It's funny how just about everyone knows the song, but hardly anyone knows it's from a musical. So great to be able to connect a storyline with a song whenever you hear it - although it's hardly necessary here, because the song gives you the chills all by itself anyway...
@silvershields lol It's a stand just behind the goal at Anfield (football/soccer stadium) that's famous for Singing You'll Never Walk Alone before a game. Liverpool FC ;)
Listed this song on the 30 day song challenge on Facebook as the song that makes me sad... ever since I was a little girl, I can't explain why the lyrics have made me cry... R+H were very powerful lyric writers indeed.
Nop one can sing this song like Claramae. I did like Christine Johnson's version, but I think Caramae did even better. It has to be sung by a contralto though, as both Claramae and Christine are.
I absolutely love this musical, I have just learnt to sing 'If I Loved You' and it is another beautiful song from this show. I am 16 and I think I was born in the wrong time era, because I really like these types of songs. Shirley Jones has a wonderful voice.
@mirandamae13 No, you were not born in the wrong era. Beautiful music transcends generations. We both love this musical and there's quite a few years between us. Thank you for the comment.
@mirandamae13 I have a new and longer version of this video with the "If I Loved You" scene, viewable on my channel titled "Carousel, If I Loved You and More". Thanks for your very nice comment.
I'm in my 40's and certainly consider myself as the 'hardman' man of my era. I watched this film as a young boy and have to admit to crying when hearing this song. SSShhhhhh, don't tell anyone; especially those scouse gits. Liverpudlians for all you non-english folks.
I don't want to sound awful, but I prefer it how in the stage version he kills himself. It shows he truly loved her and didn't want her to live in either poverty or shame. Anyone else? However this moment is still very poignant and brings me to tears every time. This films has such a lovely score, one of the best.
@Eruadhiel I agree. It was after all based on a dark play (Liliom). But it was filmed in 1956 - the subject of death was groundbreaking enough for a Broadway musical movie, let alone suicide. Carousel has one of the loveliest scores among the R&H musicals, but ironically the least known. Thanks for the comment.
@romympanlilio "The least known?" With songs like this one, and If I Loved You and June is Bustin' Out All Over and Soliloquy and When I Marry Mr. Snow...songs that will be sung as long as there is music...I think not.
@shle42 O I was thinking more of the music being associated with a musical and the musical itself. This song is a perfect example and the songs you mentioned. They are songs everyody knows and loves but not many people would trace their Broadway origin to a play called Carousel. Think Oklahoma and The King and I. Thanks for the comment.
Thanks, romympanlilio, for posting this with both scenes as well as your helpful notes. Though this music is heard at many high school graduations, I didn't make the connection to the graduation in this musical until I read your comments.
You'll never walk alone was sang at the NY AIDS walk and was amazingly done. While I believe 75% or more are not familiar with Carousel it did not matter, because the message that were were trying to send was that people living with AIDS should and never will walk alone. This is an amazingly touching song and from an incredible musical.
@beadlepedder9 There's something about music, especially this music, that makes it such a powerful memory trigger. Bless your mum's soul. Thank you for the comment.
I had to sing "Mr. Snow" for my private voice lessons at my last college. I hadn't seen the musical before, and watched it, and loved it. I'm really glad I found this though, because I'm writing a paper on Richard Rodgers and I couldn't find this song online, then presto! I found this.
I have loved the music of Carousel all my life its Incredible !

I must be honest the idea of the film is good but some parts were a little dull, this song is amazing though and does make the film worth watching!

That was great and wonderful. Loved how you tied it all together.
Two of the greatest singers ever and still living. Shirley Jones and Claremae Turner.
Not to mention, that this is such a great song. I really hoped that it would be on Susan Boyle's CD. Hope it makes it onto the next Boyle CD.

@romympanlilio Yep, these songs will live on long after we are gone.
There is a reason they are called "classics". They just keep on finding new audiences because they speak to all generations.
