  • Could part of your step mom's problem be that there are memories "attached" to the things she keeps and she thinks that by throwing them away, she's getting rid of the memories? Sorry, just the psychology student coming out in me lol.

  • Just to add onto my comment, I was reading what Nalora wrote. When people keep things for the "memories" they remind them of they don't notice a lot of the times that something is missing, because they only associate the memory with the object when they actually see it. So if it's not there for them to see, they don't think about the object. I hope that makes sense.

  • How about making a photo album with pictures of the things you think are most important to your step mom and then by having photos of the objects it might get a little easier for her to let some things go because she will still have the "memories" from seeing the objects that remind her of them. Sorry YouTube wouldn't let me type everything in one comment!

  • Interesting ideas. First. My step-mom in the past had a knack for noticing when things were gone. More about seeing the stacks shift slightly. I like the photo idea. Perhaps when she sees things photographed, it will put them in perspective.

  • It is unfortunate, but we had to have a private trash company come out every day to take out the stuff from my Husband's grandmother. She was in the hospital at the time and then never returned to her home so she never really knew what was gone. It was interesting to us when we set her up in the new home that everything truly was "out of sight, out of mind" with her.

  • Strange! I have noticed that my step-mom raises hell when you talk about tossing stuff, but when Dad moved the table there wasn't much said about it. It's almost as if she knows it should be done but couldn't do it herself.

  • That is exactly it. You know the book you point out as being rather ironically humerous? The organize yourself book on top of the piles? Truly they did, at one time KNOW it was getting out of hand, but then it did, and then I truly think from dealing with it myself, that a defence mechanism kicked in, and they DON'T see it!!

  • (So the "gotta watch" tells me they don't know you're filming this?)

I can only imagine how frustrating that bag thing was for you...

  • Some people in the family know that I'm filming, but no one in the house . . . yet. Yikes!

I've noticed my other youtube site (just things in my life) puts one of these messofthehouse videos on "related videos" I don't have any idea why. Any thoughts?
