Is it just me or does "a" sound too similar to "ä"? Most times I don't even get the difference... Especially when it is placed between consonants. Is it true or what?
@weetikissa Oh yes, I know the difference between them! I just cannot "hear" it that good when I listen to finnish songs or people speaking finnish. Maybe it's just me, I don't know... I just feel like I could pronounce "päivä" as "paiva" and most people won't notice the difference, especially in fast talk! True or not?
@TheMoreTheMerrier21 Hmmm, that's an interesting question. People WILL notice if you mispronounce letters such as ä, ö, and y, as it is quite a stereotypical mistake for foreigners to make. Or then it could be us, mumbling all those words, but to me, the difference seems pretty clear: älä (don't) and ala (a field of industry) should not be confused in any case. Perhaps it's something you have to get used to, maybe your ear is untrained to those phonemes?
@weetikissa Yes, maybe... Although I have no problem with o/ö and u/y, plus I can easily "feel" the difference in english or german, both of which have the phoneme "ä (æ)" in their phonologies. Maybe it's the fact that in finnish this sound (æ) is much more frequent than in most other languages. I have no problem pronouncing either ö, y or even ä, I just have a small problem detecting "ä" everytime I listen to spoken finnish. My mouth can say it, but my ear won't (clearly) hear it!

@TheMoreTheMerrier21 "A" sounds like the u in "but", and "ä" is the same thing as the a in "cat".
