When I began to study the Koran, the holy book of Islam, I found many unreasonable ideas. The women in the Koran were treated as slaves. They are nothing but sexual objects. I looked around me and found religion oppressive in real life. They considered and treated women as chattel slaves. The limitation of the number of wives was fixed at the end of the eighth year of Hijrah and the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) had married all his wives before that period. He was commanded by Allah to keep those whom he had already married but was forbidden to marry any more.

@shikanja REASONS FOR THE MARRIAGES:The factors that prompted the Holy Prophet Muhammad pbuh to contract several marriages are being briefly discussed below:
1. An Ideal Model:The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) being the last and the Final Prophet 15 and "Mercy for the nations" was required to present to humanity an ideal and perfect model for all stages of human experience and moral test and for that very reason the Holy Quran calls him an "excellent exemplar."
Mankind learnt from him the best ways. As a husband he was kind, "He lived with one wife and with more than one, with the old and the young, with the widow and the divorcee, with the pleasant and the temperamental, with the renowned and the humble; but in all cases he was the pattern of kindness and consolation."

He gave to the world an ideal example of (i) a celibate life up to the age of twenty-five, (ii) a monogamous life with an old widow and (iii) finally a polygamous life after the age of fifty.

The Muslims were required to conform their social and personal behaviour to the teachings of Islam. The Holy Prophet himself meticulously observed the Quranic commands and regulations and solved difficult problems concerning Muslims' social and political life.

For this purpose the Holy Prophet required fully trained ladies. The ideal way to solve this problem was to personally train some ladies. 3. Preservation of the Holy Prophet's Private Life:
The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) was undoubtedly, the greatest teacher of mankind. He lived an exemplary life, which was a living commentary on the Holy Quran. "Nor does he speak out of desire. It is naught but revelation that is revealed."

It was possible for men to forget many things of his personal life on account of their constant conflict with the outside world but women (house-wives) cannot forget them. It was necessary, therefore, to marry with a number of women of different places and clans having varied tastes, habits and temperaments.

The wives of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) were required to serve as models of virtue to the Muslims and to teach them all that was "recited in the house, of the messages of Allah and the wisdom." 22 Thus they were required to remember and convey to the Muslims whatever the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) taught them at home.

He eliminated racial and national distinctions and prejudices and upheld piety as criterion of integrity and superiority. Divorced women were looked upon as inferior in status and were not allowed to remarry in pre-Islamic era. By marrying a divorced lady the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) taught that such a marriage is not only lawful but desirable to grant a divorced woman an honourable status in the society.

The Holy Prophet also married widowed women. This helped in solving the problem of providing care and protection to widows and their children in peace as well as in war when due to death of large number of male members, women were left with no one to support them.
@shikanja 8. Status of Freed Prisoners of War: efore the advent of our Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) the prisoners of war were taken as slaves. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) set an example by freeing them on ransom and on several occasions without charging any thing.
@shikanja They were encouraged and assisted to settle down through legal marriages, or earning money by working or even educating people. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) not only paid ransom for some and freed them but also married two of the captive women.
Some of the marriages were political in character. He was concerned for the future of Islam. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) was ever anxious to bind his followers belonging to different clans and tribes in mutual love and affection. That was, doubtlessly, the object in marrying Juwairiyah (may Allah be pleased with her), daughter of Haris, the Chief of Bani al-Mustaliq.
@shikanja The whole clan of that tribe and their allies were thus won over to Islam. It was through marriage with Safiyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the enmity of a section of Jewish Community was neutralised. Similarly by marrying Mariya the Copt, (may Allah be pleased with her) the Holy Prophet developed blood relations with a ruler of great magnitude.
The Holy Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, treated his wives with even kindness and affection. He gave to the mankind best possible example in respect of dealing with wives of different age groups having different temperaments and social status.

@shikanja So Dihya came with her and when the Prophet saw her, he said to Dihya, 'Take any slave girl other than her from the captives.' Anas added: The Prophet then manumitted her and married her." Thabit asked Anas, "O Abu Hamza! What did the Prophet pay her (as Mahr)?" He said, "Her self (i.e. freedom) was her Mahr (dower) for he manumitted her and then married her.
@shikanja Anas added, "While on the way, Um Sulaim dressed her for marriage (ceremony) and at night she sent her as a bride to the Prophet. So the Prophet was a bridegroom and he said, 'Whoever has anything (food) should bring it.' He spread out a leather sheet (for the food) and some brought dates and others cooking butter. So they prepared a dish of Hais (a kind of meal). And that was Walima (the marriage banquet) of Allah's Messenger (pbuh)." (Bukhari, Hadith 358)
@shikanja Was Sayyidah Safiya willing for the marriage?As to the question whether Sayyidah Safiya (RA) was willing for the marriage or not, no body’s conjecture but her own words can make things clear. The following narration explains in detail:
@shikanja When Safiya came to the Holy Prophet (pbuh), he said to her; ‘Among the Jews your father did not stop in his enmity towards me until Allah destroyed him.’ She said: ‘O Allah’s Messenger! Indeed Allah says in His book, ‘No one will take anyone else’s burden’. So the Holy Prophet (PBUH) said to her: ‘Make your choice, if you will chose Islam I’ll select you for myself and if you chose Judaism, I’ll set you free and send you to your people.’
@shikanja She said; ‘O Allah’s Messenger indeed I longed for Islam and testified for you even before you gave me this invitation when I came to you. I have no guardian among the Jews, neither father nor brother and I prefer Islam over disbelief. Allah and His Messenger are dear to me then freedom and to return to my people.” (Ibn Saad 8/123)
@shikanja About a Companion standing armed outside their camp and Sayyidah Safiya’s feelings:
unaware of such an affectionate talk between Holy Prophet (PBUH) and Sayyidah Safiya(RA) , one of the pious Companions, Sayyidina Abu Ayub (RA), stood armed outside their camp for the fear that Sayyidah Safiya, whose father and brother were killed in the battle, may try to harm the Prophet (pbuh) (Ibn Saad 8/126).
@shikanja Some Missionaries refer to this happening giving an impression as if Sayyidah Safiya (RA) was forced into marriage and was really unhappy. While the very conversation quoted above belies such a notion, it must also be known that Abu Ayub (RA) was standing there voluntarily and Holy Prophet (PBUH) had not made him to stand there as he knew the actual position of Sayyidah Safiya.
@shikanja The pious companion in his innocence didn’t know and the cunning polemicists in their evil designs run away from the fact that much before Holy Prophet (PBUH) reached Khyber the All-Wise, the Almighty had sown the seeds of the love of the Prophet in the heart of Sayyidah Safiya (RA).
@shikanja When Allah’s Messenger (pbuh) reached Khyber while Safiya was a bride at her place. She saw in her dream that a sun came into her lap. She mentioned it before her husband. He said; ‘By Allah you do not wish for anyone except the King who has come upon us.’ Allah’s Messenger conquered Khyber and her husband was killed. From that time (of dream) she loved that the Prophet (pbuh) may marry her. (Tabarani Kabeer, Hadith 19667)
@shikanja Taking together all the narrations above we come to know that Sayyidah Safiya (RA) had a feeling of affection for the Prophet (pbuh) before they met (Tabarani 19667). When her father and husband were killed in the battle she developed some feeling of hatred for the Prophet (PBUH) for natural reasons but when the Prophet (PBUH) explained to her what all her father did to him (Tabarani 19668)
@shikanja she realized that her father met such an end because of his own deeds (Ibn Saad 8/123) and so her ill feelings for the Prophet (PBUH) completely vanished and she was left with the feelings of love for the Prophet (pbuh) that the All-Wise and Almighty had put in her heart through a dream (Tabarani 19667 & 19668).
Truly unique and inscrutable are the ways of My Lord!

Islam believes a prophet can't lie. Mohammad said Jesus is a prophet. If Jesus is a prophet, then he's not guilty of lying. Yet, Jesus claimed to be God (John 10:30-33).
If Jesus did not lie, then Mohammad lied when he said that Jesus was a prophet and denied the deity of Jesus. If Jesus did lie about his deity, then Mohammed still lied for saying Jesus is a prophet since a prophet cannot lie.
Any way one looks at it, Mohammad is a liar and can't be a prophet according to Islam.

his magnanimity in victory, his simplicity, his wisdom in conceiving new solutions for problems which could not be solved by traditional methods, without affecting the fundamental concepts of Islam, surely all these are foundations which, correctly understood and sincerely interpreted, must enable us to conceive what should be a truly modern and dynamic Islamic Society in the years ahead. When I began to study the Koran, the holy book of Islam, I found many unreasonable ideas. The women in the Koran were treated as slaves. They are nothing but sexual objects. I looked around me and found religion oppressive in real life. They considered and treated women as chattel slaves. If Mohammed was truly a prophet, he would have set better examples. If Allah was a true god, he would know that Mohammed would be called a pedophile in the future. How could Allah allow his last messenger to be called a pedophile in the future? Was it necessary for Mohammed to have married a 9 year old little girl and result in being called a pedophile later on? Character defects like these and many other factors, such as the absence of miracles disqualify Mohammed as being the last prophet.

Whether she is a wife or mother, a sister or daughter, she receives a certain share of the deceased kin's property, a share which depends on her degree of relationship to the deceased and the number of heirs. She is entitled to three-fourths of the son's love and kindness with one-fourth left for their father. As a wife she is entitled to demand of her prospective husband a suitable dowry that will be her own. She is entitled to complete provision and total maintenance by the husband. The Muslim woman is always associated with an old tradition known as the "veil".

He eliminated racial and national distinctions and prejudices and upheld piety as criterion of integrity and superiority. Divorced women were looked upon as inferior in status and were not allowed to remarry in pre-Islamic era. Safiyya, the beautiful daughter of the tribe head,was one of the women captured by Muhammad. @shikanja Some Missionaries refer to this happening giving an impression as if Sayyidah Safiya (RA) was forced into marriage and was really unhappy. While the very conversation quoted above belies such a notion, it must also be known that Abu Ayub (RA) was standing there voluntarily and Holy Prophet (PBUH) had not made him to stand there as he knew the actual position of Sayyidah Safiya.

@shikanja The pious companion in his innocence didn’t know and the cunning polemicists in their evil designs run away from the fact that much before Holy Prophet (PBUH) reached Khyber the All-Wise, the Almighty had sown the seeds of the love of the Prophet in the heart of Sayyidah Safiya (RA).

@shikanja When Allah’s Messenger (pbuh) reached Khyber while Safiya was a bride at her place. She saw in her dream that a sun came into her lap. She mentioned it before her husband. He said; ‘By Allah you do not wish for anyone except the King who has come upon us.’ Allah’s Messenger conquered Khyber and her husband was killed. From that time (of dream) she loved that the Prophet (pbuh) may marry her. (Tabarani Kabeer, Hadith 19667)

@shikanja Taking together all the narrations above we come to know that Sayyidah Safiya (RA) had a feeling of affection for the Prophet (pbuh) before they met (Tabarani 19667). When her father and husband were killed in the battle she developed some feeling of hatred for the Prophet (PBUH) for natural reasons but when the Prophet (PBUH) explained to her what all her father did to him (Tabarani 19668)

@shikanja she realized that her father met such an end because of his own deeds (Ibn Saad 8/123) and so her ill feelings for the Prophet (PBUH) completely vanished and she was left with the feelings of love for the Prophet (pbuh) that the All-Wise and Almighty had put in her heart through a dream (Tabarani 19667 & 19668).
Truly unique and inscrutable are the ways of My Lord!

@shikanja In the Makkan period, when the Holy Prophet (SAW) announced his apostleship
and called the people to Islam, the conditions were most unfavorable. Some of
the people knew that Islam is nothing but truth but could not declare it in
open, because anybody who appeared to be sympathetic towards Islam, or the
Holy Prophet Mohammad (SAW), had to face the hostility and enmity of the
whole Makkan society.

@shikanja The plight of the women was much worse, because
during those days women were maltreated and their status was low. Burying
the newly born girl babies alive was a normal routine. On reaching the age of
puberty many parents used to sell their daughters to let their girls turn into
bond-maids.Cruelty of
husbands was order of the day and the fair sex was meted out the most unfair
treatment.

@shikanja . The women could not imagine of any honourable social status, they
could not generally acquire knowledge and education or embrace any faith or
creed uncommon to the society. Those were the conditions in which Hadrat
Zainab Bint-e-Jahash embraced Islam.
After embracing Islam, her life was turned into a hell for her. When the Holy
Prophet (SAW) allowed the Muslims to migrate to Madina, Hadrat Zainab also
accompanied the migrants.

“None of you is more respectable than others except by virtue of being more
pious and of good conduct”.
The history of human race cannot present another example prior to Hadrat Zaid
and Hadrat Zainab’s marriage, when a slave had married a woman of high
gentry.

agreed to it because it was being arranged at the instance of the Holy Prophet
(SAW). This marriage confirmed that a white man is not superior to a black
man, because according to Islam, superiority is always judged on merits of
piety, virtuous conduct and superior faith. Hadrat Zaid bin Harith had all these
qualities and so in appreciation of Hadrat Zaid’s merits, Hadrat Zainab was
married to him.

@shikanja At the time of her marriage, Islam was having a two-pronged orientation. On
one hand Muslims were preaching to non-Muslims about the teachings of Islam
and on the other hand the Muslims were imparted training, education and
discipline. The people could never have understood the spirit of the new faith
if the Muslims had not presented a new faith if the Muslims had not presented a
new set of codes and morality through their actions and deeds.

a slave to a woman from the aristocracy undeniably demonstrated the social
equality that Islam stood for.
After a few months of marriage, Hadrat Zainab and Hadrat Zaid developed
matrimonial differences. Divorce is not a welcome step and Islam considers it
to be one of the worst permissible acts.Islam provided a way out and allowed it
only when it is inevitable.

Zainab increased until Hadrat Zaid came to the Holy Prophet (SAW) and
complained, “Zainab is quite rude to me. I cannot pull on with her and wish to
divorce her.” The Holy Prophet (SAW) consoled him, called Hadrat Zainab and admonished
her. A few more months passed but the cleavage could not be bridged and
finally Hadrat Zaid, divorced Hadrat Zainab.

all Muslims. It proves that we should not be hasty in deciding to terminate a
marriage.
After spending a few days, everybody started asking about the future of Hadrat
Zainab. The Holy Prophet himself proposed her for giving a chance of
rehabilitation to Hadrat Zainab. This proposal created a lot of confusion as
Hadrat Zaid bin Harith had lived, with the Holy Prophet (SAW) as a son since his
childhood.
