If there was no Bret Hart, or no incident in Montreal in 1997, the Montreal crowd would barely acknowledge Shawn's existence. And Shawn knew that then, and he knows it now. That's why he had to reference Bret Hart. He tried to cut a promo on Hulk Hogan and the fans barely gave a shit, so once again he had to steal Bret Hart's heat. It's pretty pathetic.

Vince just didn't want to abide by that - he wanted to do it his way. As for Shawn, he's one of the greats, as is Bret. Shawn did what he had to do at Survivor Series, but the whole thing with him being "Montreal's Daddy" goes back to that incident - that's where Shawn gets his heat, and he knows it.
