  • Dude sounds exactly like Ray Romano. Everybody Loves MAP Sensor Testing.

  • @p0rt0b0y Everyone loves to see richpin do map sensor testing....haha.

  • Thanks for the informative video, make sure the paperclip probe doesn't touch any grounded surface of the engine or chassis when ignition is turned on.

  • thanks for the your video good information on how to check map

  • great video

  • do all vehicles carry a map

  • @hp11208 I believe all vehicles that have a computers have map sensors.

  • @richpin06a No, some EMS (Engine Management Systems) use MAFS (Mass Air Flow Sensor) instead of a MAP

  • @hp11208 NO! there are lots of diffrent ways to measure the air on an engine, just to mention some theres KV (karman vortex) MAF (mass air flow meter) and AFM (air flow meter, not mass).

  • @richpin06a thanks. =D

  • @richpin06a ok now if the map was failing would the engine light show up, or you just have to go by the syntoms described?

  • @omarG19100 There are codes that will set like P0105,P0106,P0107,P0108 and P0109 if the map circuit malfunctions.

  • @richpin06a can cleaning the area on the manifold where that hole is cause a negetive affect on the map sensor?

  • @omarG19100 If the seal on the sensor is in good shape there shouldn't be a problem.

  • Thank you! Very clear and helpful!

  • I have a 01 chry town and country. Its showing code 1297 (too much voltage to map sensor). I changed map, Tps and i'm still getting the same code and running rough. Help

  • @mets24able I would back probe the sensor on the voltage and signal wire to see what is going on.

  • You do not have to take it off the test it do you?, Cant you just use T-pins and a O-scope?

  • @Charlesdylonbrown If you have that equipment yes you can.

  • rich where is a map sensor on a mazda mpv 2000 do u kno

  • @hp11208 You got me on that one

  • verY nice work !Thanks ,? are u in Florida?all soundsin back are like in florida!:-)

  • @sipapito I am in the bay state

  • Screw vacuum pumps. I just stick some tubing on and then suck on it. I test egrs this way also. Suck on the vacuum line for the egr with the engine running and it will start to run like shit.

  • @frosty9595 ...and you will never know if your MAP sensor is accurate. It's not enough to see voltage change with vacuum change. You must see if the voltage corresponds to vacuum according to this chart: w w w. aa1car. com/library/map_sensors. htm (remove space after each dot, and between w's)

  • Excellent video! I have the same vacuum pump model so this made my test a snap.

  • Does this apply to any vehicle that has a map sensor?

  • @Yearonecamaro I think all map sensors work the same way they just have different connections

  • where can I purchase a simple smoke machine My Ford e250 4.9 give codes 171 and 174 Bank 0ne and two lean How can I find the vacuum leak and where should I start to look Cpttrevor

  • where can I purchase a simple smoke machine

  • You said that the voltage decreases with an increase in pressure. No, the voltage decreases with an increase in vacuum, which is a decrease in pressure. Otherwise, great!

  • Great job!!!

  • very nice thank you!

this is going to help me on my megasquirt installation...

  • That's the same one I got on my S10.

  • Thanks.

  • I'm troubleshooting a high idle on my 93 Jimmy. This video was amazingly helpful! Thank you for posting such a valuable procedure. I was able to rule the MAP sensor out as a possible problem.

  • @smilinscandinavian .......your problem is probably more like a vacuum leak than a map sensor problem !!

  • Well done for making a clear video and explaining things properly - Ive watched about 20 before this one and they were all incomprehensible!!

  • THX BUBBY ! ! ! !

  • Can't you also read the Pressure reading off your scanner? I believe its the MAP that provides the pressure to the PCM.

  • @RobertGary1 what if you dont have a scanner ;)

  • @Josh211203 What if you don't have a wrench? I really don't think its reasonable to do much DIY auto repair today without purchasing at least a basic scanner. They're not too expensive and they can really be fundamental to diagnosing issues.

  • I killed mine by accident the other day, I had just replaced the intake manifold & throttle body gasket and for some noob reason I put my hand *close* to the throttle plate and the bugger sucked my palm in stalling the engine and blowing out the MAP with it. $100 part &%$#@

  • I have a bad map sensor on my lincoln town car. When I get full gas I have 380 sometimes 388 miles total of gas. When I disconnect the negative on my battery my gas milage rises to 450miles on the tank.

  • i had a friend scan my car and the check engine light reads the map sensor. it bogs and looses power and eat alot of gas i had put 5 gallon and i burn it in less than 15 miles

  • One can damage that thing if you apply too much vacuum in it. So be carefull. Some cars uses, MAF sensor. It works by a fact that as air pass through a heated element it cools down, which in turn changes its resistance. Op amp circuitry amplifies this minute difference and sends it to the computer. Without the circuit, the small signal would be useless because the computer would be recieving all sort of electromagnetic waves from radio stations, nearby power lines etc from the wiring.

  • I recently fixed a 95 Ford Taurus that dies rightb away after starting. If I pump the gas pedal it stay on. If I stopped pumping, it would die. I suspected Map sensor, sure enough the voltage did not change as I applied vacuum to it. To be sure I rigged up a map sensor from a GM 4 cylinder truck. They basically work the same only the connectors, and sizes are diffrent. After that I was 100% sure it was the problem. Only then I bought a new one, and problem was solved.

  • @tangnatalaga whats can cause misfire on low rpm? could it be map sensor? i already clean it but it still didnt solve my problem. do i need a new placement or the problem could lies eles where?

  • @BlueRice That is a maf sensor. To check find find which is th output signal then while the car is on the on position blow air to the filament voltage should change. Idle problem can be caused by a lot of things. eg the egr valve stucked open. a bad injector. a bad tps, even bad plugs and wires. even bad pcv valve. if the car vibrates at idle it could also be the motor mount. so don't forgbet that.

  • @tangnatalaga wow, your assumption is good. ny motor mount is bad. it has only 5% life left. its about to break off. so i take that in consideration.

i change my spark plug last month its has corrosion on it but i didnt change the spark wire yet. im replacing that soon. i took it to the mechanic they also said what you said but i want to replace one by one instead all at once - cheaper. ill check maf before i replace the injector. i need to find where is my egr valve too. im kinda rookie...

  • @562boyz If the car vibrates at a steady pace then it is surely the motor mount. Also watch the engine idle while on park. if it looks fairly steady. If the engine looks fairly steady while idling on park then the motor mount is the cause of the vibration.

  • @562boyz If the car vibrates at a steady pace then it is surely the motor mount. Also watch the engine idle while on park, if it looks fairly steady. If the engine looks fairly steady while idling on park then the motor mount is the cause of the vibration.

  • @tangnatalaga btw, 562boyz is me. i forgot to logon my account. im at library while replying to you and forgot to log off someone's account.

ill keep yoy updated once i get it fix thanks for the advice

  • @BlueRice

  • @BlueRice If the EGR valve is stucked open for example due to too much carbon, you will have a misfire on low rpm. Sometimes it may even stall the engine if the EGR vavle s stucked open wide enough. There are other possibilities but this is a common cause.

  • @tangnatalaga One of my vehicles does some serious vibration if I drive an extended period of time or drive at a high speed. Of course, I also have the exact problems as you had described. If I rev the car while sitting at a red light or stop sign, the car usually stays on but if I don't, the engine will cut off. Did you experience any vibration when at a red light or or stop sign? Or, maybe it's my motor mount, but what that cause the engine to idle?

  • very cool. and awesome camera work. most other car repair videos suck on camera placement.

  • Is it probable that a bad MAP would cause a 96'SL1 to have bad mpg w/o the surging?

    Tnx

  • wow thanks dude!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Where can we find the Volt/psi data for different MAP sensors? This sensor is about .2 Volts/psi, but how do other MAP sensors differ?

  • Google it.

  • Thanks Rich! Great video as always. I could have used this a few weeks ago. Darn. Doesn't matter, just changed it out... was good enough for me.

For those interested, the Delphi Part Number is PS10075 for the second generation Saturns (like Richpin's).

  • Thanks so much for doing these videos. I put 65 miles a day on my 2000 Saturn going to work. I need this kind of information to help me keep it in service. It has 160k on it and this stuff will start to need replacement soon.

  • Why wouldn't the "check engine" light come on if the map sensor was failing?

    Please keep making these videos!

  • Nice!
