I last saw Chester Thompson, the keyboard/organist in San Jose on August 12, 2010. I met him through a mutual friend of ours who produced a Hammond organ tribute in which I participated. This mutual friend would have told me if Chester had died considering the kind of friendship they have. The individual who preferred to him as dead on this site may want to do more homework.
KB is Chester Thompson (T o P, Santana), I think drummer is Leon "Ndugu" Chancler. Chepito Alias, Armando Perazza, Bass- Alphonso Johnson. & Who is other KB? Patrice Rushen?
Valdostaguru; please listen to the drums here. No, this is not drummer Chester, and, with respect, thank God. Because as great as Chester was when playing with WR, Zappa etc, he definately lost it when joining Genesis. Here you have Ndugu and his drumming is of the highest class, just as when he played with Weather Report on Tale Spinnin' - the record that came out before Black Market. Ndugu is faboulus and in many aspects even better than Chester. He's a master and his musicality superb.
It says Patrice Rushen on keyboards and she is on one of the keyboards but there are other keyboard players as well. Chester Thompson was a keyboard player so something is wrong with your personel.
Wayne Shorter, Carlos Santana, Chester Thompson, Leon "Ndug" Chancler, Armando Peraza,José Chepito Areas,... quelle equipe! Ca sent l'hommage à Wheter Report dans cette superbe prestation à Montreux 88, magnifique, splendide!
This era of jazz has a bad name due to some lesser-talented treacle-merchants... a very bad name indeed... so I'm not going to buy the T-shirt just yet but I will admit that THIS is something else!
This is a super band w Armando Peraza and Chepito Areas along w Alphonso, Ndugu, Patrice n Carlos! Wayne quotes 'Softly As In A Morning Sunrise' as his starting motif on his killing solo. This is ridiculous stuff. Well, what can you expect from Wayne?
@valdostaguru This Chester Thompson is from Tower of Power and Santana's Band, the best Hammond B-3 player on the planet. His solos on the bass pedals are epic.
Jaco was stupidly beaten to death by an asshole bouncer the same night he was kicked off the stage at a Santana concert. It is out of respect and great remorse that they perform this classic in Jaco's honor.
Actually, Jaco was beaten the night of september 11th, 1987. He died in hospital 10 days later.
earlier that night, he tried to jump onstage at a Santana concert in Florida but he never made it - the bouncers (not the same as the bouncer who fatally beat him hours later) wouldn't let him get onstage.
worthless thats what you got to say about alphonso johnson who played the song on black market first and his version is the best one dont get me wrong jaco was great but he was not a god alphonso and micheal henderson was two of the first put a groove to eletric jazz but no one wants to give them credit for that .jaco played lead bass with weater report it was all about him.but al johnson and victor baily the bottom the played their part and thats real bass playing dumm ass
Man what a nice concert. I have tears in my eyes because I belong to that generation of people who won´t have the opportunity to see something like this.
Wayne is on fire!!! Man, I would be too if I was playing with that mighty rhythm section. Armando still in his prime, layin' it down. Yeah that's what I'm talking about!!
Wayne's always so nervous live! Or at least, fussy. You don't hear it in his playing (which sounds so relaxed); but he's always fidgeting. Hasn't gotten any more comfortable either as far as I can tell.
I would mess on myself if I had that band behind me

I think Ndugu and Patrice went to the same high school. Locke, LACSD. Ossie Smith also went to Locke around the same time.

Only a year after Jaco's death!! WHY ... Why did Jaco have to be taken from us?? He could have been up on that stage, not that worthless Alphonso!!!
Okay i shouldn't say worthless, Alphonso did keep the beat real, but Jaco funked up the game AND kept it groovin! Maaannnn..... RIP Jaco Pastorius
