what sort of scales do you play when doing gypsy jazz? is there any chord progression that often shows up?

Almost exclusively arpeggios. A scale I do use is the mixolydian b9 b13 which is the same notes as the harmonic minor scale, but starting on the 5th note of the scale. Ex: C mixo b9 b13 = C, Db, E, F, G, Ab, Bb. This works over the key of Fm & implies C7b9. 1st song to learn is Minor Swing in Am. Am6 Dm6 E7/B Am6 Dm6 Am6 E7/B. 2bars each. 3 notes per chord. Am6= 6str. 5th fret. 4str. 4th fret. 3str. 5th fret. Same shape at 10th fret = Dm6, at7th fret =E7/B. Arpeggios & Emixo b9 b13 over all.

He is one of the greatest talents, ever! It is obvious, at this age he has truly mental image of notes at the guitar neck - he doesn't have to learn - he just must to sing the melody in his head, and fingers will follow to the right place. Practicing has a little influence in his case ;)
