I was raised on classic movies all my life. Grew up being a very big Hitchcock fan & cinema buff. In High School back in 84, I took a cinema class at a arts park & made a short Hitchcock type film. When I went on to college I took a semester of cinema. Being a Director & Animator wasn't in my cards, However my prayer & fondest desire is that classic movies like this one last forever. They just don't make movies like this anymore. BRAVO to the whole cast & Director & Staff. God Bless.
Certainly one of my favorite Hitch films. I took a cinematography course in college that focused on Hitchcock films as the focus of master story telling. The professor disected the hundreds of subtleties and naunces that are nearly subliminal in Hitch's films. Initially, I thought the course would be just nit picking, but... truly made me appreciate the immense talent of this legendary director.
Thank you so much for uploading this one. Cary Grant is so sexy and handsome, great chemistry between the two! I must have watched this a hundred times by now.
@sandmd94 No... But he is also a man of his time. Men in general where assholes to women because society norms in those times teached that free spirit women where not supposed to be trustable nor good future wives and mothers. In fact in this movie, among others of his, Hitchcock seems he is trying to demystify that assumption.
@lunog Really? I thought (at least the way I understood it from the extras on the DVD) that Devlin was just giving Alicia a chance to change by herself. I mean in reality, another person can't really change somebody else. That person has to change themselves when it all comes down to it.
The most romantic, suspenseful movie ending ever. Bergman is ravishing, Grant is at his most masculine, and then there's that heart-stopping walk down the stairs. When Grant dooms Claude Rains by locking the car door on him, it's a stunning moment--I hate the little Nazi and pity him at the same time. Utterly brilliant, and I agree with RiddlingSphinx, there's not a second of celluloid wasted. Wow.
Hitchcock has a way for making you feel something about each character. There is not one character in any of his movies that you feel neutral about. That being said, Raines really got the short end of the stick...
the love scenes between cary and ingrid are amazing for 1946-and for today!!. absolutely natural, fresh, sincere...those two makes SUCH A COUPLE!!. Rains, who I adore as an actor, here is brilliant!!. Always in second row, only in CAESAR AND CLEOPATRA with Vivien Leigh he got a big part-and he certainly deserves!!.
@gwtwcarlos I heard about the scenes. There was a limit on the amount of time people could kiss in the movies...... To get around this, Hitchcock would put them an inch away from each other and let them sit there....in the end, this was so much more passionate.
I wish films still had climaxes like that. Unbearably tense due to empathy for the characters. The climax is allowed to happen inside your head, rather than ending with a pointless explosion or similar bullshit.
I have watched this movie so many times I've lost count. What a fantastic movie. I think it might overtake "Shadow of a Doubt" as my favorite Hitch film....
Very interesting interplay of human emotions on those stairs...Alex, torn between jealousy and wanting Alicia, and allegiance to his cause. Really good acting on Claude Rains' part.
After Rear Window, this is my favourite Hitchcock film. We don't get this kind of movies anymore. Where has this talent and intelligence gone? Such a shame...
Wow...this is insanely good to watch. Such a blend of danger and romance put together in one scene. This movie in 5 minutes has more emotion than 2 hours of anything coming out now. No wonder Hitchcock was so famous.
Wow...never thought I'd want to be poisoned and locked away in a nazi's mansion. But if the end result was being rescued by Cary Grant I'd definitely consider it. My favorite Hitchcock film of all time. Suspenseful, sexy, incredible cast - sheer brilliance. Thanks so much for sharing.
Such a fine movie. Cary Grant, Ingrid Bergman and Claude Rains at their best in an Alfred Hitchcock thriller. They don't make films like this any more? And how could they? Who among today's stars could replace either of those actors?
Great movie, fabulous chemistry between Bergman (one of the most beautiful women who ever graced the screen) and Grant..... having said that, am I the only one who felt a little sorry for Sebastian, I know he's the "bad guy" but still...
It was typically Hitch to put some "ambivalent" character's in his movies. Not really good , not really bad....but victim of the situation. Sebastian was the "bad guy " because his mother and companions.
If you ever want a laugh, watch Mission Impossible 2. They have almost the entire plot of Notorious there, and it's so melodramatic you'd think they were making a comedy.
OH,OH Alex..U R a cooked goose! When the "guys" offer to drive you some place, you ain't coming back! You will soon be taking the "long walk" and what will Mommie Dearest do then?
Such a classic ! Thanks for posting. Today such films have disappeared : in "modern movies" people talk with vulgarity and have so ugly clothes compared to the goden age of the cinema... Sad...The only good thing the "modern area" has brought is a technology(and not technology...) which allow us to watch these movies -and remenbering -or trying to do - the good old time with melancholy- with a beautiful quality of sound and image...
By the way, sorry for my bad English, I'm French...
Cary and Ingrid make such a wonderful couple. They make this movie so much worth watching. Edith Head did such a wonderful job in selecting Ingrids gowns and hats. She looked so beautiful in them. Ingrid just looks beautiful period. She is such a classy lady.
If this scene was any sexier I think I'd just melt away. And the ending of this movie is flawless. Great writing, great acting, great directing - this movie's an all around perfect 10. Thank you so much for uploading.
OMg....Read all the comments and just...wow. Took the words right out of my mouth. I LOVE THIS MOVIE! Cary Grant was so charming and devine. So was Ingrid Bergman. Lovely actors. Puts most of the actors today to shame!

I agree. Tour de force performances from everyone. Wonderful direction. Simply love the way the camera loves Cary and Ingrid, especially when they are snuggled near each other's faces. OMG, it makes you believe in love, even if you are the most cynical about love! Hitchcock could have filmed Cary and Ingrid playing Checkers the entire film runtime and Notorious still would have been more enjoyable to watch than 99.9% of the movies made today.
@RiddlingSphinx Absolutely right in every respect! it is probably one of THE most beautifully photographed black and white films!
