On the audio commentary of Head, The Monkees are actually jumping up and down on a trampoline to get the effect of them flying in the air after supposibly jumping off of the bridge.

I remember seeing Head for the first time in the 80's and the whole audience went nuts when Peter jumps in and the tight shot of his face. No wonder when you meet peter now days he's so mean and pissed at the world. He hates me and basically told me off.
