Yeah thanks for loading this!. I have been looking for this song since it aired on TV in the late 80's. I agree with Timothysaarinen, best version ever.
Hey! I remember this band. I love this album. Bought it in 1986 and played the grooves off it. I cannot find it on CD or another vinyl copy. Could never find anything else by them. Was thrilled to find them on Youtube, especially this song. The best version of " Solitary Man " i've ever heard. Sorry Neil.
I saw them play at Monash Uni, circa 84. Bought the Sleeplesss EP? have to check. This is the standout song. Other material good but eventually got a bit tiring and thin / formulaic for me. But really strong live band.
Another great cover of the time is Straightjacket Fits doing So Long Marianne.
Thanks though for putting this up on Utube. Great stuff.
A really great cover of one of the best singles of any time. Probably this is the best version of "Solitary Man" ever played. Ups and Downs? In spite of this superb beginning, they remained a promise in rock universe. A little shadowing light that never became a star. Why?
One of their first singles (I think) might have been called
'Real World' or something like that, not sure if they released it before 'In the Shadows' if anyone has a version of it, would love to get a copy.
I used to play in another band at the time and we used to play with them a lot at places like the New Exchange, Hacienda (upstairs), Caxton St Hall and triple z gigs.
Another great band though not in the same ilk were
Right You are! I've been waiting for the Ups to make their debut in this fora for a while...I've been their fan since, hmm, 1987...but living here up in the North its not that easy to keep up with whats going on in Down Under...
I have this LP on vinyl and it still sounds fantastic.

I am a big Diamond fan, but I think this version is by far the greatest. It really captures the feeling of the song.

Thankyou so much. I can still hear the scratches from my stylus... one of my favourite albums of the '80s.

I'm very excited to see your Ups and Downs clips. They were such a great band. Up there with The Church and The Triffids.
Thanks.
