  • no.. not the same .. yes the boss had more high end.. the e.h. seemed to have more dirt to it ..

the boss seemed to add a little dirt after the fact.. but both sound great.

  • "Muff on Muff Action"...

    That's what she said.

  • Clean 2:24, - Big MUff 2:43, - Boss' Muff Setting 3:10

  • As far as the title goes...that's what she said.

  • this better be good

  • Suddenly I got interested in the Satanic Dreamcatchers on the wall . My mind kept wandering after his face showed up and I found out that it wasn't Ben Stein doing the review ! Good shootout though--I was maybe going to get an OD-20 but prefer the Big Muff so I ordered the new Germanium 4 Muff to add to my board. I like Fuzz . You know what's a great one ? Those Analogman Sunfaces & Barber Trifectas---and of course the EH Muffs. That's my 2 cents worth .

  • @OctomomsBaby - you seem to know your gear, but the whole 'Satanic Dreamcatcher' thing is way off... did you know the pentagram was once used in the Christian church to symbolize the 5 wounds of Christ?

FOR THE RECORD - THE FIVE POINTS OF THE PENTAGRAM REPRESENT THE FOUR BASIC ELEMENTS OF THE ENTIRE WORLD: AIR, FIRE, WATER, AND EARTH, WITH THE TOP-MOST POINT REPRESENTING OUR SPIRIT, WHICH RULES OVER ALL. See? There's nothing 'evil' about it.

  • @tony93666 -Ha ! Touche' Tony ! You have schooled me ! I knew nothing about the pentagram BUT--I didn't mean to imply "evil" in my comment . As an atheist, I don't even believe in Satan other than a rearrangement of some letters--you have "Santa " ! Now THAT is some evil shit as my recent credit card debt will show ! Your playing sounded like Sabbath-type minor stuff-that's all. Should have my EH Ge4 in a few days.If that doesn't do it for me, it'll be a tossup with the other 2.

  • @OctomomsBaby - no problem at all, and no offense taken... it's just become abit tedious, as I'm sure you can imagine with the dreck that inhabits youtube(and most of the world, for that matter. LOL Abit misanthropic, but... ).

I think you'll totally dig the EH Ge4. The Wicker Big Muff is killer too. The others are abit too pricey, at least for my wallet.

  • does this pedal have true bypass??? i dont want it to ruin my clean tones

  • @sk8r4punkrock1guitar - no it doesn't. Read the article "THE TRUTH ABOUT “TRUE BYPASS " on the Tech 21 website. Also see "The case against true bypass" written by Pete Cornish. He's a LEGEND in guitar effects building... he knows what he's talking about.

  • - regarding Pete Cornish - he's designed rigs for stars such as Roxy Music; The Police; Queen; Pink Floyd; Bryan Adams; Lou Reed; Dire Straits; Paul McCartney; Sting; Jimmy Page; Judas Priest; Black Sabbath....

  • @tony93666 I Prefer The Boss OD-20 it have more effects.

  • This guy loves geometry , I can see it on his walls...

  • @dewalwalers - LOL

  • i own the od 20 and i just wanted to say that the reason the sound may not b the exact same is because the tone knob on the od 20 is ultra responsive and also the drive knob goes in to "turbo", which basically adds more gain than the modeled pedal does, after a certain point so that might be why the noise is present. i recommend this pedal its really tweakable and cheap if you buy from ebay like i did. i picked mine up for 60 dollars :D

  • your pentagram should be at an angle.

    shemhamforash

  • so the noise it makes is true...

    also sounds thin...

planning to buy, but thanks to this demo...

  • @sergeramic - the cheap digital camera makes it sound thin - it isn't.

  • i don't think it's your "cheap" dgcam...

your big muff sounds punchy and live

    and is dynamic

besides you got a lot of hum when you engaged the od-20 ...but again nice demo

  • @tony93666

    Hello,

Thanks for the comparison, I'm tempted by both pedals, nice to know there's not much in it, sound wise.

anyhoo.. couldn't help but notice the background and thought praps you might like my musical Beltane offering.

    Bright Blessings mate

  • @tony93666

tried to send link, but youtube didn't like a link.

so just do a search for "Italia Rimini guitar" it's called "The Beckoning

  • I think the boss has more treleble and a little cut-through tone with like you said a lot of high end

  • JUDE? damn burn yourself

  • neo-nazi skinhead asshole? damn, fuck yourself.

  • Sounds great Tony, Gavin Rossdale from Bush uses a lot of muff effects, especially on Everything Zen, from Razorblade Suitcase.

  • Great demo, just wondering if there is any lag when changing between patches on the od20.

    Cheers!

  • very, very slight... in a live situation, it wouldn't be noticeable at all.

    thanks for your comment

  • Awesome, exactly what i needed to know.

    Thanks for the speedy reply!

  • no prob

  • 5 stars for the name

  • thanks!

  • I like both sounds myself.

But to me, it doesn't really matter too much, there are so many other usefull bits of kit out there to mash your sounds up with and create your own sounds with

The sound you get is entirely down to your own inventiveness and creativity.

Sod trends... do your own thing !!

That way the music is truly yours !!

Well.... that's my opinion anyhoo :)

  • I agree 100%!

  • iSP Decimator better than a gate, transparent, For me the Boss sounds better and could probably add more tone.

  • how much did that boss one cost you? that shit looks interesting also what other kinds of distortion tones can you get from that?

  • they run $179 new, but I got mine from someone for $80 and a Bad Monkey overdrive pedal that I never used(I had 2).

    The tones the OD-20 does: (each knob setting has 2 variations) OD-1/OD-2, DS-1/BD-2, MT-2/HM-2, METAL/LOUD, CRUNCH/STACK, BOOST/LEAD, TS-808 Tube Screamer/Fulltone Full Drive 2, MXR Distortion+/Klon Centaur, Marshall Guv'nor/ProCo RAT, Rockman/Big Muff Pi, Fuzz Face/Acetone (octave)Fuzz

the only one I don't like is the Rockman - it's the Boston(band) sound... which I hate.

  • Boston rocks!!!

  • you can have em... LOL

  • what boston? . . . .

  • back in the 1980's, Tom Scholz, the founder/guitarist of the rock group Boston, invented a sort of headphone amp called 'the Rockman' that pretty well emulated the general guitar tone he used in the group's music, like in the song "More than A Feeling", for example. The OD20 has that tone in it. I hate it -maybe others like it. It's none of my business.

  • i listened to the song and i liked the tone, is the OD20 digital or analog? . . . . i do not like digital distortions like FAB tone. most of their pedals suck.

  • I have no idea, but this is soooooooooooo much better than the FAB tone, it's not even in the same league. It's a great pedal, seriously, try it out in real life and see if it will suit you. Youtube's sound quality is pretty bad overall, so there's no way one can make a final decision on gear based on online videos.

  • loooll of couse its digital. "Cosm" emulating on it

all double pedals are digital. and even some single pedals from many brands including boss, are in fact, digital.

still this is way diferent from any FAB pedal...

  • you are absolutely correct.

Every CD we own is digital too...and 99% of the albums recorded nowadays are done in Pro Tools, Cubase, etc. As far as gear goes, it's not as important as it was 10-20 years ago - technology has progressed, despite what the tube snobs repeat ad nauseum.

I personally could care less HOW a sound is generated... if I like it, that's all that counts.

  • lots of stuff are digital and we dont even think about them when we play. to record at home i use PODx3L wich is 100%digital

althought i like some analogic stuff, like Xotic BB -preamp, boutique overdrive kinda stuff.

in chorus for example: ive been testing some, and the CH1 gives me the smoothest notiçable chorus for clean chords, in other settings a nice bigvibe for overdrive.

for me most of the analog chorus are limited in some of these 2settings

but why everyone wants analog nowdays? =S

  • *nods* alot of people are just following trends, not thinking for themselves...

  • im really not trying to be an ass. just a thought: when you set the tone, wouldn't it be more appropriate to search for the desired tone instead of setting the knobs in the exact same positions. i mean, the goal is to obtain a tone, not an image. so set the pedals with your ears more than your eyes because the od-20 was meant to replicate a sound--which you have to pin-point with your ears. awesome video, thanks!

  • you're not being an ass - just missing the point. I was directly comparing the real Big Muff to a model of one in the OD20, hence setting the knobs exactly the same. It's a comparison of the factory's tonal design, not my 'tone dialing-in abilities'.

  • sorry but I have to ask: are you jewish or satanist? im asking cause you got both a star of david and a pentagram hanging on your walls

  • your lack of knowledge - and courtesy - is both sad and annoying.

  • i say that the od 20 is much edgier? XD

but i just like boss pedals a bit more, sorry XD

  • nothing to be sorry about - it's all subjective - I still have/like em both!

  • ahah cool! XD

  • This vieo helped me alot. nice equipment by the way.

  • thanks!

  • TATABEEE!!

  • is that good? LOL

  • You can hear the Boss does have a tad more treble hence it sounds slightly clearer.

  • get a fucking noise gate

  • get a fucking clue

  • good one sir~

  • noise gates are the scum of the guitar loving world...

  • hows that?

    all they do is help.

  • go listen to Electric Wizard or Acid King and tell me if they need a noise gate...

  • DAMN i thought this video was about lesbians by the title........:)

  • LOL gotcha!! ^_^

  • nice video bro !

  • thank you!!

  • BOTH, damnit!

  • I agree!

  • boss sounds better

  • i love the od 20 can it be used wiv a bass?

  • yes

  • Both sounded Good

  • I agree - I still own both and don't plan on selling em anytime soon.

  • also, i have a Boss Fuzz FZ-5, and i can get Muff Fuzz, Fuzz Face and Some other Fuzz effect with it and cant get a load of sustain out of that

  • It could be possible that your pickups are too close to your strings and the magnetic pull(pickups have magnets inside) is messing with your strings natural vibration...

Press the strings down on the last fret and the Bridge pickup should be adjusted about 1/16" from the strings. The neck pickup should be adjusted 1/8" on each side. Let go of the strings (from the last fret) and it should work pretty good for you.

    ~ Seymour W. Duncan

  • the other fuzz is the maistro fuzz.i dont think i spelled that right.

  • nah its octavia, but ur right about maistro fuzz, i thought it was muff fuzz but it is maistro, u get F M O fuzz face, maistro and octavia

  • maestro

  • at the end with the sustain test, i cant get that long sustain with my metal core pedal, can u explain this? i have double coil humbuckers, no noise suppresors, my guitars signal just loses all noise like the strings stopped vibrating, am i possible doing a sustain wrong?

  • 2:47

    vs

    3:13

  • sounds exactly the same

  • no it dont listen to the bass and treble of the sound

  • Hmmm...I agree - the OD20 Muff is definitely less bassy. PRetty cool.

  • I have it and LOVE it :DD

  • if u can get 4 memory slots, can u save the memory and have a setting when ur not on a memory then press memory button to get between them and actually have 5 different settings, just 4 in memory and 1 can be customised?

  • yes, you can design 4 tones any way you want and save them, then use the manual mode for another, for 5 tones on tap at the push of a button.

  • the OD20 have more feed back im i wrong? will it be a good buy?

how many pedals can i conect?

  • more feedback? no, I think they're the same, but the OD20 gives you more controls, the Big Muff just has volume/tone/gain.

I think the OD20 is a GREAT buy!

I have connected 6 pedals at the same time...

  • cool demo man. i'll say that they are virtually the same. i think there is more tone control on the od20 though. but if you look at other factors, the big muff is true bypass. od-20 is just a buffered bypass. so if you think about it in performing wise... your clean tone might be affected. but really it depends on what or how you like it.

  • An FX Loop could prevent that correct?

  • yeah... have one customized or something. or just buy a non-germanium fuzz. i think the big muff russia uses silicon instead of germanium.

  • Thanks bro

  • wow! i need to get an od-20

  • i just wish you played a bit flashier

  • you and me both... LOL ^_^

  • just practice more riffs!

  • riffage I can do - but solos elude me...

  • I have this pedal, and i like it alot. The bad thing is, there are more than 4 tones i like, so, pick your best!

  • I actually perfer the od 20.

I just love that Boss tone.

  • yup - I love BOSS stuff. They get flack because of all the "boo-teek" craze, 75% of which is nothing but hype, with about 25% innovative stuff. BOSS is 'the old reliable' - you can always count on it!

  • what about fuzz i don't like alot of noise when i am not playing and am looking for a pedal with as little noise as possible

  • you could get a noise gate, like the Boss NS-2, but yeah - when it comes to fuzz, noise is part of the package! hehehe

  • does the OD20 feel and sound like analog stuff?

  • I believe it is analog

  • can you switch from overdriven tones to the clean tone of you amp?

  • yes, there are 2 switches on the OD20, one to change between 4 presets, and one to turn the entire pedal on and off. You just set your amp for a clean tone, then get your distorted sound from the pedal. Same thing with the Big Muff(but just one sound at a time)...

  • the Od20 simulate a blues driver pedal?

  • yes - it does 22 different overdrive and distortions in all.

  • correct me if im wrong but i think the muff has a lot more sustain than the OD20, i want to get an overdrive pedal and i saw the OD20 yesterday, $120, sounds kinda cheap for the whole pack of sounds it can deliver. How much did it cost you?

  • there's more than just a pedal in the 'sustain chain' - guitar wood, pickups, amp, etc. Both are great, and I LOVE my USA Big Muff. Even at retail, the OD20 is a FANTASTIC deal for all the various tones it can give you. I got mine in a pedal trade, plus some cash.

  • I would agree. I own an od 20 and it is very useful for anything you want which makes it indespensible. And unless you are going for your own sound that you want, this may or may not be the pedal for you.

  • OD-20 is great! mine just came for quite a bargain too..!!

could you make a video showing some cool metal tones or something plezzzzzzzz man

  • really good man

    I'm planning to get the od20 tomorr0w

    its good enough f0r me

and with a little adjustment in the amp

it can s0und as go0d as the muff
