Social Security prevents over population and eventually shortages in jobs. No safety net results in the need for 4-5 children per family to eventually support the parents. We would be looking at a baby boom 3 to 4 times that of WW2.

Our GDP in 2007 was $38,600/person and the cost of social services was 0.8% of the GDP. Not much really. Last year the government spent $9 billion for 63 fighter jets. What was the better social value? 63 planes or feeding 1.67 million people?

I got into an argument with my daughters boyfriend his is right leaning. He got onto how welfare uses up so much money in the Canadian system. I decided to check out stats Canada on the issue. The 2007 report showed 1.67 million Canadians (5.1% of the population) receiving social benefit. Of these, 1.22% were children and 1.48% were on disability status. That left 2.40% (<800,000 people) of the population capable of work which isn't that bad. (cont).

Social Security prevents over population and eventually shortages in jobs. No safety net results in the need for 4-5 children per family to eventually support the parents. We would be looking at a baby boom 3 to 4 times that of WW2.

@chaumont20 All democrats are not atheist and not all atheist are democrats, this is so insane a statement I wonder if you are not totally ignorant of political dynamics in the US. The large majority of democrats are Christians so that renders any suggestion so completely insane. As an atheist I can say I am very dissatisfied with the democratic party on religious matters and thus even though I happen to be a progressive I am not a democrat, only vote for them sometimes.

@cablepanos Religion may not be the cause of all irrational thought and I have meet many many atheist who are extremely illogical, irrational and just plain stupid, but even with that I cannot help but think that if we didn't have these religious extremist we would be like France or Sweden. Religion's prime tenet seems to be believe without evidence and to have faith in the ridiculous. You're right is does fit very well with republican values. Sometimes I really hate the republican party.

I'm just saying believing Christianity without evidence and believing Republican ideology without evidence go hand in hand. There is definitely a correlation between Red States and the Bible Belt.

@cablepanos I wasn't suggesting that you thought that way. I was just musing over my own feelings on the matter and then going into the points you bring up. If it seemed that way then I have to blame my lack of skill as a writer and then limited medium in which I have to work. As an atheists and in some ways an antitheis, I am so critical of religion that I find it better if I hedge against the idea that I blame everything on religion.
In summary I 100% concur with your argument.

Rubio's not saying it, but the institutions the he thinks are being crowded out are the churches. That's where you'd have to go if you were poor back in the old days. Churches have lost influence and they want it back.

Republicans and their bible thumping mouth breathing benefactors have a keen interest in empowering the churches again. One way to do that is to force people into them through economic warfare. By destroying all the support systems they have, Americans would have no choice but to go back to the corrupt churches they have been leaving in mass these past few years.
