Lucid Lynx on another machine, but I was worried about stability on such a new computer.

I think a dedicated Ubuntu netbook might be in order. I already feel like my 7 starter install is loosing steam. I love 7 pro on my i7 monster desktop, but it really doesn't cut it as a lightweight os.

    How is the boot time?

  • @PookySharif No driver issues on linux - linux is quite a long way past that these days. The only thing I've ever had trouble with is Canon scanners. Of course there are some driver issues on MacOSX - I have to use a usb adapter for wireless... I think that's about it though.

    Ubuntu boot-time: 22s

    Windows 7 boot-time: 52s

I use mine under linux for photo/audio editing. You can multi-track with it. I have used it for limited video editing. I don't know if it's light-weight but it's fast!

  • @Aliamentation

forgot to mention: MacOS Snow Leopard boot time: 50s.

To be fair, Ubuntu Lucid (which I am running) put a lot of work into fast boot times. Still, it's impressive :)

  • @Aliamentation

So I finally installed Lucid. Guess what? Wireless driver issues. Did you have any problems with them?

  • @PookySharif Hey! I saw your post about network drivers, it seems like you probably fixed them. I think you need to enable the proprietary broadcom drivers. If you go to system->administration->proprietary drivers, then select the Broadcom_STA driver and reboot. I can't remember, it might have don't it automatically for me :)

  • @Aliamentation Way ahead of you. I'm no advanced user by any stretch, but I know my way around the basic utilities. Standard 32 bit ubuntu displays the drivers but will not activate them- I get an error message. Netbook remix, which I prefer with such little screen real estate, doesn't even detect the hardware. You can download the driver from broadcom, but I can't figure out how to compile the tarball the right way.

  • @PookySharif Hmm, I don't remember having any problems, on the other hand I am using 64-bit ubuntu. One reason to upgrade to the Acer Aspire One 533 is the new cpu which is 64-bit and supports ddr3 ram. Did you try 64-bit ubuntu? Is your system up-to-date when you try to run the proprietary drivers program? Sorry you're having problems.
