excellent line! - "he's always without his humour"
"she'll be wet through when she returns..."
"thank you for pointing that out, dear"
I know this video is about Hugh Laurie but you should have just slipped in the clip of the lady his character is married to when she hears them talking about going to London and she runs over all bouncy and gasping and smiling. It's THE FUNNIEST bit in the whole film!
Man, me and a friend of mine used to LOVE this film when we were kids and Mr Palmer always made us laugh so much. To me he'll always be Mr Palmer, no matter how faqmous he becomes because of House.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE MR. PALMER!!! hE'S SO DRY!! bRILLIANT PERFORMANCE BY HUGH!! i JUST THE JUXTAPOSITION BETWEEN THE BUBBLY, GIGGLY, SLIGHTLY ANNOYING AND FRIVOLOUS MRS PALMER AND THE DRY, SERIOUS, YET KIND MR. PALMER!! tHEY MAKE THE PEFECT COUPLE!
Thanks so much for this!!! I thought I was the only one who always looked forward Mr. Palmer's sarcastic sense of humor among all the S&S romance and drama and all that silliness from the Jennings.
@ZeroTolerance4BS I'm just getting into the show "House" and am always amazed by Laurie's accent. Such a good actor, and hilarious in Sense and Sensibility as Mr. Palmer.
"And his papa has such a way with him!" Haha! This movie was my first exposure to Laurie, and I've loved him as Bertie Wooster, various idiotic Georges (in Blackadder) and House ever since!
Ah, Hugh. You know, its only recently enough i discovered Hugh Laurie, but I've known this film for years now and Mr Palmer has always given me huge laughs when watching. Its even nicer now that I love both character and actor! Is there anything Hugh Laurie cannot do???
If Hugh Laurie wasn't in USA due to House, I'm sure he would've starred in one of the Harry Potter movies. I think he can only do movies that are filmed in USA...
Yes, yes you can say it's House all you like. But really, it's actually the actor playing the role of House. Hugh Laurie is a VERY VERY talented man and it is wrong for you to just connect him with House, although he plays the role spectacularly well, he also does a lot of other things, spectacularly well. So no it is not house. it is HUGH LAURIE. It's wrong for you to assume otherwise :) Go Hugh!
ya know...mr. palmer is great and hl portrays him so well...but imelda staunton does brilliantly also. i love how she keeps her annoying humor no matter how mean he is to her. why is he so mean to her btw?
@shows82......... Mr P is so mean to her because ..'' through some unaccountable bias in favour of beauty, he was the husband of a very silly woman...'' - '' a wish for distinction ( from her )...produced his contemptuous treatment..''
I wouldn't say so, unless you think Frederick Little was a bastard :-) He used to get typecast as an upper class twit, so it's probably a nice change for him anyway.
Personally it's my Hugh Laurie's favorite character, I dare to say more than House, 'cause it fits him so well! Sophisticated, proud and a bit arrogant. He does the haughty demeanor so particularly well that it sticks in one's mind for a long time, like it did with this movie. Thanks for sharing it! 5 stars for you.
Hahahaha! I used to watch this movie all the time when I was younger. I always loved Mr. Palmer. I remember when house first came out, I was like "OH MY GOD IT'S MODERN DAY MR. PALMER!" They have a very similar demeanor, I love it.
P.S. Hugh Laurie and Alan Rickman in the same shot is the best thing ever.
xDDDDDDD It happened exactly the same to me. Me and a friend always laughed remembering Mr Palmer and then House began and I was OH MY GODDDD MR PALMER RIGHT THERE!XDDDDDD
I always felt sorry for mr palmer having to put up with her, I thought he had such a kind heart. my fave character, especially being played by laurie.
@LadyViolet7 Are you joking? they're the best couple in that book. The author must take the responsibility of many of my bright joy momments;DDDD . I would like to create fanfic "how on the earth did this marriage came about", like you've said. Too bad J .Austen is allready dead we will never know the true T.T
@LadyViolet7.. Mr P married her ''... through some unaccountable bias in favour of beauty...''. S&S ch20. Perhaps if there had been a really beautiful actress playing Mrs Palmer, when watching this movie, we wouldn't have found the marriagesuch a mystery . '' ...this kind of blunder was too common..''' ( also ch 20 )
heh, this is basically my parents' marriage. just this morning, my father was talking happily about a mango tree at his parents' house and asked my mother if it was there when they got married. she answered (sarcastically) that it was. she then mentioned another mango tree on the same land. my father said enthusiastically that he was the one who planted it.
... she promptly told him that she had two men cut it down for the road. and then went onto offensive nonsense. and, like mrs palmer, she has no real idea of how this nonsense is felt. it's hard to watch marriages like that, but the Mr Palmers of the world are just too nice.
