  • That was my favorite song when i was 4. I'm embarrassed to say that up until now I thought it was Roboto not Rubato.

  • @FishyIceCream You shouldn't be embarrassed. The joke of this video is that they misused "Rubato". The song is definitely "Mr. Roboto".

  • RUBATO..

  • Yay Styx!!!

  • Rubato literally means "robbed time." Pretty much what you've got to do is when you're playing a piece, steal some of one note and stick it on to a different note.... with your SOUL AND FEELINGS AND HEART. Unfortunately for us left brained people, it needs to spring from some real artistic inspiration... even if you copy another person's musical ideas exactly it might fool a listeners ear but you won't fool their emotions. HOORAY FOR MUSIC DORKS!!

  • I LOVE Styx! They are amazing in concert =]

  • hey i am special

  • You guys are hilarious!

  • Lolz.

  • ha i knew what rubato was already because my chorus teacher told me i feel special now

  • I knew it as well cause i play the piano, so you're not special :-)

  • I still don't know what rubato means.. am

    I special? O_o

  • rubato is deviations in tempo, especially found in romantic music, such as Chopin

  • Medsas, do you know WHEN to use them? Is there a general rule, such as, use them as you go up, or down the scale? I wish I knew when and HOW to use them. Without them, you're simply playing notes. I can tell a huge difference between those who use rubatos and those who don't, like me. My playing is so dull and unprofessional sounding because I don't know WHEN and HOW to use rubatos in piano. Do you know? Can you help me grasp the concept in actual playing?

    Thanks so much!

  • Here's the thing for rubato, there's no set formula. Here's a quote that explains it well:

  • "Do you think that the concept of rubato is properly understood today?

Well, there are many pianists today who use a mechanical rubato: a slight accelerando, a slight diminuendo. Rubato must emerge spontaneously from the music, it can't be calculated but must be totally free. It's not even something you can teach: each performer must feel it on the basis of his or her own sensitivity. There's no magic formula: to assume otherwise would be ridiculous. Rubato isn't something you can rationalize."

  • Rubato is something you feel. When you really understand the piece you are playing then there some passages that you just know you gotta accelerate or slow down because you want to highlight an important note. Often what happens in Chopin is that you have a very fast passage which resolve at a very soft tonic. Usually you want to start that passage fast and slow down to gently arrive at the end. Another thing to consider is to think of the pieces "as a wave".

  • Some pieces must be played with the rhythm of the waves.

  • that was pretty funny... like the burning remote one too... that was cool.
