  • Thanks once again Bri! This is the best DMX controller video(s) on YT. My DMX headache has started to go away!

  • what make par 36 lights are they?

  • Very Helpful! just got my Obey 10 controller, hopefully most of the same applies on it.

  • Great informative video, many thanks for sharing !

  • hey thanks for this video tutorial. hey i got a new dmx operator pro, the left is the mobile and the right par 64 led (4) I can't control each par64 led. the par is in 16 ch each. i do somethin rong, can you help me, thanks

  • Hi I am having a serious problem with my dmx controller. Do I need to put some sort of a resistor on the last light? Im pulling my hair out trying to get it working but my dmx controller doesn't seem to recognise my lights. I am using slightly similar lights that you have there. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

  • Once you get it DMX is the easier thing in the world!!

  • Thats y u use computer DMX its easier but using a controller is much more fun thanks man u have helped me :)

  • hey thats the same controller i have, and i learned how to use it from u. thanks so much.

  • Brian, I'm a LONG TIME DJ. I need to know if there is a way to serato without the hardware for it.

  • thank you soooo much! legend

  • nice, but I seem to like the old par cans better because they give more of a disco

    look. led is great too!!!

  • nice man ur not badd at it i learned alot thanks!

  • brian, your a legend!

  • this is the most tedious of "powerful"technology. Give me a button called "blue", "red", "chase", "strobe", "blackout. A button called "elektras" a button called MEGABARS, a button called "movers" Who the frig has time to screw around for an hour to set up par cans to (wow) chase, for god sakes. what a pita dmx is.

  • Lets say I would need 24 par cans in a gig, how many channels will i use up in the dmx controller?

  • @GGchua (24*16)+1=385

    They will be named: 1, 17, 33, 49, 65, 81, 97, 113, 129, 145, 161, 177, 193, 209, 225, 241, 257, 273, 289, 305, 321, 337, 353, 369 and 385

  • Im new to DMX how does it work out with programing a moving head light? im thinking about buying the Obey 40 what do u think?

  • "...cause I kinda suck at this"

Nah it was great, thanks a lot. Seems like a lot of people are taking the crash course to lighting. More power to 'em!

  • Very nice video, I'm just starting to learn lights (I'm a sound man) - one question: How are the faders for each fixture assigned? Wouldn't you want the main dimmer for the fixture to be fader number one? Is that not being used or did you set it up that way on purpose? How/where do I find out the default(?) fader assignments (if they exist) per fixture and how do I edit those?

  • The faders are just in the order that the manufacturer of the light choosed them to be. To my knowledge, there is no picking and choosing what fader does what

  • @briansredd @jh4124 When working with dmx, understand that eachj mnufacturer uses something different for each channel. Once you know which channel does what, you're set. Als, using the A or X fader you can dim EVERY channel.

  • @jh4124 Don't buy that board. We have used it for some time for out giant par cans, it's been good to me, but it just doesn't have enough bang. The Elation DMX Operator Pro is so much better.

  • BEST VIDEO EVER!! I am a college student that produces many events on campus and we just got 5 American DJ PAR 64 LED DMX Lights. This video helped me program them! I agree, it is hard at first but when you get the hang of it it is easy!!!

  • u say u pretty green at dmx lighting but u just when straight to the point and actually showed what i was looking for cause well im a newbie trying to go big and just spend 2000 and never ever had touch a dmx controller but is cool cause thanks to u know i know what to do

  • Thanks man, you just tought me about DMX in 15 minutes!

  • hi brian wel furst i know i am late but merry X-mess i purchased a new dmx table but i dont know how to make scenes with my acme dynamo scan can you help me with it pleas ps i have only one scaner

  • "This is like zero seconds... this is like 10 minutes! Which is ridiculous!" hahaha.

    Great video :)

  • i dont have that record button on my DMX board

    help me?

  • Hi Brain, when you are happy with a scene you like and you take all the steps. How do you save that bank and move onto another bank to create another show.. I just got the same controller and I can't seem to go to the next bank. Hope you can help Thanks!

  • could you do a video showing how to program scanners and how to transpose between scenes

  • thank you so much. you've finally helped me figure out dmx lighting. thank you so much.

  • Thanks for the video!

  • it was awsome where would you buy lights for low prices

  • briansredd ... Read this carefully: Thanks to you after many months on looking for how dmx programing looks like i found it! I love the vid. i am looking forward to see more! 5/5

  • can i adress 2 LED par to the same number on DMX

  • Yup, you can address several the same addy if you want

  • This video was so helpful! Ok one question. Can you adjust the sound sensetivity on the Music Run device? Thanks Again!!!

  • hmm I don't think so on the Operator 192. It's been a while sense I've used it, though

  • wasn't so bad

  • can you delete a scene

  • Yeah, you can program right over the top of it if you want

  • i think if you click whatever you want to delete/replace again, you can

  • do i always have to make 8 scenes or can i save a bank with less scenes?

  • You should be able to do as few as you'd like. I haven't programed this unit for a while. You can do more than 8 so it stands to reason that you can do less than 8 as well

  • is there any programs for mac

  • i have the same controller what are the channels that cover each fixture button i mean 1 is channels 1-? 2 is channels ?-? can you tell me

  • You should watch the first video in this series. look at the first video response.

  • why is the first slider not in use??? Also why do you asign each slider to a coror ,or is it manufatured with a certain color, and is so how do you do that?

  • On these lights, Chauvet made them 5 channel as an upgrade. Channel 1 is labled "Future Application" so it dosen't do anything as of yet.

  • you need to watch the first video in this series. You can make these LED lights any color you want with the DMX controller.

  • i was wondering how bright those lights are are they the same output as a 250 watt bulb or lower output thanks alot your videos are great

  • To Brian my LED PAR tutor:

Excellent lessons! You speak the way I learn. One step at a time. Text books assume knowledge not in evidence. So far, I am a one channel, one "gel" color per instrument theatre electrician. You helped me learn some fun current technology. Thank you.

  • Hello I just wanna ask you if is possible to program scanners like martin MX1 with the control on your video and if is possible could you show as how? by the way your video on the led par cans helped me a lot thank you for that.

  • As long as it's DMX, it IS possible :)

  • Now, as to why you're fader 1 does nothing in controlling those lights, I'm not sure. But here's my guess (I'll confirm this when my controller comes). Right now you have your 10 pin always in the on position, thus the units are in Slave mode. What you want is them to be in Master mode.

  • Brain, these Chauvet lights have 4 channels (blackout/dim/strobe, R, B, G), so why are you controlling them with faders 2,3,4,5 and not faders 1,2,3,4? Does that have something to do with how you addressed these lights? i.e. Instead of addressing Light 1 as 1, you addressed it as 2, thus pushing back the four channels to 2,3,4,5.

  • You have the book, right? It tells you right in the book that's how it works. Not sure why fader 1 isn't doing anything. The lights are addressed as fixtures 1, 2, 3, 4 but occupy several channels per fixture. 16 I think, but you don't use all 16 channels. I don't pretend to understand all of this, but that's how you do it. Strange, eh?

  • Hey Brian. I'm a engineer by training, so this DMX isn't all the much of a foreign language for me. Ok, here's my take on what's going on. The DMX Op. 192 is a 16 channel operator, so that each fixture button has the capacity for 16 channels (as opposed to 4, 8, 24, etc.). You're LED lights are four channels each. So in theroy, you could run all four of your Par83s with just one fixture button by addressing them as 1, 5, 9, and 13.

  • Faders 1-4, 5-8, 9-12, and 13-16 would cover LED Par Cans 1 to 4 respectively. So calling them "fixture" buttons is sort of a misrepresentation of what those buttons do. For instance, if you had 12 Par83s, and didn't know that much about DMX, you would be using all your fixture buttons and have maxed out the board.

  • Turn off 10 and turn on pin 9 instead. Now all the LEDs will work independently of each other. I know thats what they were doing before, but thats because you hadn't assigned a master. Try that, then address your lights 1, 17, etc. and you should get control over them wtih faders 1-4.

  • I'll try to follow your expaination tomorrow. J will be here & we will be putting a new light show together.

  • Alright, you for sure have a better handle than I do on all this. I think it's time for you to fire up the camera and do a video on the subject :) I'm not sure my brain is big enough for this. HA!

  • can you do a video when you program a scanner or a moving head shuld help me very much.

  • It's the same concept. You put the head in one position in one "picture" and another position in the next. In the next 2 weeks there should be a few more DMX videos.

  • I don't own the controller yet, its my next purchase. I want the Elation DMX Operator, but I will go with the 192 if it has a line in (even though I wouldn't need the joystick).

  • hmm they sure look like mine. Probably a knock-off. Centerstage are good people with great customer service, so I wouldn't freak about picking something like that up from them. Tell them Brian the DJ Tutor says HI! HA!

  • Awesome Brian. I'm going to make the purchase for the 8 pack ($360) and have some fun once the controller comes in. I have a 10' Truss, my plan is to put the LEDs in the middle of the truss across the front pointing straight out and have them chase and strobe over the dance floor. I will have a ADJ Dual Gem in the middle soon too. I also have 8 Par 38s, I'm keeping those for the back of the truss to light the stage. Once its all assembled, I'll post a video. Thanks for your help.

  • Brain! Just got my 8 pack of Par 36 LED cans. Remember the "knock off"s from Centerstage Lighting that listed at $360 for the 8. Well they were just shipped and they come in a Chauvet box. Haha, they aren't knock offs, just much cheaper then those listed on Musiciansfriend. I'll do a video once the controller comes in. I also am controlling the controller with a Midi foot pedal, so my vid will be more from a cover band standpoint than a DJ.

  • Exellent! Centerstage ships fast, eh?

  • I know you have the Chauvet Color Splash Jr., but Centerstage Lighting makes the C-510 LED Can Jr. which are identical spec wise, but are much cheaper. I'm just hesitant because I'm wondering if they are a lesser quality.

  • Who makes it? Centerstage is a distributor I know, but do you know what brand the lights are? I know ADJ makes some slick little par 36 LED cans as well. Yeah go with the 192 if you want the audio in. It's a single RCA inlet. I suppose somehow you would just run the kick drum off the mixer into the operator 192.

  • Under the brand title it says "Centerstage". Check it out on Centerstagelighting dot com The unit is the C-510 LED Can Jr. and it goes for $49.99, where as the Chauvet Color Splash Jr. goes for $79.99 on Musician's Friend. I will probably go with the 192 since I can take an output from the board that only has the kick coming through it and use that.

  • Brian, would you be interested in doing a demo of the sound activation capibilities of the DMX Operator. This controller is my next purchase, but I am using it in a band setting and I would love to use the sound activation since our sets are not predetermined.

  • Understand. Basically all you would need to do is program the patterns you like, then push the MIC button. It'll then chase the patterns to the music. You would still be able to adjust the fade & speed time on the fly if you wish. I'll see what I can do about demoing this for ya in a vid :)

  • Sweet man, I'm really interested in just how sensitive the mic is and if there is any sensitivity adjustment. Ideally, I could isolate just the kick and snare mics for the audio trigger, but I can't seem to find an audio line in on the unit. The problem with that is I don't want the lights to chase between songs when I'm talking to the crowd.

  • Also, is there any difference between your Chauvet LED cans and the ones sold by Centerstage Lighting? Other than the fact that the Centerstage Lighting ones are $30 cheaper? If not, then I'm picking up a set of 8 for $360.

  • Mine are the Color Splash Jr. Which Operator do you have? Do you have the 192 or the standard operator? I don't think the standard has an audio line in. Otherwise, you could isolate the sound per the kick drum if you had it mic'd up.

  • The sensitivity adjustment would be done via the time & fade faders.

  • WOW! For being a beginner, you are pretty good, you actually taught me more than GroovinDJ did and I watched his video first and got so confused.Than you so much!

  • great video! helped me out alot... im new to this too even.. only thing is i got 8 moving heads.. Thanks again!

    TM

  • what controler are you using?

  • That's the Elation Operator 192

  • Thanks Brian. I have just ordered two LED PARS to go with my existing controller, and when they arrive I will definetly be using this vid to help me set them up.

  • Hi,

Thanks, these videos really helped me learn about dmx. i cant wait to post my videos programs!

    Thanks again

    Adam

  • wot does the joystick do? is that for when u have movers?

  • You can use it to control a moving head DMX light

  • What controller did you purchase? With so many controllers out there, are they pretty much the same and would you recommend the joystick? You are doing a GREAT job? Got the intel lights..just feel overwhelmed with the directions. Video helps ALOT!

  • That's the Elation Operator 192. You can save yourself some money and get a regular operator w/o the joystick (I haven't used the joy stick function yet).

  • wher can i get a set of 8 lights like that

  • You buy them individualy. Check out center stage lighting online. THey seem to have very competitive prices

  • Excellent couple of vids Brian. Thanks, I find this kind of stuff really interesting. Hope you keep makin more good vids on lighting.

  • Brian could you do a lesson on programming your scanners with that DMX controller.

  • great teacher nice ... your realy great at it keep it up...can u give a lesson on scanners, moving heads, and how can i copy 1 fixture to another and try a reverse on it...let say a left and right moving head same scene on bought...how can i reverse the movement of 1 fixture??? many many thanks...

  • hello Brian..Thanks for the video! Now I know how to get start on it!

One question:What are the Chasers button used for?

    Thanks.

    Zal.

  • You can actually acces your chases by programing them into thoes button bays. I haven't messed with that feature too much but it's probibly the best way to access what you program.

  • hey just woundren if u know, if i done this wit scanners and had them focused on a sertan place etc. center stage, stage left, stage right, wen i save the scene, would th light go bak 2 that sertan place/position? thanx

  • Yeah it sure would just as long as you save your scenes. Speaking of scanners, there is even a joystick function on that controler that you can use to control a Scaner as a spotlight if you want.

  • technology these days is amazing!i hav not quite bot the scanners but i am hoping 2 get from th big fat red man in december(please note i am joking)but i do hope 2 buy within th new year.thanx 4 your help, Mike

  • Anytime, Mike. If I can ever be of assistance, please let me know!

  • You did a great job Bri. I know a lot of people will be taking your tips and putting them to good use.

  • wow that was alot of help thx man

  • don't put yourself down, your doing great, just showing this and preparing your video to educate us dummies... Thanks again!

  • HEY BRIAN YOU THINK YOU CAN LEARN TO HOOK UP YOUR INTIMIDATOR'S AND LEARN HOW TO PROGRAM SCANNERS NEXT?! THEN TEACH ME! lol....i got the same scanners and want to get into programming.

  • It's basicaly the same thing. The only difference is that the faders control different functions. Use that dip switch calculator I link up in the discription to name your fixtures (1 & 2), hook them all up with your DMX cables and enjoy!

  • Now i understand what my dmx controller doze

  • Hey Brian do you know how to use the joystic on the conntroller because you could controle your intimidators with controller and joystic for pan and tilt

  • Mate thats the best 7 minute instructional video i have seen, thankyou so much for your time, look forward to setting mine up now.

  • PERFECT!! thanx alot

  • Hey Brian!About your sampling origins, I just discovered something you could add in your show: Jay Z- It's allright!the whole song is "badly" sampled from Talking Heads "Once in a life time"!!!;-)

  • awesome

  • hardcore.

    I'm buying those today.

  • While I don't think I'll ever use a dmx controller, that was really cool!

  • Great... More money I gotta save up... Doh!

  • Brain, you don't suck! That was good.
