i think wilt would've been an all star and a franchise player for sure. BUT NO WAY IN HELL WOULD he EVERRR average those kinds of numbers in today's NBA. the NBA is filled with athletes and where teams actually scout players based on their ability to play defense as well as offense. Give an nba player an uncontested shot right under the rim with a midget guarding you and im sure they will average 50ppg.
@Charlie100 We could make an easy argument that the centers of Wilt's era were superior basketball players(Bill Russell, Nate Thurmond, Willis Reed, Kareem Abdul Jabbar) all of them are in the Hall of Fame. I think if Wilt played now he would score more than 50 points per game. Wilt competed in the high jump in college, benched over 400 pounds and set all those records in CHUCKS. Manute Bol 7'7 an easy 5 inches taller than any other center in the league, sucked. Height is not everything charlie.
@TheQuiggz i never said height was everything. but im just saying the way people would not know back in those days how to defend Wilt. Only Bill Russell was able to do it hence why he won so many duels against him.
Come on now...if Shaq or dwight howard was defending wilt he would not score more than 25 to 30. No way he would avg 50ppg during the entire season.
Players these days are much stronger and agile that they wont allow him to get easy and deep position like he would have.
Wow, ESPN needed some major fact-checkers: there's no known film footage of Wilt's 100 point game, there is an audio broadcast though, but it certainly wasn't a dunk that got him those last two points, it was a jumper I believe
@Funpants94 Imagine Allen Iverson or Vince Carter playing in 1965, the way they fall over and cry whenever someone comes near them they'd have spent entire games on the ground back then.
GOOGLE JABBAR OPEN LETTER TO PIPPEN FROM EARLIER THIS WEEK....
KAREEM WHO HATED WILT CALLS CHAMBERLAIN THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME!!
Quote: "You obviously never saw Wilt Chamberlain play who undoubtedly was the greatest scorer this game has ever known. When did MJ ever average 50.4 points per game plus 25.7 rebounds? "
"...Simply put the number of players that could have stopped Wilt Chamberlain in his prime has not increased."
@MrIndustrialWater Russell's teams won way way more games than Chamberlain's, and Russell enacted a greater positive influence on his teammates than Chamberlain (as in: he made them better)
@moviehypno23 Not completely, John Havlicek would've still been the same great John Havlicek, Bob Cousy would've still been the same great pure point guard Bob Cousy.
@moviehypno23 Actually it's not LOL I've done my calcs and I think a little over 1 women a day every day since he was 18 then he very well coulda hit the 20K mark LOL
@icluch206 You count 2 rings as many? While Russel has 11 and MJ has 10. Led the league in assists as a center, for one reason: He was obsessed with stats! When assists were incoperated he wanted to be the best with them too.
@icluch206 Wilt isn't in my top 5. Huge ball hog incredibly athletic but never made his team better. Always looked for ways to make himself better. His peers felt Russell was clearly better. Jerry West did! The 100 points per game shows his unwillingness to give the ball up to his teammates. It was also a different era then. What would he be averaging. All things to put into perspective. My Top Ten: 1. Jordan 2. Russell 3. Kareem 4. Magic 5. Bird 6. Wilt 7. Duncan 8. West 9. Kobe 10. Hakeem
@njnets2000 Wilt averaged 50.4 points per game, and 25.7 rebounds per game during the 61-62 season. Why not give him the ball if hes gonna score half the teams' points and no one could stop him?
@ggoldman43 actually the scoring average around the league then was 120 points per game and his competition was mainly clumsy white guys, plus the only three things wilt cared about were stats, fame, and himself.
He always thought "what is the best situation for me?". While Russell thought "How can I make my team win?".
Had no game in the playoffs, as Russell completely destroyed him. Not only Russell's peers but Wilt's peers. Wilt scored many points and was a physical specimen. However, 11 - 2.
@njnets2000 this isnt about greatest teams, this is about the man himself, and how he completely dominated and revolutionized the center position. Yao Ming is taller than any other Center in the league, but he doesn't dominate the position.
Russell didnt completely destroy him he just took away most of his offense.Speaking of offense Russell had none, while Wilt was a great defender himself. Russell was one dimensional and 99% of the time had a HOF Team
@njnets2000 What about the 15 game turnaround he did for the Warriors his rookie season? What about the fact his teams went to the playoffs every year even tho they sucked? How about the fact that he was on the only team that EVER beat the 60s Celtics?
His peers ON THE CELTICS felt Russell was better. Nobody else did. Used to hear 60s guys on the radio all the time "Wilt can't be stopped." "Nobody ever played like him."
Bill Russell said it "Wilt's playing my style better than I ever did."
@Vstrat0 actually the scoring average around the league then was 120 points per game and his competition was mainly clumsy white guys, plus the only three things wilt cared about were stats, fame, and himself.
He always thought "what is the best situation for me?". While Russell thought "How can I make my team win?".
Had no game in the playoffs, as Russell completely destroyed him. Not only Russell's peers but Wilt's peers. Wilt scored many points and was a physical specimen. However, 11 - 2.
You know how you can tell if someone is ignorant about basketball? When they claim that Wilt was only good because he was tall and everyone one else wasn't. Yeah, that means you, douchebag.
The Big Dipper was the Babe Ruth of basketball. Did things nobody has even approached since. Greatest scorer, greatest rebounder, and most intimidating player in the history of the game. Whoever you pick for second best, they're not even close.
Agreed. He is # 1 on my list. Once I got past the "Jordan is the greatest ever" HYPE, and conducted research and educated myself of players of previous eras, I changed my views.
Did you hear Wilt's response when Seaver asked Wilt about his free throws? Wilt responded, "That's where I made my money"!!! Now you know Facebook289.
Told you Wilt dumped them to keep the other team from dictating the score. If Wilt had been on Boston in the early sixties and Russell on Philly the games would not have even been close. Later with the 76ers, Wilt, Greeer,, Luke Jackson, Cunningham and Wali Jones, Philly showed Boston who was boss by kicking their butt and that is why the 67-68 Sixers are regarded as the best team of all time. Wilt snagged 55 rebounds in one playoff game vs. Russell. Wilt vs. Russell was candy from a baby!
It was the 66-67 team wasn't it? Wilt and that team were outstanding. You could tune into any game 10 minutes in and the score might be Philly 32 opponent 15.This happened all the time!!! By the 3rd quarter they had 30 to 40 point leads. That team clicked! When Wilt had a great mix of players around him he raised his game. Lakers in early 70's same type of team. Nowhere near as good as that Philly team with the players you mentioned
I have stated that Wilt dumped many of his free throws because he had a guy in Vegas who occasionally put in a bet for Wilt (on Wilt's team). Wilt made 28 of 32 free throws the night he scored 100 points. How does a 50% career shooter from the line make 87.5% over 32 shots? Listen at the end of this interview what Wilt says when questioned by Seaver about his free throws. Many a true word said in a joke!
Wilt was the most dominating offensive force and intimidating defensive force in history! In his prime he out rebounded the great russell routinely, outscored everybody, blocked more shots in one game than most centers did in a month and never fouled out. He won a ring with Philly and LA. That Philly team I used to listen to as a child. They basically won every game in the first 5 minutes of the game. That is how good they were!
Boston Celtics were a great dynasty No doubt about it . Like Montreal in hockey That Philly team was outstanding They would grab 30 point leads in the second quarter and toy with the opponent.
