Listen to The Jester Race, Colony, Clayman, Whoracle, Subterranean, Black-Ash, etc.
In Flames were gods of melodic death metal right with At the Gates and Dark Tranquillity, setting the groundwork for the genre with the albums Slaughter of the Soul (ATG), The Jester Race, and The Gallery (DT)

Best "melodic" till what?Maybe Clayman?After that piece is all about worst evolution they can be ever made.Today the best melodic death metal band is without any doubt Dark Tranquillity.
