@mountdewaddict Huh, why the random comment. What has that got to do with this toy? Dont get me wrong I love the film....but whats it got to do with this lol
@xmat123x I had one of the first ones by Levitron. It worked really great. The "inventers" stole it from the real inventer. He showed them his little invention and then refused to give them a license or allow them to use his idea. So they just went home and copied his design. It's very simple concept.
I got something like this from "Spencers Gifts" here in Calif. years ago. I think you might find something like this at Sharper image, etc. It is a magnet, the wedges you see at the base are to balance out the surface.....
The principle of levitating one spinning magnet over another, larger, stationary magnet was first discovered in the 1970s by Roy Harrigan, a Vermont inventor. The original patent for the levitating top that became the Levitron was in 1983 by Roy Harrigan, a Vermont inventor. His invention was utilized without his consent by the makers of the Levitron.
what's happening is magnetism mixed with a gyroscope. The bottom of the The base is a magnet and so is the Toy. The bottom of the toy is the same pole as the top of the base. This causes the objects to push away from eachother. The toy is lighter so it floats. The spinning motion causes a gyroscope that resists the efforts of the toy to just flip over and allign itself with the base. it's just simple magnetism and Gyroscopes. I totally want one though.

I think that there are just some tiny little magnets on each end of it and an electrical field is somewhere near, so it looks like its floating in mid-air.
While yes Magnetics would have impressed ppl in the middle ages we're a bit beyond that now so show me something I can't understand or something that will turn my world upside down =P
Whats the name of the product, any reply is appreciated.

Its levitation if it uses electromagnetism. Its anti-gravity when you've broken the flow of gravity itself, so that it no longer affects the object.

ya magnets. not anti gravity.

If the base isn't powered by an electromagnet, it's going to lose it's charge after a few days, yet it's awesome and I want one. :D

Got this from a Royal Show in Australia. It would be good if they can improve it by perhaps making a bigger version of it?
It can then last longer because the air resistance wouldn't slow it down as much.
JargonDragon 2 years ago
You can also get one similar in the US. Its called The Levitron. Ive had one for about 12 years. Pretty cool device.
