  • I'd like to say that Hitachi/IBM TravelStars AKA DeathStars are the worst drives you could ever possibly invest in. They are made with glass platters coated in magnetic material and after some time the coating flakes off and effectively destroys the drive through head crashes.

  • My external Drive sometimes stops working and makes this noise.. i just unplug and plug it back in lol

  • @TkMToM1993

Never just unplug your drive like that dude. It could cause serious problems. Always remove it correctly, same thing with the computer itself, turn it off correctly or bad sectors will start developing early on your hard drive, internal or external.

  • I have a 500gb Western digital Caviar Blue WD5000AAKS, when it reads/writes data it is very loud. But it works great and it is very fast and runs 24/7 in my pc.

  • I had that happen before and it's sucks if you don't have a back up of your data.

I always have a back up of my data

  • that happened to me but my model when it starts making that noise it makes an ambulance noise and shuts off.

  • Your camera cannot handle that.

  • This is the scariest sound in the WORLD

  • In July 2009, my computer started telling me my hard drive might fail in the near future. I read some of the common symptoms associated with hard drive failure and have so far not countered one.

Do hard drives just die all of the sudden or can one see it coming before it dies?

  • ha ha ,your camera confused . camera:fucking focus her or there

  • I HAVE A HITACHI IT MAKES A STRANGE NOISE NOW AND THEN WHEN REPRODUCING MUSIC ... WHAT COULD IT BE ?

  • why does the camera zoom out a little every time it clicks?

  • DISCO!!! *ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching*

  • @doggiejigsaw: Well, glad to see you had better luck...............good day to you ;-).

  • God I hate that sound!!!

  • mine are WD

and it's making this clicking noise

and wont even let me get into the windows for me to backup

    what should i do.

i think i should post this in the forum

  • @bboyzshannon sorry, but your harddrive is offficially dead once it clicks like this.

a last ditch effort would be to send it to DiskSavers, but yea, if you cant afford that, your data is gone

  • This is ominous!!!

  • I don't get it, what causes a hard drive to fail when it's still able to go through all it's motions? is that when the actual reader head is screwed up so nothing shows up, and the clicking is it attempting to find something repeatedly?

  • dickcheney6: That's actually a very good guess. The heads are trying to find the zero sector of the hard drive, but when they cannot, they recalibrate and try to locate it again.

  • what were the heads doing on the platters? do you see the white object near the orange flexable pcd near the acutor arm's magnet? That's where the heads need to be when the drive is powered-down. poor thing must'v been dropped hard enough for the heads to come out of place.

  • Ive seen 3 hard drive crashes, this happened with none of them, but, rather, a long "beep of death" where the PC freezes and BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!

  • My verbatim 1000 GB extern hdd died after 2 months.

i could write on it but i could read everything! good bye

  • i get that clicking too, except it sounds a little more like "KRLK" instead of "KLK". if you know what i mean. but im kinda happy it is failing, since this whole computer is literally falling apart, so i might have a chance of finally being allowed to buy a new one or something.

  • Sniffy92: In that case, all you need is a new hard drive. You can save yourself a hell of a lot of money.

  • No worries. I have a new computer now, fast as hell. The one with the failing hard drive was getting way too outdated anyway.

  • Sniffy92: Well, even if many people do consider it outdated, I'm sure you can still use it. But of course, it depends what you'd want to use it for.

  • i had a seagate that died after about 6 months. it threw sparks at me.

  • its mad at you lol>:P

  • haha, probably, i kept reformatting it... haha

  • lol i like the way the camera tries to foucus on the arm and it zooms in and out :P

  • hitachi is the worst!

  • I have one since 2006 and I'm quite happy with it. I use it in my old PC as an upgrade to my old maxtor from 2002.

  • You're not serious right? Hitachi and Maxtor are some of the least reliable HDD brands in history. Hitachi has improved the "Deathstars" somewhat since they bought the tech from IBM, but they're still not to be trusted.

  • dkmty: Well, Maxtor's older stuff was a little more sturdy. I have one of their DiamondMax drives that was made in January 2001. 15.3GB in capacity - and to this day it is still working perfectly. But of course, I bought a 160GB one last January - in November, the spindle had jammed.

I can't comment on Hitachi. I managed to find a CinemaStar drive last month, but I've not heard anything about how reliable that is supposed to be.

  • Thats exactly what mine is doing right now, looks like i gotta get a new one.

  • That drive has a good beat to it!

But seriously, that bites. You did get five years out of it, though, which is about the average lifespan for a hard drive, give or take a couple of years.

It looks like, somehow, the heads were knocked out of the white head parking ramp to the side of the platter; when the drive was off, the heads should have been in there instead of on the platter. Looks like a servo problem that lead to a head crash.

And, it pays to back up.

    P.S. Maxtor sucks.

  • And, I know the drive in the video is a Hitachi.

    Just saying: Maxtor sucks.

  • The head is jumping about that mean hdd failure

  • it looks like the heads are trying to seat on the ram but just hit off them and not sit on them

  • yikes the head was still on the platter before it spun up. looks like it had a head crash. i think the head is supposta be on the parking ramp before it spins to the correct spindle speed.

  • Shit. This is the exact sound that my laptop is making. FUCK!!! I posted a video response. Check it out.

  • lol i like the way the camera tries to foucus on the arm and it zoom in and out :P

  • my laptop god this problem

    start DST short test

    Test result: fail

    Error code : 1000-0141

    msg: no drive detected

can someone know about this problem. pls kindly send your information thanks

  • I believe you have a dead hard drive. If the computer says "no drive detected", the BIOS is not seeing it. The best you can do now is replace it. From experience, I'd replace it with a 2.5 inch Western Digital or Seagate drive.

  • thank you

  • you can replace the heads on the drive by getting another hard drive the same as it and dismantling it. there are vids on here on how to do this or just take it into a shop and they will do it for you.

Not a guaranteed fix tho. Might be a completely different problem.

  • @TheOneEmperor: I don't know about WD. I had a computer that had at least 2-3 MAJOR malfunctions with one. Now it's dead.

  • No hard drive is safe, they all die eventually. Some are better than others. As a general rule, avoid Maxtor and Quantum drives.

  • Maxtor and Quantum are one of the best drives I have ever used. I still have several of their drives. Now if you want to say a hard drive sucks that would be Seagate.

  • i like Seagates lol. My Seagate has been running good for the past 6 years, with no slow-to read spots. I have a Maxtor that died after 2 and 1/2 years.

  • IsHeDied: But just don't go for their Barracuda 7200 series. The magnetic coating they've put on the platters starts flaking after a short time in a similar manner to what happened in the IBM Deathstar drives.

  • @TheOneEmperor Maxtor USED To be a good company, until Seagate bought them. Seagate drives are shit. I've had like 3 drives go dead on me in little over a year and they were all seagates.

  • my external hardrive made that noise so i decided not to get it fixed but to throw it at the wall in complete temper tantrum!! bloody technology , silly boy.

  • I want my baby back baby back baby back baby back baby back..........i want my baby back baby back baby back!!!!!! lmao T_T

  • my bro's laptop has a hitachi 160gb and he has problems with it the disk makes funny noises so he backs everything up on a portable harddrive.

  • That hard drive has a good rhythm going :)

My laptop has a Travelstar 120GB and have had no problems for over a year and a half now :D

  • Hitachi makes decent drives but, I would still back up often. Hard Drives are mechanical and they do wear out. I've honestly had better luck with Seagate and Western Digital. They both now have 5 year warranties on their "performance" drives, so they are better than Hitachi in that respect. If you are looking for something very quiet, Western Digital's drives are near silent.

  • After you back up the data, try to get Hitachi to replace it. HItachi makes good drives and I've only had one fail. If it wasn't an OEM (installed by a computer manufacturer) drive, it has a 3 year warranty. I have two Hitachi 7K200's that still run great, both are used as system drives. I have one in my PC and the other in a Mac. You could also try a SMART program. On Windows, HDD Health is free. On Mac, SMART Reporter is free. Good Luck!

  • i have the 160gb travelstar in my laptop and i honestly think its going to die soon..

  • What is it doing to make you think that?

  • lately its been really slow doing everyday things and if you listen to it, it makes the same continueous clicking noises even when theres nothing going on... its about a year old.

  • I'd do a full backup ASAP. Sounds like you got a lemon. I'd get Hitachi to replace the drive, as most come with a 3 year warranty. Otherwise, Western Digital, Seagate and Hitachi make good drives. I find Western Digital's to be extremely quiet and reliable but, Seagate offers a 5 year warranty. Hope this helps.

  • well the one in it is a hitachi, but i just got a 250gb simpletech portable harddrive to back up everything but its still incredibly slow.

  • same here

  • Sorry to hear that. I've lost important stuff in the past, due to hard drive failure. My first failure was an old 20GB IBM desktop drive. Since then, I've seen several die, mostly Maxtor drives.
