  • Nice game. Where can I download it?

  • so you don't want to create a mess in real world, you create a mess in virtual world.... genius.

  • This is an OCD Nightmare!

  • I would rather die in a fire then have to work with my files in this way.

  • Why add the limits of our physical world to organizing our virtual information? This isn't just stupid, it's regressive. How does making documents bump into each other help us organize the information? How is tilting documents in a pile more efficient than labeling a folder? This is skeuomorphic eyecandy. I don't want my computer's desktop to be as messy as my real desk.

  • you do realize that your idea is sound but no one listens long enough.

  • Looks cool but isn't it an eg of Anti pattern where u r trying to do the opposite of what computers were design to do "Organize". Just bcoz we could do it doesn't necessarily mean we should do it.

  • lol? no "real" physics in games but physics on desktop?!

this is pretty useless, maby its fun, but useless

  • The File Folder has yet to be topped for ease of use and organization. Perhaps all this eye-candy is distracting us from doing important things?

  • I've used this...This was totally useless to me. I used it for a month and got bored. Somethings are best left as they are.

  • YES! now the mess on my physical desktop can be perfectly translated to my pc

  • Looks nice. I can imagine how hard it was to program.

  • they have this. its called bumptop... my sister has this. bumptop is just a tiny bit different

  • i think its a kinda game

  • It's only one aspect of what's needed in GUIs but greatly explained!

  • useless garbage

  • What a messy Desktop!!!

I get dizzy only by looking at all the mess.

this is to complex and akward for power users that use interface in a time saving way.

the browsing trough piled icons is to slow and akwared compared to when all the icons are spread infront of you.

this is made for having fun with realistick graphics not for usabilty and user friendly interface.

  • Just dont have so many apps open! Simple!

  • neat :D

  • poor pdf files, tossed in a corner, unnable to open in any editing software

    "just delete me now!"

  • People have computers so that they don't have to deal with this stuff.

  • If this is the future, the future is bleak. All I see is aesthetics over action, visual over vork.

  • And a new one! Prettiness over purpose!

  • @Kookas

    - this feature might make more sense with touch displays/net-tablets for casual users perhaps

  • it's rather old already. I have already seen it four years ago, and, as others said before, it is pretty useless

  • Pointless. The GUI should allow less time looking for and organising files and more time using them.

  • this is nice but how i know the name of the each document? i can only see icons...

  • This is like gmod or something, doesn't make sense to use this in PC or phone, only where it would be good is some giant touch table like Microsoft Surface.

  • sweet

  • wow

  • Why would I want a pile of virtual docs to organise?

  • It's google BumpTop and can be downloaded for free from google. It is rubbish but free.

  • This would be great.

  • this is horrible! I don't see how this helps.

  • it is bumptop!

  • wow i can have a mess on my computer too, at last.

  • It looks interesting, but the problem is you have to work just with the icons. That's not enough for most documents. It could be enough for stuff like pictures, though. I can see this as a very nice interface for organizing photos on the iPad, for instance.

  • Useless

  • the only thing about this vid that was annoying as hell was the fact that ya keep saying "Lasoo"...its Lasso. Just like it looks.

  • that would use up like half of your ram with the physics and interactions...

  • Nice knukleduster!

  • its called bumptop. i am using it now

  • its called bumtop. i am using it now

  • looks like Real Desktop on roids.

  • It's visually impressive, but it just seems too troublesome. x.x It counts "mess" as organization.

  • Great way of introducing new users to computers. I hope this will be released as Free Software. That would be the only chance for it to evolve(as free software).

  • Is this a joke? This is a complete regress in user interface design. One of the great advantages of working digitally is that it is tidy and organized.

"In real work spaces, documents are piled and casually arranged in way that suddenly conveys information to the owner."

Ugh, no; that's called being a lay, untidy slob. That work space was a disheveled mess. How does that instantly convey information?

  • Ok, so its Garry's mod for your desktop? Cool. More wasted CPU cycles and stupid stuff to memorize. This isn't new or useful at all

  • wow making a mess virtually instead of on my desk!

  • What you guys fail to see is that this user interface could be some sort of "transition" between what we have today and the next which will be on 3D (in about 10-15 years, maybe).

The knowledge acquired developing and using this could be easily transferred to the future 3D interface.

That being said, the only thing that I think is missing on this interface is the name on each file.

  • I don't agree with the negative feedback. This is innovative technology. And yes, this is technology. I'm seeing plenty of unique gesture techniques, and little menus. It's nice. Yes, it doesn't help to have mess on your desktop, but you could have different compartments, each with your arranged stuff in it. Later when you come back to that compartment, you'll recognize what you did.

You could also make auto grids etc.

    It's cool.

  • @a1mint Mimicking a messy desktop is not an innovative technology. The purpose of a computer UI is to simplify menial tasks, this UI is a step in the wrong direction. It makes navigating your desktop laborious, not efficient.

Sure, it's cool to look at, but completely useless in real world application.

  • @eurisko67 I agree with your concise statement about reducing menial tasks. The emphasis should be on reducing user frustration.

  • why would anyone want this?

  • this is a rubbish interface.

  • it seems cool but if u think about it its really annoying....also this is why they created folders

  • Unfortunately the fundamental principle on which this is founded is wrong. That is, that the physical world is the best way to manage data like this. Consider if the World Wide Web was organized as a giant physical book and in order to follow links you had to flip to the appropriate page. Obviously that would be incredibly difficult and inefficient to use.

What that said, I can see an interface like this being useful in games and art design software.

  • Comment Microsoft réinvente le Bordel :D

Big mess reinvented on your desktop. This is not an invention but a true regression !

  • is it on sale XP¿?

  • seems like it just makes it more complicated to click on something

  • how do you know what pdf you want to click on

  • It's 2010, what future u're talkin bout!.. come on!

start selling these amazing stuff to the society..

  • don't forget to wipe after leaving a tidy pile

    it could get messy

  • Looks cool, like a pure flash driven website.... While it looks cool, it would become very, very annoying. Again, looks great!

  • Bump Top ftw :D

  • it sounds interesting, but it doesn't sound very practical. how are you going to remember some movements in order to organize your 'virtual desktop'?

  • this could be good for tablets

  • While very cool... in what way does this really improve the 2D/Folder interface?

  • sexy!!

  • I hadn't realized that a messy, cluttered desk was the epitome of organization and easier to use than neat rows.

  • bumptop. good program for when i had a tablet pc. wish i hadn't lost the pen...

  • In the end a file system is all about access, quick and easy. This brings the journey full circle:

Stacks of documents in real life

2D Representations of documents in a computer

3D stacks of documents (as in real life) in a computer

The whole point of 2D was simplicity.

  • i had this program.....

  • i had this program

  • The lasso gestures are interesting. Piles are good. Fan-out is nice. Pie menus might actually be useful in this system. That said, my filename info is way more important usually than icon location info, so the windows and photos views are better than icon views for me. Sort by date and kind would be essential too.

  • Not practical.....at all....

  • Well, who does really need a physics in UI? It's funny but pretty useless. It probably consumes too much CPU power and RAM (so I think you should sell it to Microsoft :) ).

However, I want to use it in real life, because my desk is too messy and I'm too lazy to clean it normally.

  • I think the idea is very interesting, I would like to TRY it, but I think it could be very boring/time consuming after a while.

  • my left and right mouse is alot faster than this thing on window xp. it may look real but... useless.

  • certainly waste of computing power (and hence increasingly scarce energy) but nice toy/entertainment.

look how the useless desktop-cube was attracting people to linux.

  • @walter0bz Compiz was never useless. Many of it's plugins can really help with dealing with many windows. Take for example the Scale plugin aka Expo on Mac. It is one of the best ways to navigate through a lot of windows. Unlike window$ what has only one desktop...

  • @dennisonicc -

i mean the transition effect is wastefull - multiple desktops itself is *very* usefull.

Regarding the above feature - I guess it does make a bit more sense with multi-touch screens

  • @walter0bz The desktop cube may be mostly for show, but once you dig into Compiz there are dozens of genuinely useful desktop interactions, many of which I use, both at work and at home.

I think that any such technology can have its useful parts. Lots of people have desktops filled with icons, for example, I think they would appreciate something like this if it helps tidy them up a bit.

  • @wirespot

    >>" Lots of people have desktops filled with icons, for example, "

-thats why they invented folders :)

But in retrospec, apparently this UI would come into its own with *multitouch screens* (ipad etc).

Sometimes seemingly useless curiosities are solutions to a problem that hasn't appeared yet :)

  • @walter0bz The desktop-cube is not a useless feature. Definitely not useless like the one in this video. It allows for the easy organisation of multiple work environments.

  • @Kookas -

Multiple Desktops (usefull I agree) are available without the Desktop Cube. it is the desktop cube animation that is relatively less essential 'eye-candy' IMO. The zoomed out 'desktop wall' is much more usefull (see all side by side, & move windows between)

The plain switcher with simple rectangular map (available for many years on ancient hardware) works just fine too.

Maybe you first encountered the feature because you saw the fancy cube which caught your interest :)

  • @Kookas -

I do like multi desktops as it puts more ability in the winmanager available to all apps consistently. Unix philosophy is usually versatile framework combining many simpler tools.

However with windows dominating most programs solve the problem with their own internal multi-pane/tabbed setup.. perhaps linux look & feel gets caught in the middle between Windows & Mac conventions.

I like "Focus Follows Mouse" but also like mac style 'global menu' which it doesn't work well with

  • I consider this an alternative user interface but NOT the future.. because this technology allows us to keep our bad habits.

The objects should clean themselves up, and float around you in an organized manner. Disabling the user from forming bad habits, and behave in a manner where related items that have been used together before are all called into view immediately.

Still it's miles ahead of the garbage interfaces microsoft keeps feeding us.

  • This actually would be easier than what we have now for large multitouch screens. I dont think this should be considered a complete solution in and of itself, but its a concept that I think could be well utilized in conjunction with other new ideas to create a very practical operating system. Probably, Microsoft will create something cool but useless, and Mac will find a way to use these new concepts in the coolest and most effective manner.

  • Is already as freaking mess on my Office with lots of paper and books ..and mug . I really cant see my self using a desktop even more messy then my office .

    Nice but messy .

  • stop trying to go backwards! there are reasons an uncluttered desktop work well

  • useless piece of work

  • ... ... pretty useless

  • this is basically the Real Desktop program.

it looks cool and impresses noobs but having used Real Desktop its fairly impractical

  • useless

  • "new technology"? um... no, this is new software

  • it depends on what u define technology is.... windows vista or 7 or any windows... they r softwares ( Operating Systems) but they are still technologies....

  • I'm not disqualifying all software from being considered "technology" I'm saying this particular software is not

  • @ortzinator true its not a new technology...this by no means makes it any easier for people to do anything...although a new technology can be defined as a new organization or new technique...but this does not deserve to be a new technology..i can think up a better gui interface and sketch it down within 5 minutes..this seems like its made for people who are bored and want to throw files around a 3d desktop..ill stick with my windows 7 ui thanks

  • i befer my desktop as it is?

    or

I prfer my desktop as it is?

  • pretty cool

  • good in theory bad in practice. We already have piles on standard desktops...they're called folders....plus looking at icons tells you nothing about what your looking at

  • finally, someone with some common sense on youtube.

  • I just checked this out, I though it was fake, but it's real! Really nice. Tobad no linux support though. Plus its really laggy on older pc's, but thats to be expected.

  • If you have five Words documents on your desktop, how can you possibly recognize one from the others?

    I would say it's pointless.

  • damn the way this guy says lasso is SO fu***in annoying. but this is really cool.

  • where can i find this software?

  • here: bumptop (dot) com

it's pretty cool and they have a free version.

it doesn't take as much ram as you may think =D

  • This reminds me of Real Desktop, I have it on my Vista computer

  • Cool... But dont see the point of it. The whole point of windos is that it puts things in order and lists for you. This is like having a messy physical desktop that takes ages to clean up. Again cool to look at and go "wooo coool" but ultimatly pointless.

  • awesome !

  • Kinda reminds me of stacks and smart folders from apple.

Only this looks more like a gimmick, don`t think it will be efficiet

  • true....

  • try it, its really efficient, mainly the notes and the email, flickr, picasa, twitter and facebook stuff they built in

    bumptop (dot) com

  • Does it work on GNU+Linux? And if so, is it free as in price, or free as in freedom? ;-)

  • free as in zero cost..

wasn't it just easier to go check it out?

    here: bumptop(dot)com

  • Actually I did, and even though there is no license mentioned there, and it doesn't say if it's for GNU/Linux, the reason I asked is to get the point across.

  • oh, ok.. no they don't yet have a mac or linux version.. they have kind of a poll on the download page for people to ask for those versions, and if they have enough requests, they'll probably do it

  • They won't get them (votes). Not much people use GNU/Linux, and those who do wouldn't look twice on a proprietary piece of software (including me). So even though it would probably be easy to port it (OpenGL?), I wouldn't get my hopes up.

If it proved useful community would do a free (as in freedom) version anyway.

  • really impressive.....

  • i cant wait

  • loooooooooooooolllllllllll whats loosers 3d desktop is the program. only noobs are on youtube

  • it's a new " graphic user interface", it's not a program that u install to ur PC

  • So it's... nothing?

Nah, it's a prog alright. But the future of UI? Not this. This is just enhanced desktop.

  • try it.. it's free and not that resource expensive.. go to bumptop (dot) com

its cool to show off to your friends, as for real utility, i don't really know as i don't use it that often

  • what programs were used to accomplish this gooey?
