They destroyed it because maintaining a stadium of that size requires a lot of time and money, both of which the city of Irving really didn't have. The Dallas metro area has the new Cowboys Stadium, the Cotton Bowl, and several others that can be used to host events; what good is one more when the land could be used for something else? May not be popular, but it's reasonable.
