This has nothing to do with the abilities of single moms. It has everything to do with the importance of fathers in a child's life

It's not fair to assume that there will be an "absence of a positive male role model" in that childs life after Jones dies. The mother is very young... she could remarry, have relatives help influence the child like uncles, etc.

Step back and look at those examples. If someone gets a mortgage with his wife and skips town, he is still "able" to take care of that responsibility, but is choosing not to. In Jones's case, he will be dead... he couldn't help even if he wanted to.
Step back and look at this situation. Unlike applying for a mortgage, this probably wasn't planned (I may be wrong). If it was, the mother knew what she was getting into, if it wasn't then you have to make the best of it.
The fact that he can't take care of his responsibility because he's dead does not excuse knowingly taking on a responsibility he never intends to meet.

I think you missed Cenk's point. The reason the teen-dad example isn't the same is because the old guy is going to die soon... he is on his way out. A teen-dad has his whole life ahead of him and will be alive for the most part of the kids life.
I guess the difference is that he wouldn't be leaving the kid because he is irresponsible... he would be leaving the kid because he will be dead.
My father is kind of in the same boat, he is 50 and just had a kid with a 32 yr old.

Your examples are so extreme... let's try and put things back into a more realistic scenario.
A teen deadbeat father is much worse than Jones. Like you said, a deadbeat father has no intention of being a father for the kid, but you can't say the same thing about a man who can't help to die. A deadbeat teen is escaping responsibility to live a different life, be it to get other "bitches" or whatever. A man dying, doesn't have a choice... he isn't leaving because he doesn't want to be a dad.

In Jones's case, the child will be raised by his mother... so I guess to use your example the "debt" would continue to be paid.
Now your arguement may be the quality of "payment" may not be the same. But I know plenty of women who are single parents and they make it work.... and yes money 100% helps.

pudgimelon, I think the overall message you are missing is that no one is saying that Jones's situation is ideal, but it isn't horrible either.
It's not fair to assume that there will be an "absence of a positive male role model" in that childs life after Jones dies. The mother is very young... she could remarry, have relatives help influence the child like uncles, etc.
You're just seeing this as a very "half empty" kind of situation, vs others who are seeing it "half full".

Money does help. That isn't even a debate... be it for food, shelter, school, day care,... money helps every parent. You seem to translate help into an "exact substitution", which no one claimed. It helps parents give their children a better life.

Step back and look at those examples. If someone gets a mortgage with his wife and skips town, he is still "able" to take care of that responsibility, but is choosing not to. In Jones's case, he will be dead... he couldn't help even if he wanted to.
Step back and look at this situation. Unlike applying for a mortgage, this probably wasn't planned (I may be wrong). If it was, the mother knew what she was getting into, if it wasn't then you have to make the best of it.

The fact that he can't take care of his responsibility because he's dead does not excuse knowingly taking on a responsibility he never intends to meet.
As for whether or not its planned, I'd expect a teenager to get his girlfriend "in trouble", but at his age? Come on. There's no excuse for it. Heck, he probably should have gotten a vasectemy as soon as he found out he had terminal cancer, just to prevent this kind of "accident".

Why can't "getting the most out of life" be living with and loving your partner for life, growing old together, going through all the ups and downs, and making it out the other side.
