I don't know what horn he's using but I have a Kanstul in the key of G and it sounds awesome. He's pushing it too hard. When you use the horn to it's fullest it produces the nicest, richest tones. BUT tone quality is hard to hold on these, just practice producing the full rich notes. No pinching.
@jus1gear I think he said "Played on a Yamaha Bb french horn". Hard to push hard. But you're right, there's nothing like a chrome plated valve and rotor mellophone in the key of G with a big fat mouthpiece to crank out some major tune.
As a mellophone plater/ French horn palyer, I refuse to be compared to a trumpet. Mellophones and F horn are very simliar. You can use mellophone fingerings on an F horn, all you have to do is use trigger and the mellophone fingering. But in my opinion the mellophone sounds a lot nastier than concert horn. I don't like the sound of a mellophone. French horn is better.
there is nothing the same at all between a mellophone and a french horn. they are totally different instruments. its actually closer to a trumpet than a horn
Ummm...no. You're probably thinking of a frumpet, which is a bastard instrument conceived in the fiery pits of hades. Modern mellophones (technically named mellophonium) are played in the same key and range as an F Horn. Only similarities to a trumpet are the fingerings (which doesn't say much, 'cuz it's basically the same as any piston-valved brass) and the fact that it's bell-front (again, doesn't say much).
Rofl... it's a marching french horn. It does suck. Anyone who tries to say different is wrong. That high note is a combination of a lot of pressure and squeezing (bad technique).

youre a fucking fag a marching mellophone is basically a longer trumpet with a larger bell flare, the marching french horn is a marching version of the french horn duh, and yes there are non marching french horns
a good effort. i marched madison in '88, and 2points about that amazing solo - 1st he was 17 at the time, 2nd he would sometimes suprise us at competition and play the entire solo up one octave!
Well- you're close... that was actually his age out year so he turned 21 during the season, but he was still an amazing player. I marched that year too and Kent was my best friend at the time- we went to high school together.
I really need to get up a vid of me playing Sigrfrieds Horn Call on mello on here then.
But as for the video nice job dude =]
Nice to hear other screamers =]
And playing a ton of pedal tones and just getting faster and faster at your scales does wonders to your chops. No lie. It brings tons of clarity to the higher registers.

The G bugle mellophones were the same as the sopranos except for the flared bell. From what I've heard, those things were VERY free blowing, and going into the upper register wouldn't have been hard at all.
@Therealrealbenji Late reply here - but yeah, from what I can tell you're hitting a D on an F horn (concert Ab) which would be a normal C on a G horn and one whole step is a big difference when you get up there. Kudos for trying this out, makes me wish I still had a horn to try it on myself.
I've been trying this solo for a while, I may post a video response if I am able to do anything comparable. The original solo has crazy bent pitches, the soloist must have had a more accomodating instrument/mouthpiece. Or he was actually switching valves, idk.

The only difference between a trumpet and a mellophone is the key, bore, and bell size. Playing the mello is nothing like playing the horn.

OP, you're using a trumpet or mellophone mouthpiece, right? Can you compare playing on a concert horn MP with a marching MP?
