after watching the video of his '96 crash, i wouldve thought the '96 crash was the more violent crash. i remember watching this race and seeing him crash (he was and still is my favorite driver) and thinking oh he'll be okay, that wasnt that bad. Turns out the angle of that crash and no HANS device just were crazy enough to cause the injuries he sustained. Sad day for the sports world that was.
@KironStrife Indeed, I cannot imagine what it was like for Michael Waltrip who was a team mate. For those of you who never watched the race (I watched live) it was even more dramatic with announcer commentary and lack of knowledge. Dale and jr were running block for Waltrip to get his first 500 win. And alot more to the story, recommend wiki Waltrip's 500 win. Was first race with team, got on front start, etc. But to your comment, not only died doing what loved, but much more.
Earnhardt was always a dirty racer. He put Allison in the wall on the last lap of a Bristol night race, and caused plenty of other wrecks in an attempt to win by other means than driving talent. His death caused by a crash brought on by Marlin nudging him is unfortunate, but poetically ironic..
@WurstbrotElite It's physics. The fact that the car, and therefore his body came to an immediate halt was intense. All of his forward momentum was transferred to the wall and the wall shot back with equal force. Killing him instantly.
@tjthomas9797 first of all it was no little impact, the cars werent as safe as they are today, take one thing into mind, he was going 150-180 when he crashed into the safety barrier, of course it was a big impact, and of course that crash taking his life,
@Waggie97 I don't see how the component of the #3 car's velocity perpendicular to the wall would be 150+ mph considering that the car appears to still have a considerable amount of translational velocity parallel to the wall. As the component perpendicular contributes to the impact velocity, I wouldn't think that the total velocity of the car is relevant. There is barely any damage to his car - this is what a crash at only 100mph looks like: /watch?v=XFkn37BDvTw
It does suck i admit it but as long as we have the KING (richard petty) NASCAR will be okay for now, i will lose hope that the last guy we want to lose good thing he retired with the most awesome wins ever.
Earnhardt was vehemently against himself using the HANS device, claiming it was more of an inconvenience to his driving. But, this is THE crash that set off the safety revolution in the sport. So, I can see a positive to this incident.
He died because his seatbelt broke, sending his chin into the steering wheel. His chin bone was pushed into the upper part of his skull, killing him instantly . (let's just say I know this as fact!)
@bryonlape Exactly What I've Been Thinking But Back Then They Didnt Have Stuff That Kept Your Head From Shaking Side To Side And Back And Forth Most Likely His Neck Snapped On Impact
@oHorrifyinq Actually, the Hans device was invented in the 80's and the Hutchens device was available between 2001 and 2005, so they had 'stuff that kept your head from shaking side to side and back and forth.'
But safety plays into as well. I've heard his seat belts weren't strapped correctly or weren't at all. Also the type of helmet he was using. You also have to remember they were almost going 200 MPH..
@bryonlape It's odd, but at the speed he was going, it was possible. His head/neck went forward after contact with the wall, and also took a side impact from the car that hit him on the side. Sometimes that's all it takes to end a life.
@bryonlape I totally agree, the impact seems rather light. He hit the wall at such a shallow angle and only lost a bit of speed as a result. I'm sure we have all seen much worse. A terrible stroke of bad luck, much like like Ayrton Senna's crash. A huge tragedy in both cases.
@bryonlape I know right? people have survived crashes so hard, that it left the car an unrecognizable heap of twisted metal, but he lightly hits the wall and it's game over? that doesn't make sense.
@bryonlape Basal skull fracture, essentially the safety harness restrains the body, but at the time they didn't use the hans (head and neck safety) harness. Going fast, forward motion rapidly stops, base of skull separates from spine. In fact, it is exactly what hanging execution is and why there is the long drop on the rizen platform. Instant death.
The irony is Earnhardt was one of the leading people against the device saying in an accident they would be strangled like a hanging
NASCAR went to crap after this. I doubt he would have wanted the sport to go the way it did just because of a death. Deaths are a part of it, you can't drive 200mph and not expect it. I miss the old school racing where they proved they were real men
@MissEgasMoniz You can never predict what will happen when you're driving that fast, whether you have safety equipment or not. Maybe Dale would've survived, but things happen for a reason. He was an old-fashioned guy. He liked the open-face helmet, no head restraint, loose seat belt, and all that. If Dale never died though, someone else would've later on, 'cause Dale's death added so much safety stuff into NASCAR; the safer barriers, the COT, all of that reflects Dale's death.
yeah he died from a skull fracture due to a seatbelt issue, major specualtion was caused as to whether it was a fault or he wasn't wearing it properly.
it doesnt look bad no, but he was not wearing the collar that keeps your head from snapping forward. this crash is why it is now mandatory for drivers to have them
I'm sorry but every time I watch this video I don't see how this crash killed him. The physics just aren't there. Even if he wasn't wearing a seat belt the force was not sufficient to cause death. I bet he's hangin' out with Michael Jackson right now!
what's the song name?

A discrete-looking crash like this has many internal damage to the car, which then became fatal for Mr. Earnhardt Sr.

@WurstbrotElite Pretty sure it was internal, the damage was within the car, surrounding Mr Earnhardt Sr.
