lol you've definitely played this before. You can tell because once you pick up the shovel you are absolutely surprised and say, "Oh! It's penumbra style" as though you didn't know you could do that in every half life game. Then later once you fall under the stairs out of nowhere you say, "Oh well it's half life style, right?" Then proceed to solve the puzzle perfectly on your first try. How could you be surprised that the engine lets you pick things up, then know exactly how it works later?

Like you said, he was surprised at first, then wasn't later, because the initial surprise REMINDED HIM that it was half-life style, so that later in the game he remembers, "Oh yeah, it's half-life style" and thus solves the puzzle.

Literally 5 seconds of thinking could've answered your question.
