  • Great video, i think he sounds like the guy off family guy who says "big wup, wana fight about it?"

  • But lo, how easily evil is felled, when the righteous hold the mace!

  • Thanks Elasticsteel, this is the best instruction video i've seen yet in You tube. Thanks again!

  • Thanks for posting these tutorials, as a newcomer to Tae Kwondo, these are extremely usefull.

  • I would practice like this but my balance is nowhere near as good as his :(

  • That is indeed a perfect TKD sidekick! I'm a blackbelt TKD fighter, been doing TKD for 8 years now and my instructor isn't the brightest out there so I had to figure a lot of stuff out myself. In my early days, I always had problems with the side kick going of line. The method that I found doesn't involve a wall, but to keep the heel, the butt and the shoulder on the same line while bringing the leg in and out, pretty much like you explained it.

  • I love your vids.I just like to say my side kick is not like any you just mentioned.I was trained to do it in 1 motion, not to raise knee up high at all.Once the foot lifts from the ground it instantly extends diagonally up while the back leg pivots. Its hard to explain. We were trained to do everything one motion without telegraphing anything.Basically no raising the knee, no stepping with the lead leg when kicking. My TKD wasnt 100% traditional but it was very practical. Great vids keep em coming

  • donde lompuedo conseguir

pero en español de verdad me interesa

  • omg my hip pain in the supporting leg while doing this kick is terrible

please tell me what i should do !!

  • whoever says you cant learn martial arts without someone to train you, how was martial arts first invented? huh

  • just search all over youtube this kind of tutorials and bang you know some martial arts from your home ad without paying anything. but you need to have skills and really pay attension because theres none to correct you. i think when you hear the wind from the speed and you can go back to the fighting

position is where you get it right :D

  • Wow. Great technique!

  • i know it may look easy but it demand stretching and flexibility before doing this kick

  • killer muscle control man, I'm getting a little older and trying to maintain my flexibility... gettin tough man

  • i feel that my side kick is too weak ! I do it that way, i should need more power on the hips ?

  • I've recently become really fascinated with the capability of the legs. This video was awesome; very detailed, even for a complete beginner like myself.

  • What are the martial arts u practice?

  • I have to get your kicking series on DVD soon. The power you generate on your demo reel is flat amazing. You take some of my weaker kicks and just decimate with it. Major props!!

  • I so wanna make fun of his voice but i'm afraid he'll kick my face through the monitor XD

  • @650sFinnest ino right its mad funny haha im like lauhfing like crazy

  • @650sFinnest

    He probably will

  • Great technique

  • Great instructional vid, I used to practice similarly with a rope hung from a wall (gravity keeping it level 90' of course) i strongly recomend if you have the space / equipment: train with a heavy bag behind the vertical rope, when you kick a solid object it's easy to loose balance when your positioned that way; kicking the heavy bag gets your non-kicking leg used to keeping you upright / balanced.

  • what muscles are you using when doing a side kick

  • hi

i enjoy your videos greatly, i get hip joint pain when performing roundkick/roundhouse kicks, i stretch as much as possible 5/6 times a week and have good front kick/crescent kick, even my side kick is improving but i feel like my hip joints wont open out for the round kick at all, after an hour of stretching and performing the movement it gets easier but in classes i cant do them at all as not all the time is spent stretching and kicking.

im 38 but very fit, any ideas? many thanks

  • @lughead01 I have no idea how to help you (got same problem as you), but one advice: do not stretch 5/6 times a week. Rule of thumb is: 1st day stretching, 2nd day resting. So stretch every 2 days, let your muscles rest.

  • When i get into the chamber my torso or pelvis (i dont know what it is) is pulling me back around.

I dont know if this makes sense or not.

  • @TOWinkworthIpswich it might have something to do with my legs are slightly bowed, my shin is facing more inward.

  • Comment removed

  • are there more ways to improve the side kick chamber other than the way shown at the end? i just can't seem to get the left side to be as good as the right side.. :(

  • just what i needed to correct my technique awesome!

  • I'm a kungfu student and i got a problem with my balance especially when im stretching out the leg and when im retracting the leg. how do improve my balance?

  • Hi,

Do you know why do I get sharp pain in my right hip flexor, when I try to kick?

After 10 month I still very stiff, although after stretching I dont have pain in my legs:) But i still very far to hold my legs in the air...

  • I'm a italian man,Luca, i think that ia a simlpy great lesson!

  • Thank..u sir

  • I've been practicing my side kicks. I can't get them very high and I still struggle with correct form. I lift my let and say out loud Chamber, Heel, Chamber while I do my kicks. I'll get better at them the more I do.

  • Great teacher -- VERY technical. Thanks.

  • I have two questions. First. I've studied tang soo do and stopped for many years. I started training myself again. In the streets an attacker would most likely rush you. If they get really close to me and I can't use kicks, What do I do. Do you study Aikido or a Judo for close combat if you can't distance yourself to use your kicks? Second question. Is picking a fight with Chuck Norris really a good idea?

  • @Rastapulse What you do? Punch or use knee or elbow if the distance is this small. Think and adapt. Kicking is not the only option.

  • Thanks

  • Thats whats inherently wrong with your system...no?

Learn balance your time with another art such as WingChun, Southern or Nothern Mantis...that should make you pretty brutal up and close :)

  • with my system? I don't think so. I usually resort to punching and techniques. Kicking only when I have approriate distance for it. Less contact with ground = less balance = less power

  • @Rastapulse Learn to punch quick and heavy and also learn knife-hand thrust for throat and eyes and practice it with footwork like side stepping; also practice biting guavas or silicon to train biting

. you may need it someday when you grapple in the street.

  • Thank you

  • @Rastapulse

That's the "problem" with alot of martial artist, they need the distance or constantly keep away in order to kick.

    Focus on other arts aswell..

As for your question; Knee, elbow or even a headbutt will work if done right.

  • That's a perfect ITF TKD side kick!

I'm drawing a line on the floor and wall at class for the students.

    Subscribed!

  • @Fingyfin

    Glad you found it useful.

  • Just curious, Paul....which particular martial art and style have you trained in?

  • hi elasticsteel im 40 years old is it possible for me to learn to kick higher ? i have been lazy regarding exercise in the last few years. Is it more a mental thing or a combination of phsyical and mental to train my legs ?

  • You can make a video about groin kick , It's good for self defense , and useful :)

  • You don't need my tutorial for that. You can learn that on the street.

  • @Mary230195

    Tried the groin bite?

  • HI.. This is what i was looking for.. Thanks a lot.. :-)

    If u don't mind, i have a ques for u..

I used to Go to GYM 3 years a go & i was Very FIT. But i met with an accident 2 years ago & frm then, i have quit exercising. My body is Bloated,Fat but vry STIFF now!! can i gain my ioriginal shape back? & should i reduce Weight 1st or can i Go with Stretch? Pls Reply!! Thank u again..

  • yourshiva1,

I have no Idea what your situation is.

There is now way I can give you correct advice with the information you provided.

It's best that you look for a PT or a trainer,

who can take your history, test your fitness level and go from there.

  • you should check with your doctor about that

  • @yourshiva1 join karate it get you fit

  • @yourshiva1

The uploader can't help you, but maybe I can. That is if you don't mind. You should go for stretches first. Since you wight is more, you will have lesser problem in finishing your stretch than if you were slimmer. It will hurt at first. Then you'll be used to it. Then, you start doing some kicks. Once you can do them well enough, then you reduce your weight for easier, faster and stronger kicks. But you must do so with an iron will as it will be tough. I have some experience in this

  • Thanks a lot dude. And I love your accent, reminds me of my parents :P.

  • Glad to help.

  • Thank you!!

  • Thank you for your comment.

  • lol you guys know nothing

  • i can only side kick up to hip level =[

  • Look through the channel, you may find some videos helpful.

  • Can you train your leg muscles by kicking in the air or is it best to lifting weights with your legs & THEN stretch...Don't you get kind of stiff if your lifting weights all the time?

I can only lift my leg up to my hip....

Btw how long did it take you to be able to do high kicks & do you have to stretch every single day?

I'm kind of new so sorry if i'm asking lot of questions.

  • It all depends on what you are training for.

Most people can kick high in few months with correct training.

  • I have some tips for you. While your watchng tv, everytime an add comes on do some stretches. Every stretch should be timed 10 seconds long. This method works for me and increased my flexiblity over a few months.

  • Hehe thx!

  • i think 09187050087 means with you feet shoulder wide apart and hands up

  • sir how about if you perform a side kick in fighting position?????

  • What is fighting position?

  • I think he means sparring stance

  • Great video. Is there a specific reason why you say to use a 45 degree chamber as opposed to a completely horizontal one?

  • There are many reasons. Most people can't do a correct horizontal chamber, even if they wanted to, without taking away from the efficiency of the kick.

  • Thanks for the response, and quick too!

So would I be right to say the following?

    1. Horizontal chamber is okay IF it doesn't detract from the rest of the kick.

    2. You suggest the 45 because it's easier to deliver the rest of the kick with proper form.

  • Please excuse my ignorance, although I am a martial artist, can you explain what is a chamber from your perspective?

  • 5 chambers?

  • What do you mean?

  • yhu said something about 5 chambers while yhu were explaining the kick .

  • Yes, the 5 chambers of shaolin. It's the secret of the masters.

Just kidding. I probably said high chamber and you heard 5 chambers.

  • Paul are your videos, such as this one, taken directly from the DVD's you sell, or are these special tutorials you put together for Youtube? Great stuff!

  • Do you mean, if I cut out parts of the DVD's and place them into youtube? No.

  • Yes, that's what I meant. I asked out of curiosity because you must be a very busy man to plan out and produce so many very detailed videos. Thanks for making them available!

  • hi nice flexibility im a lighweight and i have lots of power but not too much flexibility what sort of stretches do you do ie do you have a stretching device or anything? thanks!

  • Take a look at the channel. It's all there.

  • ahhh his kicks look so good because of his flexibility....i want to do the splits to kick higher....

  • Brilliant explanation!

As to the other method you described; the pivot when you kick out wouldn't add any extra power to the kick would it, as the power wouldn't come from the rotation of the hips. Would the reason why some Martial Artists employ that other type of knee lift be to conceal the kick? ie to confuse the target of what kick they were throwing.

  • I rather not compare as to why someone does something and why I do something else. I say this out of respect for other styles. All I do is I show how I perform the technique.

    Thanks for your comment.

  • Yes of course... My dojo teaches it the other way and i respect that, however i was just asking if the pivot actually adds power to the kick biomechnically.

    Thanks

  • what type of training do you do to get that type of static active leg strength

like i mean how do u hold out your leg that high for so long?

  • Martialdave, there are plenty of ideas on my channel, here on youtube. You can also see my Kicking DVD series on ElasticSteel website.

  • You have great technique. Keep it up!

  • Thanks for your comment.

  • there are many other ways to perform a sidekick my friend. it all depends on your school of method. yet, as far as i can see from the two techniques here it looks sharp.

  • Thank you for your comment. You are right, there are many ways to throw a side kick.

  • What kind of sports u training ? taekwondo ?

  • You side kick explanation rocks!

  • Thank you for your comment.

  • The best side kick explanation video.

  • Thank you for your comment.

  • My hip flexors are always sore when I use them if I haven't warmed them up first, is this normal? I think I may have damaged something.

  • If your hip flexors are sore after few kicks, then it could be a problem. If your hip flexors are sore after many kicks it's normal.

  • They are sore from the start... As if I have damaged a tendon or muscle of some sort.

  • You may have chronic injury, musculoskeletal condition, weak hip flexors or incorrect technique.

You have to find a specialist near you who can evaluate that.

  • OK thanks! Sorry what kind of specialist would that be? A physiotherapist or something?

  • Wobbgongman,

    PT, Chiropractor, Orthopedic, Rolfer, Kinesiologist

  • actually I'm doing the first option but I will practice the second option too.

Thanks a lot for all your videos. Its amazing to have as much tips on kicking and stretching on youtube!

  • Thank you for your comments.

  • Great explantion. Do you have anything on the front kick?

  • Sure, take a look at other videos on my ElasticSteel channel.

  • Good kicking advice.

  • Thank you for your comments.

  • Great video! One question though, you mention using the second option where you chamber already at 45 degrees. Wouldn't the first option give you more power because you add the twisting motion to your kick?

  • K933,

Due to my respect for the authenticity of different styles, I rather not make arguments of superiority of one technique over the other. All I can say is that this is how I choose to perform my techniques.

  • Paul, your explanations are always so simple and easy to understand. thank you so much.

  • You got it, thank you for watching.

  • Awsome explanation of the side kick.

  • Thank you for your comment.

  • very cool! :) I have been using the line on the gym floor to keep my heel traveling correctly .. I like the idea of using the wall also.

  • I am glad it's working for you.

  • Great explantion.

  • Thank you for your comment.

  • Wich martial art(s) have you practiced?

  • Many different one's.

  • Another great video from you. Thank you.

  • You got it.

  • Than you for posting. You could have a good podcast if you don't already.

  • Thank you for your comments.

  • i don´t speake english.. only a litle but i understeand.. when i see this video .. my side kick now is much better, very thanks man.

  • I am glad it helped you. Keep training!

  • Another cool explanation from Paul. This will definitely help my side kick.

  • Thank you for the comment.

  • Good tutorial.

  • Thank you for the comment.

  • So many martial arts teachers who don't know anything. You could teach so much.

  • Thank you for your comment.

  • Side kick great video. Thanks.

  • You got it.

  • I like all your videos. This one and the side kick height video are my favorite.

  • Thank you for your comments. You need to master the side kick first, before working on the height of the side kick.

  • If you get a chance please make more videos. Thanks in advance.

  • Thank you for your comments.

  • yes why the chamber s 45 deg. ??

  • Without going too deep into biomechanics...

Assuming your supporting foot is turned out, the pelvis is lifted on the kicking side. To make it a hip flexion with a tilted pelvis the chamber has to be 45 degrees. This is most efficient, utilizing the strongest muscle groups.

    That's the short answer.

  • Paul, do you explain all this in your DVD?

  • In details.

  • why is it 45 degrees ?

  • The chamber of the kick?

  • Good stuff, I just rewatched it tried it and learned more about my side kick.

  • Everyone know the foot has to move straight, but thanks for showing us how to do it.

  • You got it.

  • You got it.

  • Excellent explanation of how to do the side kick correctly.

  • Cool tutorial. Thanks.

  • "People do their side kick as a funny roundhouse" You are absolutely right about that.

  • That was funny.

  • "Side kick as a funny roundhouse" I think we all know what you mean. lol

  • Another goodie. Thanks.

  • Thank you for donating this valuable information to other martial artists.

  • You are very welcome.

  • Thanks.

  • Second that.

  • This helps with power of the kick?

  • Very good points. Thanks for showing.

  • You videos are very good!

  • Thank you for your support.

  • Thanks Paul, another good video.

  • You are very welcome.

  • And here is the other part of the clip. Thank you.

  • You got it.

  • Why did my instructor did not explain the side kick like that. If he did I probably would have had a great side kick.

  • Most instructors don't know much about mechanics of kicking. They just demonstate and you follow.

  • perfect example and tutorial =]

  • Thank you for your support.

  • The was really good - very few of us actually put in the time and effort to truly understand the mechanics of our basic kicks - we just learn it and 'go for it' for decades like that - good job! - you actually put intelligent thought into something that we usually just clobber over the head.

  • Thank you, glad to help.

  • I have a sheet of paper where I write how much kicks i've done. Now, with the dide kick, i'm only at 140 repetitions and the amelioration is awesome!Thank you a lot!

  • Thank you a lot. My sensei told me that this is 1000 CORRECT repetitions to do a really good side kick. Now I can see a perfect one and practice it really correctly like if it was my sesei in front of me!

  • It's important to practice correct technique.

    Enjoy you training!

  • Great vid!

  • Thank you for your support.

  • Post some of your competitions or fights please..
