For anybody thinking they have to go out and buy some 4 thousand dollar les paul to have a good sound or play like this? Look what jim is playing on...a standard telecaster(prolly tweaked to his liking of course) but nonetheless it's a standard $400 telecaster
@yohomeygsup Hate to break it to you but it's actually his signature Tele that Fender designed for him and it costs about $1200. Although, yes, you don't need to spend that much on a guitar, I just figured I should let you know haha.
@DJSumthinCool well i realize he's playing "his" telecaster, guess i shoulda specified, that type of tele though is only around $400, and even less if you buy a squier haha
im not gonna hate on mick or anything,he does great riffs..but hes just horrible at solos...if you listen to them on the records they all sound the same except for vermillion....jims the guy for solos..he changes them up on stage and hes more melodic and diverse...listen to gehenna or the child of burning time or one of his stone sour solos their all so melodic
come on guys. no need to argue about whos better between jim and mick. both are really good. differences are that mick is more of a heavier player, while jim is more melodic.
metal guitarists are the worst guitarists I think. I mean yes they are the most skilled but when it comes to riff making, and making the best sound Graham Coxon and Thurston Moore are the greatest. James root is a better guitarist than Mick
@tbitsu27 Sigh, countless and countless times must I keep explaining to people, it's all just preference, I seriously think metal guitarists are the best and most versatile guitarists out there, look at Buckethead, that guy can play anything: Jordan, Soothsayer, etc.
Mick Thomson has precision, depth and technique. I've seen the guy play and he is very very good. Possibly the people who have criticised Mick's style of playing have very little experience other than listening to make a comparison. If you play guitar then you might appreciate how good Mick is.
fuck its too fucking fast, totally raped a good song. I hate it when a band ruins their own songs like that... respect to slipknot theyre fucking awesome but this is just terrible. Like Sepultura with Roots Bloody Roots also tends to be twice as fast
its not that they speed up their songs on purpose, its because they have their adrenaline pumping and tend to play it a little faster. besides nobody can play every solo 100% every time, especially live.
you cant blame them, jim said himself that when he does a solo in the studio, its off the top of his head and he doesnt wright it down ,but instead he records it and when its time to practis he goes back and listens to it to relearn it.
You just have to start the solo in the wrong fret and it all sounds fucked up. That could happen and isnt that bad. So i dont matter if it sounds alittle weird and not as perfect as on the record.
@DelayedandLethargic no originally it was all james in an interview james said some of my solos are 'psychosocial, dead memories, and sulfur basically all the new slipknot songs that have solos on them
You people should know how it is to perform live! Esp. when a song like PSYCHOSOCIAL is performed live with a faster tempo. The song itself has a killer tempo and putting it faster slaughters dude. That's a good job there
look guys you might think his playing is a bit sloppy but if you have noticed the song is played alot faster live and from being in a band my self it is harder to play a song in front of a big crowd and get it note perfect, you try going up on the rock AM ring stage and pulling off the solo note for note then you can criticize
maybe if my band had enough songs to fit a 90 minute set and the fan base then actualy we could and i don't care if theres a million peole because even if i did fuck up i wouldn't give two shits because most of the bands that play rock am ring suck anyway, but they do have good bands on the bill
@dropsykes True but Slipknot fucking rules and Mick and James are extremely clean players and the sound quality on this preformance is shit, but look up both of them playing and theirs obvious proof on how fluid and clean they play, and how perfect their tone is.
@dropsykes well, i know some bands like between the buried and me, and all there solo's r just to clean live, not downing on slipknot there a down band, but there solos could sounds better.
@dropsykes Word dude. Seriously, when people are listening to the record and it sounds awesome, well thats because they fucking played hundreds of tracks till they got one that was perfect for the song.
@Verraden live hes hellof out of key and adding just heavy distortion to your tone kills it, face it mick sucks now james is good, if you ask me paul, joey, and james should fpr , theor own band and ditch slipknot
since evry1 is giving their 2 cents, Mick's playing tends to be really sterile no big effects except on a few songs and just really fast runs and scales and all that good stuff. The problem is, as much as i love him, he doesnt always hit em, he really messed up when i saw em in baltimore on psychosocial in a few spots, hes still awesome. Jim is gods gift to music. He mixes in alot of melodic in2 the fast scales and is an autowah junky. He never does the same solo twice and it keeps it fresh.
@NumberFour09 If you watch there stuff live tho, they both change and mix up shit while playing solo's so alot of the time, parts of solos sound alot different. It's not that they fuck it up, they just change it around. I mean come on, you gotta change it up sometimes, must get sorta boring playing the same thing for like 300 shows or more.
@NumberFour09 Jim's actually said that the reason for that isn't so much as the desire to change it and play something new as it is that he can't remember the solo note for note and just plays it however he feels sounds good and is close to the original. He pretty much just plays whatever he feels like even in recording sessions. He was just then starting to learn actual scales when they made the album.
ur the lowest rated comment on the board. this is like going to a husker bar durring the super bowl and wearing the other team's jersy....megadeth is good but slipknot dominates!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
neither is lead...they share the solos, obviously as seen here, and they both play rhythm...just people think they're always HAS to be a lead and rhythm when theres more then one guitarist...so they started saying Mick was...Jim likes to add melody and such to the songs which is probabl why he was named rhythm guitarist but in reality...they both share the roles...
both sic guitarists, and this video is a horrible representation of them...they're both SO much better
if you want to play jim roots solo best thing to do is to turn your guitar on rythm and sweep rool your fingers its almost exactly if you watch his hands you can get it perfect
Fuck That, Jim Adds Melody To All Of Their Songs This Last Album Cycle. His Solos Are Insane, But I Dont Know. I Didnt Like Too Many Of His Solos During RAR And Download. hahha not true actually..i went to there concert on oct 20, james did every single solo and fukin perfectly, and through out the songs he would throw in his own little arppegios, mick just played rythem
