He's a German Shepherd - Belgian Malinois mix. There are a lot of mixes that may look Malinois-like, but most are a Shepherd/Lab mix. I happened to know this dog's parents and can verify his lineage. What's telling of a potential Malinois mix is their behaviour. Usually ball-obsessed and super-high energy level.

The switching of sides here was the first thing that I noticed too pattysue. Consistency is critical. Repetition is critical. In short order, you will have a willing student who understands the request being asked.
@GetRhythm2011 The purpose of showing this puppy how to walk on both sides is an advanced concept that most trainers do not teach their dog. Personally I teach my dog to walk on both the traditional left-side as well as the right side and even between my legs. At this age the goal in training a puppy is not to have him learn a certain skill, but rather to learn how to learn.
It sounds like your dog has a lot of energy! Tail chasing is considered a displacement behaviour. They do it because they need to direct their energy somewhere, but don't know where to direct it.
Dog's ignore us because we're either not being interesting enough to them or there's something more interesting elsewhere (i.e. they're distracted). Sounds like your dog needs some training and exercise. Playing fetch on a long leash is a great way to exercise an untrained dog.
