it is sad that certain masterpieces of engineering cease to be produced due to the fact that they are simply not "cost effective" (the Vincent Black Shadow was another such case along with the Hammond Organ).
Only one worth talking about. What a load of bollocks. A GT will get around corners as well as any SS. It'd be down to the rider. In fact it doesn't take a lot of work to modify a GT or an S so that they will pass an SS handily. Rarity, yes, but it is not the least bit special in terms of frame geometry or suspension calibration. Too valuable to ride! What a pussy.
There was round case SS on Ebay 10 months ago. Went to $150,000.oo USD ......and reserve not met. While not a daily driver, giving it the beans on any Sunday seems fair. This bike, a Vincent Black Shadow and a Britton V1000 have got to be the top three all time.
The round-case Ducati V-twins are the most perfectly beautiful motorcycle engines ever offered to the public-as much a pleasure to look at as they were to ride. I once had the pleasure of riding a 74 GT- 750 and I will never, ever forget the wonderful experience of enjoying that marvelous engine.
have read all the comments here and so many miss guided people sure a 1098 or 999 or 916 is a far better bike and a desmosedici is the ducks guts and very desirable but none of them are worth anything like green frame is a DD16 is 100k AUD but a green frame is selling for 130k plus.
maybe people should just appreciate what a milestone they were and love the look of them.
411 made actually. Well its up to anyone who owns it but if I would have one... In the meantime I make my bevel kilometers on my single and meet up loads of roundcase owners on GT's and Sports.
good video but factually not well researched, the presenter states that the next best thing to the 750 ss is the 750GT, not true of course as the next best thing is the 750 Sport which is virtually the same without the Desmo engine and bodywork. As for the 750 ss being'Too valuable to ride' don't own one if you don't ride it!
I agree with you that factual this guy isn't very accurate. His enthousiastm is inspiring but he did not listen to the actual owner of this machine. I can tell the next best thing is a S I have ridden and raced one long ago and think its the best thing. My opinion on riding it... see my other video's
@dezignhead llo. I've owned both a "73 SS and a '75 Sport and do not agree with your handling assessment. The SS handled slightly quicker. This was primarily due to the 18 as apposed to 19 inch front rims utilized on the GT & Sport. Having owned and ridden countless Ducatis of that period, I can tell you this: the smoothness and feel of the SS engine stands head and shoulders above the others: when properly tuned and adjusted they are silky turbine smooth. Regards / R. Hageman.
Nice video. One correction, however: all Ducatis do NOT "sound the same". Only the Ducatis with bevel-driven camshafts have that exquisite gear whine. The later ones with belt-driven camshafts only sound similar at the exhaust end.
Correct indeed. And do we need to mention the rattly dry clutch of the later belt driven models. Nothing sounds better than a bevel drive Duke running a set of Contis.
Too valuable? I know a guy who actually owns one of these. They are beautiful to see up close. He rides it around and uses it, though not all the time. A majority of the time is spent hidden in the garage. But nevertheless, it's a 750SS that sees the light of day. It's a travesty if it does not.
when l was a young lad in the seventies all my mates wanted japanese bikes when they grew up but there was only one bike for me(well two to be honest)the ducati 900ss with spoked wheels(and a moto guzzi le mans mark one)l ended up with niether but l still think the duke is the most gorgeous bike ever
I agree, see the Dike Blast Vid I posted. Tommorrow we have our 2007 Dike Blast and more then 40 classic Ducati's togheter. From 125 Sport, 750 SS to Montjuic
Far too valuable to ride? What bollocks! There are plenty of more valuable machines around - particularly the likes of Brough Superiors etc that are still ridden. It's criminal to leave these wonderful machines as static exhibits.
Agreed. Plenty of owners still ride their GF's. I saw one at a Concourse event in Sydney a few years back that the bloke had ridden all the way from Far North QLD to come to the event. It was ratty, no fairing and even had a pair of saddle bags! I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when I first saw it as I had always held them in such revere, but he just rode it everywhere because of the total pleasure it gave him.
Sorry mate, they don't compare. Not even close. The 916 through to 1098 bikes are fantastic, don't get me wrong but they lack that inimitable beauty of the bevel driven SS twins. Not to mention the sound comparison between a bevel and a belt driven Duke which is a total no contest. My bevel will be back on the road soon so stay tuned for video to support my statements.
