Good save. Safer to pull ears than steep accelerated S turns near the ground I reckon. Maybe pull them earlier and release one at a time gently before landing? I think the stall when releasing ears is more to do with the sharp brake input, combined with the low airspeed and the wing behind the pilot - not a good combination.
Steve, I'm still very much a novice with 22 flights this week, and I agree with your acessment. I have heard P4s with thousands of flights say that some LZs present more hazards for the pilot that uses big ears. At the Tiger Mountain LZ, the practice here is fairly typical.
Proud? Are you kidding? I am glad I didn't land in a tree. As we all know, we make risk acessments. On a stable student wing, very light wind, 'small' big ears on approach is likely better than flying into the side of a barn or tree. For those who make time to read, ALL of my landings are practice landings. Did you have it mastered at flight 8?
George B is old, but not dead yet. Beautiful Tiger Mountain is just 20 minutes away from our urban home. Some people think this is for the birds, but it suits me just fine. This landing is less than perfect, To keep from over shooting the run way, I pulled some lines to create 'big ears' where I increased my sink rate. Without a motor, there's no going around again.

did you land sitting down or what?

Landing with big ears?! Don't be proud of that.
Ever heard about something called stall (you could get there rather easy by pulling big ears as you reduce your speed significantly).
My oppinion: Better practice a bit more you landing skills to hit the spot without pulling big ears.

Doesn't it make you feel like a bird...floating quietly in the sky?
Cool!

It's pretty cool, there are soarign birds that work the same air space as we fly here, mighty cool to turn with a soaring bird.

Great job. I would like to try that some time.
