I couldn't agree more that mature language is an essential skill to have as students and young professionals. However, if we don't have a good foundation of vocabulary set in place from the beginning and we start to use the mature languages, it might end up back firing if you do not know how to use it properly. This video is great for pointing out some tips that will help those who are unsure of how to use mature language appropriately.
Not much else can be said other than the fact that if you're in 3rd/4th year of University & unable to demonstrate professional writing skills, there's a problem. Separately, (& without factual basis) I would imagine that the way the human brain processes language internally (thought) versus externally, must be different in the sense that external communication involves body language & tone whereas written communication requires eloquence & syntax to paint the same mental image. I agree completely. I personally try to use mature language in all of my assignments but this never happens during the first draft. This is why a second or third draft of an assignment or essay is very important. This is mainly due to the fact that we think using everyday simple words. This thought process must then be translated into mature language, helping us to differentiate University level papers by making it sound educated.
This video has done a great job of emphasizing how important it is to use mature language in a professional university paper. I completely agree with Prof. Richardson's point that university students (specially 3rd and 4th year) should not "write like they talk". Also, reviewing is the key to writing a good quality paper.
Personally, I strongly agree with Prof Richardson. I think the way we talk and interact on a more casual peer to peer basis should be kept faraway from they way we display ourselves in a professional manner. When it comes to a professional university paper, there should be no excuse to use such slang and common everyday language. The simple use of a thesaurus can make a world of difference!
Great! Revision by someone other then yourself is important in ensuring you are not using informal language. They can point out the corrections which the original writer might have overlooked. I agree with Trisha, it is easier for many students to communicate a point by using everyday language rather then use an intellectual tone. A student might unknowingly stray off topic when using mature language simply because they are not accustomed to using it in their everyday life.
This is why revising and editing an essay is important. When you are simply "getting your thoughts out", you are bound to use informal language. However, once that draft is complete, one should revise and edit those sentences or even paragraphs according to what you have just stated, "Mature Language".
I think the root of the problem is the lack of use of mature language in everyday conversations. Most students are accustomed to talking in a relaxed and informal tone from using instant messaging/texting/using social networking sites. There is a writing course at UTM that teaches all of the points that you made in the video, I think it would be helpful if that course was made a requirement.
This was very helpful. I think the reason why some people choose to write in a collequial tone is because it's easier to get your point across flawlessy by simply 'writing it verbatim as you say it.' Whereas attempting to sound more 'professional' sometimes deviates us away from getting our point across in the pursuit of choosing 'more appropriate' words to tailor a fancy sentence.
That's probably why people advocate a standard written English test in universities. As a respond, CCIT department offers a new course called "writing and research methods in communication" as a required course for students. The goal is described as " to train students to write effectively about theoretical and research issues. Assessment will be based on written assignments." MGD415 Sarah Lu

@abzoni "the lack of use of mature language in everyday conversations" - true, we tend to think it is "uncool" to speak well

Great advice! My English teacher always said 'Avoid redundant phrases and wordiness!' I think a thesaurus would be a great help to mature language.
