Don't forget the old fashioned way that people used regular chairs with a cut-out hidden under a cushion and below the bucket. You can still see these sold on Ebay or at country auctions. There are a few websites out there which address "humanure" and the composting/recycling of human waste.
OK. A topic that I know well! W live in Ky. We have no toilet. Save yourself some $ and get a 5 gallon bucket from the paint dept in Walmart. Lid and bucket will be about $5. Save your $ on the enzymes. I use cedar chips Does fine. Dig yourself a hole for disposal.Take care where the run off goes.Throw organic material on it as it fills to keep down the smell. All the rest is money making WHOO HA! Nice Vid, but now you know that you don't have to spend $ on taking a crap.Be well.
Green wood sawdust is the key to no-stink, according to an article I read in Backwoods Home Magazine. I haven't tried it, but the author of the article built a plywood box with a hole and toilet seat, and had a 5 gal. bucket inside, and another bucket-o-green wood sawdust in his house! He claims it doesn't stink, it's his full time crapper, and the crazy nut even made his elderly mother use it during a visit. More power to him, I guess!
Yippie....!!! the old honey bucket... They do smell... but if you put it outside with a tarp, not an issue.. Inside the house... :( not so much.. check out lesson#4 on dot tngun dot com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/MD0535-Communicable-Diseases-Field-Sanitation.pdf A good topic, thanks for posting
Another option for the smell is a product called VoBan which is essentially a scented sawdust which is used to clean up vomit but would work for this as well. Its cheap and it works great.
as usual greeeat vid for those who are financally challanged brooklyn prepper covered this in his pandemic vid. dont have access to sawdust but i have a cat, and a have stockpiled kitty litter, can i use kitty litter?
WallyWorld sells a toilet seat that fits on a bucket for like eight bucks.. basically the samething..good to bring up subjets like this as they are rarely talked about.
@copingwiththetimes What a crappy topic, lol. One that a lot of folks overlook for sure. I will try to find my pdf file on field sanitation for you too. Lots of very good info in that for a grid down situation.
@minbound LOL crappy indeed! That would be great if you could find that PDF. There aren't as many sources for info on this out there as I thought there would be.
Great video! Just wondering.. would it be cheaper to buy the Enzymes in the box in town that is made for septic tanks? I don't know how much the little packs cost so that's why I am asking. I know the box of RidX in town is about 7 to 8 bucks. TJ
@MyDaddysgirl44 The packs are around .50 I think. They contain the 4 enzymes needed to break down paper, proteins, starches and fat. RidX only lists Amylase and Cellulase on their site for ingredients. I imagine they have something similar to do the jobs of the other 2 but I'm not 100% sure. You would definitely get more for your money I imagine and I would think that it would be just as safe and effective to use.
@CopingWithTheTimes As a life long septic tank pooper I would save my money on them little enzyme packets and just get some packets of dry yeast. Does the same thing and might be alott cheaper. Just thinkin out load here.
@germanprepper It definitely would and it would probably work just as well. I'm not 100% on that as I know it takes at least 3 different enzymes to break it down properly. The packets contain Amylase (Breaks down starch and carbs), Cellulase (paper), Lipase (Fats) and Protease (proteins). RidX only lists Amylase and Cellulase and some other "blends" of enzymes but not Protease and Liphase (important enzymes) individually. I know those are necessary but I don't know if those are in RidX
@CopingWithTheTimes The reason for the water is to help keep it in a liquid solution and that way the enzimes can do their job. Otherwise there is no reason to use the enzimes. But a little sand in there helps too.
Keep #1 and #2 seperate, the chemical reaction makes the "real" bad smell. Put some dirt in the bottom of bucket, drop #2 in, cover with layer of dirt, repeat. will not give off a foul odor this way. When full, dump outside > 300' from water supply (well).
@boilingfrog61 Thats a good plan bud. Just be careful rain water runoff from where you dump it doesn't run off and get to an area where children or animals etc might be and that it cant runoff toward your water supply. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@88MetalMania Good question. You don't need to use any chemicals, but some lime and ash will help speed up the process of breaking it down. Also, you want to dig the hole at least 12-18". You don't want it mixing with rain water and rising to the top with the next rainfall.
@Ziva4Freedom No, but I ordered 16 lbs worth of items in that order and the shipping was only $6 so their shipping is very reasonable. Thanks for taking a look.
what about buying a box of ridex?

I'm digging my own well. I'm not waiting till the water get's shut off. Put a gallon of water in the bottom of that bucket before use.
mobiltec 2 months ago
@mobiltec Definitely get yourself a well going if its possible. Also, I'd suggest some sand, sawdust or dirt rather than water in the bucket.

That's my plan anyway.
