Did you know one in three homeless people is a veteran? I agree that bouncing back is a high virtue, but some traumas are harder to recover from than others.
Even if the world looks fucked up together with your parents (I heard about how the animals don't know how to relate to their kids from friends and various sources) you still have to try your best in life.
How can someone say "3/4 of homeless people are employed, just not paid enough to get a house." Question- even if they bring in minimum wage, (which, in america averages 9 bucks an hour) at part time (25hours a week) that'd average out to roughly 185 a week after tax. If they have no phone, place to live, bills at all... Wheres all the money goin? 3/4 of them are not employed. No one is hating them or "making themsleves feel superior" to them.
I love that a middle class, white man, who lives in Venice, CA is commenting on the character of homelessness, which he probably has no clue about. Hey PhillyD, did u know that about 3/4 of homeless people are actually employed, its only that they ARE NOT PAID ENOUGH TO ACTUALLY GET A HOUSE. So they literallu go to work in the morning and come back to a street corner. Asshole!!!!
I don't like people who've obviously given up either. I have gone through lots of shit and I keep coming back. My motto is "Never give up, never give in." Anyway, love you PhillyD!!! Keep keepin' it real.
Your self-examination is refreshing. You're a decent human being down deep. Remember, home is where the heart is. Some people have beautiful homes, but their hearts are out in the cold. At the end of our lives, no one will care what you owned, but rather whose life you touched. I'm pretty sure you've touched many of us (in a good, non-predatory way).God Bless You Phil!

I can't believe this video. I have known homeless people who tried again and again to get a job at various places and were turned down for multiple reasons, including lack of documentation (like IDs and social security numbers), and their personal appearances, which obviously they cannot help. You don't seem to know half of what many of these people have been through.

@AlbeeWanKenobi there's a big difference between running away from home for a few weeks and being permanently homeless with no mommy or daddy to run back to.
I completely disagree Phil there are people that simply can't bounce back like the mentally disabled, who I come into contact with almost everyday in New York and people with no family or support system these people don't have the means of getting up and deciding to be successful or "bouncing back"
phil my man, enjoy the show however, I don't really think that your in a position to criticise homeless people at the age you are 24, 25 whatever. Unless you've had some real hard times in your short life then you can't really relate to these peoples situations. The fact that you compare having your life torn a part, homeless, addicted to drugs, to losing weight ie. lose an olsen twin really does show you as being very immature and possibly spoilt. Like the show dude think before you rant dude
dude. Many homeless are mentally ill. Blame your shit leaders for not providing for the sick. If you became mental you would have the family to help i bet. Most bums dont.
Well Philip.. I thought you were going to be a complete asshole about this subject, but you made some really good points and like how your viewing things. I am 1 of those who managed to bounce back. I was homeless for a spell after I relocated and the job offer I had, fell through. It was very scary being in a state ive never been in.. no money, didnt know anyone, and no family within 1000 miles of me. I was lucky and landed a solid job through a temp company and got back on my feet..
This video is my like my life complaint....you took what I say at work on a daily bases and made it an inspirational vlog...um...you rock my socks off.
I completely agree. I'm the type of person who always wants to help others & feels bad about things beyond my control but sometimes I go "wait why should I feel bad? They got themselves into it". @MOTHIKAS you are clueless, trust me. I am reminded that the talentless feel the need to deride those with talent. Try having an original thought on your own. I doubt you can do it.
Logan you are probably the most ignorant person on the internet right now. So half of the homeless people are mentally disabled and the other half is addicted to crack? Have you ever actually spoken to a homeless person in your life? I feel really sorry for you.
Loved this vlog!Totally agree! If every one would keep trying the world would be a more positive place(: instead of a depressing one...full of giver uppers:(
I'm technically homeless but I mean, really....it was a choice and I'm not planning on being that way forever but yeah it does make me mad when i give a homeless person some food and they throw it away and continue holding up their "hungry" sign
I'm still bouncing back from your Tornado vloggity oh dear God my stomach is so sick from it even cloverfield did'nt make me this seasick/vlogsick!! Hey i'm so with you on the homeless issue, ours will freeze all winter in Dublin at least in LA its warm enough for them to sleep outside.
Sorry my last comment so really badly fraised, Im not a fat guy what i mean is do you relax in ways that dont require effort like playing computer games? somthing not challenging physically or mentally?
Most homeless are Mentally ill!!!! On Top of alcoholism or whatever so it's not about giving up. You'd understand if u had family or friend with adult onset schizo or something else.
Those Dyson fans are expensive! So you're obviously not near homeless, unless you soon develop a psychotic break and your family can't deal.
I work in Toronto and I get the love/hate relationship with the homeless.... They should carry their autobiography and sell it.... for cheap, I'd probably buy it even if it's written on 100 napkins....
Something good could eventually come out of it and it's not like they have anything better to do.... wait that was rude. True (ish) but rude
What your describing Phil is called "Pride". We all have ups and downs but how we carry ourselves and how we deal with life is a testament to ourselves and hopefully if we live well we can influence others into making good choices and caring about themselves.
I would also like to point out how this vid illustrates how important family is, when your at your lowest most likely only family will be there for you, sadly some people don't have connections like that and drown without a helping hand.
Lots of homeless people are mentally ill, so it's not always as simple as choosing to bounce back or not. The homeless are generally people who are down and out and in need. Judging them does not help.
This is ironic. Just last night my friend flipped his car 3 times and almost died. I was about to go drowned myself in booze but I decided to fast it like a man. I guess life is just a big ass that shits on you. You're like my youtube counselor Phil. And as long as I'm not homeless and own a computer I will keep watching.
I feel the same way . I see it everywhere here in costa mesa. I know alot of people who were homless and bounced back and I still see some who are on the streets doing nothing to try to make life better for them selves
Some homeless people make (or steal) some pretty cool shit. I bought a hand-made leather wallet from a homeless dude in New Orleans for 5 bucks 10 years ago. I am still using the same wallet. Its engraved with my initials and wolves all over it.
It always get me so curious, when some of you big youtubers drop the line of 'the other tubers that lie, and are deceitful abt themselves' - can't someone out them, so we can stop supporting their videos or smthg? Cus it's just ... gaaah..... x.x
Well I dont know about you Phil, but whenever im down on my luck and pot broke(And by that I mean sleeping in a car and still hav'nt had to pawn my laptop!) I like to put together a video where I basically ask for donations from my subscribers! Maybe you could lend these poor guys your iphone so they could do the same....
Try not tot forget where you came from cos it can come back and bite you on the ass you fucking hypocrite!
The worst thing about homelessness is that it shouldn't exist and we all know it. Whether you are left or right leaning, either way its a bit of a sore spot. I think we should just bite the bulllet and fix it through public/private partnerships, maybe give some funding to goodwill or salvation army so they can expand. Or heck, build a crapload of army barracks style housing on the cheap. It could be solved.
These matters are neither black nor white, just shades of grey. There cannot be absolute statements here. How can you know how hard has life screwed someone over? Is there a measure of "hardness"?
Phil says he's been shitted upon by life many times but he always bounces back. Most of us can say the same thing, because simply put, how hard we're hit is relative to our own perception of "hard". You can never know what a homeless person's been through... just saying.
As a potential homeless person in a family (Do to medical bills, car being totaled and other crap) I got to agree with what Phil said. I mean Life sucks and shit happens but you just got to keep trying to bounce back. By looking for a job or multiple jobs, doing a garage sale, not buying things you dont need like games :( and most of all making sure you go to work even if you got to walk miles or find a friend to take you.. oh and yeah staying positive helps even thought it sucks most of the time
I would also like to remind you of the people who are homeless because of political/ethical reasons. I for one believe rent is theft, property and ownership are pointless ideas because people SHOULD just share what they have (that way no one is in need and no one has too much) and I would rather sleep under a bridge and eat out of dumpsters than sell my soul and morals to work for some corporation that is part of a system that doesn't value human life, just profit.
@empihsrow Then you get what you get for your own stupidity.
"Proffit" is how I pay for my car, land, and toys. I love how it has been turned into a "dirty" word. Making money is not a crime it is a reward for doing something well, fucking hippies.
Phill can you do a Phill vs hippies and please make it epic......even if you don't agree with either side.
@empihsrow then that's what you will do, and that is fine. but don't go out and ask for help from people who do make those compromises in order to have the things you are rejecting.
When life shits on me (or my douchebag family brings me down) I cry for about 2 hours than I grow some balls and I prove them wrong but most of the time I fail :P
You do have a valid point. I live here in Seattle, its not the best of cities but at the same time I work my ass off just to keep a roof over my head. When I see someone my same age who seems to have it worse off, I dont know how to help and also, In the back of my mind I get angry. Many of them claim to not have a home to go to but neither did I at some point. I was kicked out soon as I graduated highschool and at least I had that.
Mentally ill homeless people is precisely why I lock my car doors while driving. Never know when someone is gonna flip. And nothing against homeless people but, I go to my shitty ass job everyday to earn money and they want some of my money for free. Yeah. Right. I hate my life daily to earn that dollar so I think I'm gonna keep it for myself. Thnx. Don't hate them, just not a fan.
Hey! don't you talk bad about LAZY people... lemme tell you something buddy... eh nevermind to much work. Time to go lay down and take a nap in my cardboard box.
Interesting note, Hobo with a Shotgun was being filmed last spring 2 streets up from my apt building in Halifax, NS. Blocked off a side of the street for production equipment and trailers.
you know how for your mpg you've got about 3 other successful channels? well one channel should definitely be a parody channel, just parodies, and it'd be awesome
Alot of homeless people are schizophrenic, bipolar, or have some kind of other mental illness.... and the rest are addicted to crack. But either way most of these people are completely unfunctional and aren't really capable of finding a home.
@loganmo100 : You're an idiot, there are normal everyday people who lose their homes because of the shit economy and ever growing prices of food and shelter.
I'd like to help, but lets face it, 5 bucks is not gonna help anyone that's why I think the government and society should help more. It doesn't really matter why or how they got to where they are, no one deserve to be in that situation. I don't live in the US but even I know that the government/people takes better care of homeless animals (SPCA etc.) than homeless people. Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that organizations like the SPCA exist, but there should be something similar for ppl.
@nevers4yforever The government/people takes better care of homeless animals because they can't go out and get a job; But let's not forget that there are PLENTY of things for people that are struggling, [food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, welfare, food stamps, etc.] It only seems like there isn't because the government doesn't go around throwing nets over hobos to bring them to safety. They have to do it themselves.
I never give my money to homeless people because they put themselves in the situation they are in. I work hard at the job I hate lol so I'm keeping my money.
Keep spending money at the BIG box store you know who I am talking about . You will see more homeless . All these homeless used to work for big corp who have moved opperations to china. Big box is direct receiver from china
I would say the homeless actually, take advantage of their current position, (Gigity), but, their just normal humans like you and me, its just that the world put them down, that dose not mean their something less than me or you, but. I don't know. If I was one of them. I would try to "Fix" my life. But not everyone thinks the way I do.
Around here most of the homeless people arent actually homeless. they have homes and money, just no job (besides pan-handling) this is why I slant towards the "get a job" reaction.
I'm an out of work combat veteran too (assuming they aren't just lying), but you don't see me swilling booze out of a 7-eleven cup and begging for a handout.
I'm not sure what my thoughts are , Im somewhere in the middle. Some people have lost jobs/homes/family etc.. But when I see people who are begging for money all day instead of trying to do something about their stuation it pisses me off
Hobo with a Shotgun looks great! With that out of the way, I wanted to say my opinion of the homeless. There are so many people now who have beaten down horrifically by the state the country is in. I feel awful for some of these people because they haven't been able to bounce back. But there are others who choose to live that lifestyle It's easy money, they don't have to work and they care only for drugs or alcohol anyway It's sad to see people who have given up on their life for whatever reason
I know one homeless guy that sells roses on the side of the road. Most people just give him sympathy money, ive only seen a handful of people of bought the roses. But atleast this hobo is trying, plus he has a cool beard.
@connorcole0 but then that just reminds all of the other homeless people that they're homeless :( i mean it's a pretty good idea, if all of them got houses.
i went to my sister's birthday get together in the city about a year ago, and this homeless guy came up to us asking for our rubbish [because he can get money for it] and we somehow struck up a conversation, and he said that basically his life was better collecting peoples rubbish than when he was at home. So it raises the question what his home life was like - how bad it must have been to drive him to the streets and feel better there, despite peoples public opinion about him.
Egypt is defininitely the best holiday ive ever been on, if you go near the coast you can go knee deep in the ocean and fish are swimming around you, it is absolutely amazing. Plus the water is so warm it feels like a bath, the heat is a really dry heat so your not likely to sweat much, so yeah, i really recomend Egypt!!
You're right concerning probably half of homeless people, the other half with mental illness, schizophrenia, clinical depression etc might not have a choice. You make a good point though.
My friend has been homeless a few times. Its hard to bounce back from leaving your home after your mum put a knife to your throat. For some, going homeless is trying to have a better life, not giving up.
When my aunty visited America if she didnt finish a meal at the restraunt she would box it u and give it to a homeless person. At the end of the trip sh took the little soaps and shampoo things from the hotel and she boxed up another meal and she gave t to a homeless man. he told her he was contemplating suicide but he's not since she went to him. Just shows what you can do.
Hey Phil I've just got to step up and remind you of the mentally ill folks that are homeless. When you're in the lost in the darkness of depression or in the throes of a mania you CAN'T think straight. If your brain is misfiring you might not think there's anything worth "bouncing back" for... When all your energy is focused on trying to not kill yourself it's hard to worry about other stuff like where you're going to sleep and what you're going to eat.
@girrl88 very true, many people with schizophrenia end up on the streets and can't afford medication and will then spend their whole lives on the streets not being able to do anything because they are so tormented by hallucinations or voices in their head.
(PS for those who wish to argue: schizophrenia is not the multiple personality disorder, that is dissociative identity disorder. its a common mistake lol)
@girrl88 because I'm so sure you have ever stopped at a highway to help one out. He's just making a point that is more so directed towards "bottom feeders." Don't criticize someone when you know that you're "not better than anyone else."
@Blake69able Actually yeah, I have stopped to help out homeless folks AND I have stopped to help out the mentally ill as well so pffft to you on both counts. If you read my post and thought I was criticizing or saying that I am better than anyone else then you must be feeling defensive because that's not what I wrote.
I simply wrote a post explaining why a certain portion of the homeless are unable to "bounce back". No reason for you to get upset or to be rude.
@peacegirllover He's talking about people that are unable to "bounce back" from the hardships that life throws at them. I'm talking about people that are unable to bounce back as well... what's the difference?
@girrl88 no he is talking about people who are no able to bounce back because they choose not to ,, he clearly says lazy people so you can either view him as a mean person or actually realize what he is saying
@peacegirllover Now hold on a minute. I made a post to remind him that there are people out there that don't have the option of bouncing back. People that he might see as lazy but really aren't.
I do understand what Phil said in his vid and I don't view him as a mean person.
@girrl88 And count it. Also veterans dealing with PTSD are in a similar situation.
What I dislike are the people saying well he got into drugs and it ruined his life. From the time we are in grade school we are told drugs are bad, they lead to a bad life, and well if someone choses to go down that road after the warnings fuck them.

Logan you are probably the most ignorant person on the internet right now. So half of the homeless people are mentally disabled and the other half is addicted to crack? Have you ever actually spoken to a homeless person in your life? I feel really sorry for you.

Do you ever relax?

Shargrailar 1 year ago
Lots of homeless people are mentally ill, so it's not always as simple as choosing to bounce back or not. The homeless are generally people who are down and out and in need. Judging them does not help.
pennyco 1 year ago
This is ironic. Just last night my friend flipped his car 3 times and almost died. I was about to go drowned myself in booze but I decided to fast it like a man. I guess life is just a big ass that shits on you. You're like my youtube counselor Phil. And as long as I'm not homeless and own a computer I will keep watching.

Try not tot forget where you came from cos it can come back and bite you on the ass you fucking hypocrite!
smithyduk 1 year ago
The worst thing about homelessness is that it shouldn't exist and we all know it. Whether you are left or right leaning, either way its a bit of a sore spot. I think we should just bite the bulllet and fix it through public/private partnerships, maybe give some funding to goodwill or salvation army so they can expand. Or heck, build a crapload of army barracks style housing on the cheap. It could be solved.
MrXSpeaks 1 year ago
These matters are neither black nor white, just shades of grey. There cannot be absolute statements here. How can you know how hard has life screwed someone over? Is there a measure of "hardness"?
Phil says he's been shitted upon by life many times but he always bounces back. Most of us can say the same thing, because simply put, how hard we're hit is relative to our own perception of "hard". You can never know what a homeless person's been through... just saying.
Alexellas 1 year ago
As a potential homeless person in a family (Do to medical bills, car being totaled and other crap) I got to agree with what Phil said. I mean Life sucks and shit happens but you just got to keep trying to bounce back. By looking for a job or multiple jobs, doing a garage sale, not buying things you dont need like games :( and most of all making sure you go to work even if you got to walk miles or find a friend to take you.. oh and yeah staying positive helps even thought it sucks most of the time
DaMonkey11 1 year ago
I would also like to remind you of the people who are homeless because of political/ethical reasons. I for one believe rent is theft, property and ownership are pointless ideas because people SHOULD just share what they have (that way no one is in need and no one has too much) and I would rather sleep under a bridge and eat out of dumpsters than sell my soul and morals to work for some corporation that is part of a system that doesn't value human life, just profit.

@empihsrow Then you get what you get for your own stupidity.

Anyway--great vlog.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that organizations like the SPCA exist, but there should be something similar for ppl.
nevers4yforever 1 year ago
@nevers4yforever The government/people takes better care of homeless animals because they can't go out and get a job; But let's not forget that there are PLENTY of things for people that are struggling, [food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, welfare, food stamps, etc.] It only seems like there isn't because the government doesn't go around throwing nets over hobos to bring them to safety. They have to do it themselves.

I would say the homeless actually, take advantage of their current position, (Gigity), but, their just normal humans like you and me, its just that the world put them down, that dose not mean their something less than me or you, but. I don't know. If I was one of them. I would try to "Fix" my life. But not everyone thinks the way I do.
ki4otoyo 1 year ago
Around here most of the homeless people arent actually homeless. they have homes and money, just no job (besides pan-handling) this is why I slant towards the "get a job" reaction.
I'm an out of work combat veteran too (assuming they aren't just lying), but you don't see me swilling booze out of a 7-eleven cup and begging for a handout.

Hobo with a Shotgun looks great! With that out of the way, I wanted to say my opinion of the homeless. There are so many people now who have beaten down horrifically by the state the country is in. I feel awful for some of these people because they haven't been able to bounce back. But there are others who choose to live that lifestyle It's easy money, they don't have to work and they care only for drugs or alcohol anyway It's sad to see people who have given up on their life for whatever reason

i went to my sister's birthday get together in the city about a year ago, and this homeless guy came up to us asking for our rubbish [because he can get money for it] and we somehow struck up a conversation, and he said that basically his life was better collecting peoples rubbish than when he was at home. So it raises the question what his home life was like - how bad it must have been to drive him to the streets and feel better there, despite peoples public opinion about him.

EllenTelly 1 year ago
Hey Phil I've just got to step up and remind you of the mentally ill folks that are homeless. When you're in the lost in the darkness of depression or in the throes of a mania you CAN'T think straight. If your brain is misfiring you might not think there's anything worth "bouncing back" for... When all your energy is focused on trying to not kill yourself it's hard to worry about other stuff like where you're going to sleep and what you're going to eat.
girrl88 1 year ago 48
@girrl88 very true, many people with schizophrenia end up on the streets and can't afford medication and will then spend their whole lives on the streets not being able to do anything because they are so tormented by hallucinations or voices in their head.
(PS for those who wish to argue: schizophrenia is not the multiple personality disorder, that is dissociative identity disorder. its a common mistake lol)
MrDennisDYNAMITE 1 year ago
@girrl88 because I'm so sure you have ever stopped at a highway to help one out. He's just making a point that is more so directed towards "bottom feeders." Don't criticize someone when you know that you're "not better than anyone else."
Blake69able 1 year ago
@Blake69able Actually yeah, I have stopped to help out homeless folks AND I have stopped to help out the mentally ill as well so pffft to you on both counts. If you read my post and thought I was criticizing or saying that I am better than anyone else then you must be feeling defensive because that's not what I wrote.
I simply wrote a post explaining why a certain portion of the homeless are unable to "bounce back". No reason for you to get upset or to be rude.
girrl88 1 year ago
@girrl88 well then those are obviously not the people he is talking about
peacegirllover 1 year ago
@peacegirllover He's talking about people that are unable to "bounce back" from the hardships that life throws at them. I'm talking about people that are unable to bounce back as well... what's the difference?
girrl88 1 year ago
@girrl88 no he is talking about people who are no able to bounce back because they choose not to ,, he clearly says lazy people so you can either view him as a mean person or actually realize what he is saying
peacegirllover 1 year ago
@peacegirllover Now hold on a minute. I made a post to remind him that there are people out there that don't have the option of bouncing back. People that he might see as lazy but really aren't.
I do understand what Phil said in his vid and I don't view him as a mean person.
girrl88 1 year ago
@girrl88 And count it. Also veterans dealing with PTSD are in a similar situation.
What I dislike are the people saying well he got into drugs and it ruined his life. From the time we are in grade school we are told drugs are bad, they lead to a bad life, and well if someone choses to go down that road after the warnings fuck them.
