white people were so evil back then and some of them today are still so hateful... i dont know why they hate dark or brown skin people so much just because they arent pink like they are.
@FairyFederation Be careful not to generalise. Hate, spitefulness and superiority complexes are something all human beings, regardless of colour or nationality, are capable of. To answer your question, white people didn't "hate" darker people because of their skin colour. It's a lot more complex than that, and has a lot to do with the religion, science and economics from the 18th to the early 20th century. Even then, most "whites" didn't hate "blacks". It's always the top few calling the shots.
@MementoMario..... Who told you that lie?!?!....lol but, Seriously.... I have to disagree with you on this one. Think about how Black people in those days were separated by skin color, You had The Dark in the fields, The Brown in the yard, and The Light in the house.... That's why to this day theres racism in the Black community! My Mother is Black and My Father is Puerto Rican, Mexican, and Persian but, I know.... In this country, I'm still just A BLACK GUY!!!...lol.... LET'S BE HONEST!!!
@thebossld85 You're correct, but that doesn't detract from my statement. (Stubborn me. ;) Whites didn't hate blacks simply for being "black". Whites, like Queen's sister, were conditioned from childhood into believing that blacks were an inferior race.
Europeans weren't as racist as Americans at the time because their national economies weren't dependant on slavery. But Americans *needed* slavery, and by telling their children that blacks are "like animals", they didn't feel too bad about it.
@MementoMario....... The fact that you can repeat that statement " Whites didn't hate Blacks " really tickles me....lol, I'm guessing you're not of African decent are you? With that being said, If you're not.... You'll never fully understand the hate the generated from Whites to Blacks which still carry's on today..... And if you are of African decent then I do believe that you have been misinformed but, That's my opinion. Are you Hispanic maybe?!?! I'm going by you're user name...lol
@thebossld85 (1) Yes, I'm of direct African descent. :) Not American, that is, and while I do admit that I don't fully understand what it means to be black in America, I'd like to think that I in my lengthy research have done my best to study the matter of racism and slavery throughout time from all possible angles.
@thebossld85 (2) Different definitions of the word "hate" here. The person I was responding to wondered why "[whites] hate dark or brown skin people so much just because they aren't pink [...]". My response to that is that they didn't hate blacks because of their skin colour, i.e. the reasons are a lot more nuanced than that.
@thebossld85 (3) White people were taught by their environment to "hate" blacks because it was convenient for them sociopolitically. That kind of conditioned "hatred" is in my opinion not real hate, since it's spineless and based on presumptive logic. In my opinion, real hatred comes from the depths of the heart.
@MementoMario Idk where you got your info from but hate is hate no matter where it stems from. If they are taught from an early age to hate someone b/c they are inferior than that hate is conditioned from the heart. Racist white people did hate black people b/c they were black plain and simple. What kind of research are you doing lol. So unreal hate will cause two grown men to shoot, bludgeon and drown a 14 year old black boy till he's not recognizable just b/c he whistled at a white woman GTFOH
@MsKwan09 I don't agree with you. Sure, if you loosely define "hate" into meaning all kinds of things, then even believing that someone is inferior to you means that you hate them. Human emotion isn't a simple thing, though - it's fluid and blurry. Just to be clear: I'm not talking about race-based violence. I'm talking about the majority of people in this world, today and in the past, who stand by watching agreeably as horrible things happen just because they've been told these things are OK.
@MementoMario I never said Human emotion was simple and places hate can stem from are of a variety but once you decide you hate someone it is ingrained in your heart. You are putting to much fluff into this people who stand by watching are not what you stated (and just b/c they stand there doesn't mean they feel the same way, some stand there out of fear duh). You were talking about the hateful people in this movie were you not. Like I said Hate is Hate maybe b/c of my religion I feel this way
@MsKwan09 I wasn't really talking about this film. In any case, we're just arguing semantics here. I define hate differently, that's all. And again, my comment was about the sentiments of the majority of people at that time, not violent huligan racists, who - yes, I agree - are hateful. (Even then, I wouldn't say they hate blacks because of their colour. Hitler didn't hate Jews because they were Jewish - he hated them because he associated them with many of the bad moments of his life.)
@MementoMario you aren't defining hate you're naming places it is stemmed from whether it is learned, the ex. of Hitler. Hate is Hate no matter where it comes from the ending result is the same a hardened heart. Besides once that much Hate is in you it becomes a blur to why you started hating them in the first place. Racist people hate b/c of color/ethnicity (that's why their RACE(ist) in that they generate false reasons to hate like intelligence, superiority and even base it on religion.
@MementoMario Hitler didn't just hate Jews, he hated people of color period anti- Aryan who he thought of as a pure RACE as well as homosexual i.e. based on religion. The basis of his hate did stem from ethnicity. It also stemmed from self-hate. But Hate is Hate if it is named so if you so call define hate differently than you aren't defining hate you're defining dislike, preference, prejudice and ignorance. Not Hate.
@MsKwan09 That is what I am trying to tell you! I don't want to define hate, I'm talking about where it comes from. The question of what makes a person hate another person. Ethnicity is not the *reason* why Hitler was full of hatred (and he did hate Jews specifically, as evidenced by him targetting them). I have also been pointing out that there are differences between real deep-rooted hatred and "hate" like prejudice and ignorance.
um thanks for the upload been looking for this everywhere do u know if they have it on dvd I just love Alex haley work. R.I.P mr haley u were will always be loved as well as your real life stories / oh whatever threiliked or whoever you don't know what you are talking about so just take your stupid and racist remarks some where else I mean really I don't understand why racist people even come here .

Everyone thought I lost my mind, but I owe this movie and tons of others that were being shown at the time many thanks as I know who I am, who my people are and were and the brilliant potential of the future. Thanks for this upload, brings back memories!!!
Watched it when i was a child growing up loved it. I asked my husband who is a year younger than me if he ever watched it lol he looked at me as if i was crazy.
Thank you so much! I wish B.E.T would show this movie more than these other things they air on the regular....what happened to movies like these? & Roots? I'm only 20 years old but I was raised watching these kind of movies...helped shape me to do more than "Pop Lock & Drop" or "Cat Daddy"... Inspiration♥
Jasmine Guy... havnt seen this since it aired. Jasmine was good in this. Pity she fell for white piece of shit slave owner. Id have slit his throat after orgasm. Hung after punchin that pastey bitch right in her ugly face - Slap me again skank and u better sleep with one eye open.
This is a more accurate representation of the slave era where both men and women were racist. Many of the more recent film seem to suggest it was just the men who were racist.
The BEST story that Alex Haley told about his family...EVER!!! Halle Berry was the best choice to play the role of his grandmother in this series!!!! And the book is awesome too!!!!
They may have been kinder and more decent to slaves than many others were but the face remains that they still felt comfortable owning people and their slaves still had no freedom or rights. No matter how it comes packaged, wrong is still wrong.
This is such a moving series...Halle gave one of the best performances of her career. Anyone who loves the movie, I HIGHLY recommend you read the book. It goes into greater detail and is one of the best books I've ever read.
