@MrBig, You're right, but looking at the s**t they're calling hip-hop nowadays, what can you really expect? All we can do is keep s**t like this alive and pray for the resurrection...
Great song, fun video. Back when videos were still creative. I liked the big money braggin MC's of the day too, but it was cool to hear Jeru do something that would really make you think.
IF JERU WOULD HAVE THOUGHT IN THE 90s ..... HE COULD HAVE BEEN IN A FEW MARTIAL ARTS MOVIES w/ say ........ Jackie Chan ???? ..... IMAGINE - JERU & JACKIE KICKIN ASS !!! ..... ( and Jeru sidekick there too .... )
@kareemabdullah - On a metaphorical level, he's playing with the idea that he's doing battle with the ignorance and the folly of today's society - a kind of down to earth super-hero. Then, he's also an mc who doesn't take himself, or his art, too seriously (though he's deathly earnest). And, look at him, he's having fun! It's refreshing even this late in the game.
There's another version of this video where during the fight scene, he does a back breaker on the guy. I have no idea why it was taken out. It wasn't anything major but I guess MTv was starting to become kid friendly at this time.
Brilliant video recorded before the transfer of sovereignty over Hong Kong fro the UK to the People's Republic Of China July 1st 1997. Jeru's director made impressive use of the city's busy backdrop combined with legendary Kung Fu action to create a masterpiece. Rza's Tragedy video was shot around the same time but didn't at all portray the vibe of Hong Kong the way Jeru's did. Jeru not a classic hiphop artist?
Old school...new school...Don't base that shit on the date when an MC was born...Base it on the words that they spit...Jeru is old school, showin all those wanna be's that try to flow what rap and hip-hop are all about...
Recently Jeru confirmed he will drop a new album in 2011 with production from 90's legends JuJu, Pete Rock, Large Professor & old time collaborator (their problems since reconciled) DJ Premier
I have the weirdest feeling that legitamite hip hop's gonna be reborn in the next decade or so. The past decade's been a little weak. I like Kanye and Lupe & all...and Jay Z is great too, but nothing can touch vintage hip hop or underground/alternative rap.
This song is dedicated to real heads all around the world. All around the world! From the US to Poland to South Africa, people who love Hip Hop are disgusted at the current level of mainstream MC's. They are stupid mother Fuckers! Jeru is a real MC, and most people don't understand that. These days HipHop is just a big business. Jeru would never sell his soul for money. Instead of buying weapons, feed the hungry people you greedy fuckers.
i mean hip hop was wacker in 2000 than it was in 1996, and 1996 it was wacker than in 1992. same for 88. if u just ignore the commercial fucks like Diddy that started in 96/97, then hip hop was still dope but maybe just not as dope as in 92. for example, 1996 brought us jay-z (an uncocky jigga) althought hov is good and bad in certain ways reasonable doubt was still dope
Right before this video was a video advertising Mormonism that made me feel misanthropic. Good thing Jeru brought me back to loving humanity though =)
Funny how positive the underlying messages of this song are; Jeru's complaining about the very things that the anti-hip-hop crowd loves to rave about: drug traffic, objectification of women, and corporate greed in the music industry.
@oldfilikin Bcuz rap now a days is whack and all about swaggin and wearing ice cream shirts, but trust me in a couple years or a whole 10 years rap games goin change and i promise u dat.
this is great. i used to listen to this with my man chris when we were traversing the east coast, going in and out of the city underneath the hobo bridge, standing underneath streetlights, smoking cigs and taking you no. I don't want to hear anyone else talking about how nowadays music sucks, i know it suckss, but its because of the industry, its corrupted. fuck them, and also the hell with it fuck these impostor artists too!
