Nice review. I've been wanting to check out the DONNER CUT for a while 'cause I've herad almost completely positive feedback on it.
Though to be fair on the Batman series, I (personally) think that BATMAN FOREVER was as good as BATMAN RETURNS, and is to often rolled toegether with BATMAN & ROBIN (which the studio ruined). The only director's films that feel the same were Nolan's, the two Burton films and two Schummacher films are drastically different from each other.
You know, there's almost a weird connection between the Batman and Superman movie franchises. I mean When Richard Donner and Tim Burton did the first two films of their series, both franchises were quite successful. But when Richard Lester and Joel Schumacher camped up the last few movies, the series plummeted. But then when Chris Nolan did BB and TDK, Batman bounced right back. So with Chris' brother now directing Superman, hopefully Superman can get back on track as well. You never know ;)
you can tell that there were some errors because of the scene where Lois finds out who Clark is. If I told my friends Lois shoots him they wouldn't believe me, also there was some continuity errors e.g superman's/zod's/Lois's voice change and they also use some footage of the audition for clark kent but i did like how they explained more like how zod was freed
I love Superman II the only thing I have a problem with is the ending which is the same as the first but if Richard Donner would of stayed he would of made a better ending so I can't blame him for using the same ending as the first
They only used the same ending as Superman I because it was originally planned for II. Due to filming costs and tight schedules though, they decided to use the most climactic ending they had (turning the world around) for the first since they weren't sure if there would even be a second. Who knows what ending they would've though f if Donner had come back to finish II.
My biggest problem with the Lester cut is the non-kryptonian powers he gives the kandorians and the powers in the FOS; ridiculous. Donner really respects the mythos.
Basically every word spoken in this review is spot on. The Donnor cut is much darker and continues the previous Superman movie storyline, even the unfinished rehearsal scenes with Lois & Clark are a gem to watch. The film really shines above the Lester version.
I just finished watching it and I loved it! The film was fucking awesome! The restored Jor-El scenes were great as Marlon Brando is a fantastic actor. Christopher Reeve was a spectacular actor as always. As well, Margot Kidder was very convincing as Lois Lane. Makes you think how awesome the further sequels would've been with Richard Donnor.
I really like both versions of Superman II, but the Donnor cut s is much edgier and darker, plus Marlon Brando is one of the best aspects of the 1st couple of movies.
I haven't watched the movie yet, but I just bought it not too long ago. I was interested in buying it in 2006, but never got around to it. I found my interest in it to be the same as my interest towards what Tim Burton had in mind for Batman III, which I know didn't get filmed at all but I am interested into at least reading the script.
And, I couldn't have agreed with you more. I was wondering if you owned the Superman: The Ultimate Collection DVD set. If not, pick it up! Very affordable if you purchase at Amazon. It has every Superman film (including the Donner Cut - which is the ONLY version I can watch now). There are also a few great documentaries on there also which is headed by the awesome film "Look Up In The Sky! The Amazing Story Of Superman". One of the best docs I have ever seen.
The restored Jor-el scenes are great and the new take on Lois Lane suspecting Kent/Superman is much better. However, I missed the Mount Rushmore scene and the bit where Lois fires the blank to "unmask" Kent as Superman is fuckin lame. Surely Superman would know he wasn't struck by a bullet!
Dude! Please tell me where to getit, I want to see Donner's cut which would have made a better series and who knows, maybe it would have affected superman returns. Just like batman, the series needs to be rebooted as you said in early vids.Something tells me if Donner had more control the outcome of the series would have been better and no need for a reboot.
The Donner Cut is a much superior film than Lester's. The scene with Reeve and Brando is powerful and very well-acted. When I watch Lester's movie now after watching Donner's, it's not the same and it's obvious that Lester was going for a comedic approach as we can tell with Supes III. There's no doubt that if Donner would never have been fired, the franchise wouldn't have went downhill as it did with III and the uber-awful IV.
Im surprised you haven't seen that yet... I salivating at the mouth in the weeks leading up to the DVD release. I much prefer it to the original II, it has a darker, more epic feel to it.
Hey, Silverlightsaber. Rock on brotha! I have the Richard Donner Cut and know all the history. I've seen Donner's Cut about a million times and a half. It just gets better and better. Preach on and Screw the damn Salkinds!

What do you mean Tim Burton's Batman III??? I swear some people shouldn't even be permitted to comment on YouTube. "Just like Tim Burton's Batman III". Please.......
Because Burton had a Script for part 3 but WB said that was to Dark for Kids so they Scraped it and went with the Schumacher Garbage so Please..... Read Up on it Before you start talking shit to try and make your self feel good
I recommend you read Tom Mankiewicz"s shooting script for Superman II! It is epic and grand!

If Donner were to direct all four films, we'd be living in a perfect world...it would have been an epic quadrilogy.
