The reason the economy got "fucked up" as you so elequently stated is due to a bill that Bill Clinton passed for housing reform. It made it so people who couldn't afford houses could still buy them knowing that they would be forclosed on and repossesd. This caused a housing market bubble and when it popped at the end of Bush's second term he caught the blame. you should read up instead of listening to the uneducated.

Unemployment continues to go up due to the fact that companies don't lay off everyone at once. They are regulations how many employees they can lay off at a time. Also, companies lay off people over a period of time for various reasons such as winding down or disruptions to the business. People that are laid off last month were already slated to be laid off several months ago.
