Anthony Barbaro's story is one you would never expect out of a school shooting. Some of the shooters have been psychopaths- no remorse, no pity, no nothing. Barbaro is still a killer, but there's something else about him.... I found those notes he left very touching.
It ends like it began; in the middle of the night. Someone might think it selfish or cowardly to take one´s own life. Maybe so, but it´s the only free choice I have.
The way I figure, I lose either way.If I´m found not guilty, I won´t survive the pain I´ve caused - my guilt. If I´m convicted, I won´t survive the mental and physical punishment of my life in prison.
Here are some other excerpts from his suicide notes (from St. Petersburg Times):
I regret the foods I´ll never taste, the music I´ll never hear, the sites I´ll never see, the accomplishments I´ll never accomplish. In other words, I regret my life.
"I guess I just wanted to kill the person I hate most -- myself, I just didn't have the courage. I wanted to die, but I couldn't do it, so I had to get someone to do it for me. It didn't work out."
Before he hanged himself, he told his uncle that "the pressure just got the best of me". He was smart, ranked ninth in his senior class of nearly 300 and had won a college scholarshipo a week before the shootings.
Yeah, like how they didn't mention one of the killers actually suffering from a tumor in his brain, pushing down on his 'aggressive zone'. But I guess they're still just saying how they killed people.
yes it's frightening and tragic the number of people who can't get the help they need. Maybe if the stigma of mental illness were removed maybe more people would seek help and not have to feel ashamed. Ironic that in a society where we can send people into space we can't tear down that wall.
He was an honor student, a scholarship winner, a member of the National Honor Society, a lover of reading and worked 20 hours a week as a bus boy at a local restaurant. He had hoped to be a scientist or engineer. Before he hanged himself in his cell, he told his uncle that ''the pressure just got the best of me.'' So, this was a smart kid. In 1974 there probably wasn´t psychiatric help available as much as nowadays and whatever problems he had he was alone with them.
lol :)

There is much depth in his words. It´s sad and tragic that a person like him ended up where he did.

In a note explaining his motives Barbaro wrote:
"I guess I just wanted to kill the person I hate most -- myself, I just didn't have the courage. I wanted to die, but I couldn't do it, so I had to get someone to do it for me. It didn't work out."

but I think that might have been the issue in some way. He was involved in too many things and probably felt the need to excel in everything he did.

His suicide note might give some insight into his mind:
"People aren´t really afraid to die - it´s how they die. I don´t fear death, but rather the pain. But no more"
"Some will always ask, ´Why?´ I don´t know - no one will. What has been, can´t be changed. I´m sorry.
So he couldn´t offer any explanation for what he did.

Am I the only one who realizes how much Barbero kind of looks like Eric Harris?

I ordered this movie about 2 weeks ago (still waiting for it). I can't wait to watch it. It should get here sometime this week or early next week.
I wished there was more about Anthony Barbero. What made him do it? What was his life like??
