Probably the best sounding circuit bend I've heard on one of these, and to think you only really used a paperclip... Good lord, I must applaud you for it.
Can someone tell me what the point here is. I see these circuit bending videos all over the place but don't understand why it's done. Is this part of some acid trip these people are taking?
they're from the SR-16. the MC-303 is just generating midi data. They're not stock SR-16 sounds, i programmed my own sample ROMs, but that's another story! =]
Well, this is a ROM hack. It's half-assed and ass-backwards to do it this way. =] But there are plenty of more modern machines that will let you use your own samples easily- via usb or a media card. Do a search for "sampling drum machine."
Well, not mains power. The AC adaptor converts the 120V AC into 12V AC. There is a SLIGHT chance of something melting inside the AC adaptor, and sending mains voltage into the HR-16. But i think i'd smell burning plastic before that happened. Plus, i'm sticking to ONLY the 2 sound chips, which i've researched, and i know exactly how much voltage goes thru them.
so the pads control the mc303 which controls the sr16? the sounds are from the sr16 right? what do you mean by arpeggio patterns? sorry for all the questions, i'm new at this... i'd like to say thanks for your website though, helped me a ton while bending my 505
Yes and Yes. The MC303 has arpeggios, which are basically chords, but the notes are played one after another instead of all at once. Instead of playing musical notes, i'm playing drum beats. So when i hold down BD, SD, HH, it cycles thru those 3 drums over and over.
Cool, send us a photo of your 505 if you haven't already. =]

~Thats impressive, atleast the sound of the drums are always cohesive instead of getting drowned out in distortion.

Brilliant! I'm looking for drum machines to bend since watching vids on youtube, but this is definitely the most inspiring and tasteful.

does the sr-16 have piezo triggers inside the unit for the buttons?
I want to pull one apart and make some nutty drumtar.
billm90 2 years ago
Well, yes and no. There are piezos inside, but they are only for sensing velocity. The drum buttons are your standard button matrix.

hey i gotta fix my sr 16 so can u record a video on how to take it apart cuz i haven't been able to
parejopinto 2 years ago
you have to pull the volume knob off before you can pull the 2 halves apart. Then just unscrew all the screws! =]

So if i stick a paperclip in my keyboard that I've just taken the back off...I won't get electrocuted?
DemstarAus 3 years ago
i think that you would have to complete the circuit to electrocute yourself, but don't take my word for it
dsilver010010 2 years ago
well, don't mess with anything plugged into the wall. Only battery powered stuff.
burnkit2600 2 years ago
Can't you still fuck up your heart rhythm a bit if you use an object with live batteries?
DDRpwnerer 2 years ago
You'd really have to try very hard to do that.

Nevermind. I just saw a video about it and it's all clear to me now. Nerds need something to do too.

Normal music is boring. People like you are exactly why hipsters exsist. Circuit bending is electronic folk art and has been happening since the 60s.

@Pesterons Yeah, so this burnkit is showing us his cross stitch. Chill out.

so you can put your own sounds onto the SR-16? i'm planning to buy a drum machine so I just wanna know some basic info. thanks!

Is the alesis running from mains power via the DC Jack?
I wouldnt chance it myself lol!
