The rule I would impose: Anyone you ask for an autograph must weigh more than you, otherwise you should leave them alone.
Example: You are a 110-pound kid approaching 220 pound Kobe Bryant. Cool. You are a 250 pound fat guy approaching 220 pound Kobe Bryant...leave him alone. Most women or mothers approaching a pro athlete, cool.
This also means that Shaquille O'Neal can be approached by anyone.
Mr. Jabbar wasn't at dinner with his wife. It sounds like he was there making a public appearance for a celebrity baseball game. Signing autographs are part of the gig. Not signing under those circumstances = lame.
On the other hand, no means no. When he said "No" the kid should have let it be (that can be forgiven because he was a kid) but the mother certainly should understand no means no. And who wants the autograph of someone who is rude to them anyway?
Unfortunately Kareem's anti social tendencies have come back to him 10 fold. The highest coaching position he could get was at some high school, no one in the NBA wants to hire him. The Lakers threw him a bone to coach Bynum but that's about it. Magic told stories in his book with Bird about Kareem shunning fans in Magics rookie season. Magic said he would step in and sign stuff when Kareem wouldn't. Kareem now admits those were huge mistakes he wishes he could take back.
"Pearl Jam's Jeff Ament wrote the song "Sweet Lew" about a similar incident when he met Abdul-Jabbar whom he "idolized" at a charity game and got a "complete lack of response or interest". Ament was upset by the incident. The song appears on the Pearl Jam's B-Sides compilation Lost Dogs." -- Wikipedia
Kareem came into the West Hills Fallbrook 7 General Cinema in the mid 90s (I was working there) and refused to sign a napkin for a kid in an empty lobby. I do agree w/Adam that he must get bugged daily, but he should have a better response like, "im sorry, i never sign autographs. Glad to meet you though!". as I remember it, his response was short and curt."
wow that sucks, you wonder whats going on in kareems head when he keeps saying no? it takes more effort to say no then to sign the ball? makes no sense
I had a similar situation with Rick James. He sponsored a neighborhood ball team and was sitting in the bleachers. He wouldn't sign autographs for the kids. I wanted to spit on him.
Shortly after Adam brought up how he told Jabbar that tall people don't live long on his own podcast, Kareem announced he had Leukemia. Adam has perfect timing lol.

It always seems like basketball players are the biggest pieces of shit in sports, they should send their ass back to the street where they belong.

Kareem is still one of the all-time greatest dagger-in-the-heart basketball players of all time - I love him - and I'm a die-hard Celtics fan.
