Ran out of space!- The difference between the Gresley A1 and A3 were modifications to the valve gear to allow better running and improvements to the boiler -including higher pressure. The Peppercorn A1 is (visually) a very different beastie -although it can be argued that the boiler, cylinders etc are just natural developments of the Gresley "school". The LNER "Pacific" (4-6-2) classes were all identified by the class prefix "A" .Indeed the very first were Gresley's A1 of 1923, subsequently modified and re branded "A3" (A2 at the time being taken by early NER locomotives). "A1" became available after all Gresley A1s had been converted to A3s and therefore used for the late '40's Peppercorn design -of which Tornado is a slightly (construction) modernised version. "A2"(and sub classes A2/2 etc) was also re-used . Scotsman's BR No was 60103
so this is an A1 and i believe the flying scotsman was, but then got upgraded to the A3, however i am unclear on the difference, can anyone please tell me?
and i also believe that this engine was in the first episode of the 13th series of top gear, take a look.

Flying Scotsman was a GRESLEY A1, not a PEPPERCORN A1. LNER had 2 versions of the A1, 1 made by Gresley and the other by Peppercorn. I think Flying Scotsman had a rebuild somewhere in its life, upgrading it to a Gresley A3. It is currently being rebuilt at the National Railway Museum, in York.
Flying Scotsman was a Gresley A1, designed for the Great Northern Railway and was originally numbered 1472. 1470 and 1471 before it were also both A1s, same as Scotsman but were prototypes of Gresleys A3, Scotsman being the final version. When upfraded she was renumbered 4472. Tornado is a Peppercorn A1, a totally different type to what Scotsman was.
@benjokazooie I think the A1 class scotsman before the A3 upgrade was different to the A1 tornado as the scotsman was gesigned by Nigel Gresley, the A1s such as tornado were designed by someone called Pepercorn, hence the Pepercorn A1s. If this is incorect then please correct me, and any crappy spelling.
@JayJJ69 you are correct. the A1 that were still under that designation when the pepercorns were being built got redesignated to A10.before many, if not all of them, were upgraded to A3.

@scribblernick red up on it a bit. apparently they wanted flying scotsman but due to a lengthy overhaul it was un available. shame really.
