When I first watched this film the ending effected me so much I had to hide the DVD

so that I would not be continually reminded of it. Beautifully photographed and utterly tragic. I love the fact that there is little compromise in Chinese films - no perfect happy ending. Of course, I am also totally in love with Gong Li (ha ha ha), .

The song is "The Pretender" that was sung by Bai Kwong. It can be found on one of the "Shanghai Lounge Diva" albums. The old Bai Kwong version is slower and sort of sad. This version sung by Gong Li is more upbeat. Her voice is excellent!

This is one of the first films I showed as a projectionist. I think that the audio and picture were completely remastered for the American release.

Interesting - I also was a new projectonist when this film came. I used to go to theatre and watch this scene. The music ecoed over the whole cinema. That was one of the last remaining single screen cinemas in Stockholm.

@ituile "Was" one of the last remaining? I hope they're not all gone now. A great city like Stockholm without any old movie theaters?! That's terrible! I thought Europeans had more sense than us Americans about destroying historic buildings. I work in a historic theater now. Most of them in the US are gone. It's just wrong.

I hope Shanghai still has some old movie theaters. I'm going there someday. Shanghai in the 1920s and '30s was amazing!
