  • Rep[y to guitarchick2-Somewhere in the archives, there is a footnote of Felix B. Mendelssohn's opinion of his own work. He is said to have been " disgusted " with his Reformation Symphony. I am only presenting my understanding of the situation. The quotation can be either verified or proved to be false. I happen to agree with Mendelssohn that his Symphony No.. 5 has the sound [A minor] of clinical depression. Contrast this with his Italian Symphony.

  • wat a terrible cutoff. but wonderfully played!

  • Mendelssohn usually composed very bright music, such as his Italian symphony, inspiring happiness. He also composed a more serious small scale work,an Octet, if I remember, The Fifth Symphony, and I don't know that you would agree, conveys an air of unredeemable sadness. He received a commission to write a symphony to commemorate the Reformation. It is recorded somewhere that he detested this particular work.. You could perhaps hear Pergolesi's Stabat Mater in F minor by way of contrast..

  • Music that is somewhat uncharacteristic of Mendelsohn.

  • @WPGS25041941 it was one of his very early compositions, he hadn't really developed a stlye yet. i still think it's a great piece.

  • You guys sound so great! Congratulations!!!
