Im ashamed to admit I didnt know this was by Sailor - I always thought it wias Roxy Music! God, I feel like the crusty old judge who didnt know who the Beatles were!
My dear old Mum loved this band - but then again, she liked Roxy Music too. She even followed Adam & The Ants during their heyday, when ex-Roxy bassist Gary Tibbs was in the line-up!
@kath61 - my mum was in her mid-40s when Sailor were at their peak in the UK. I think she liked them because they put showbiz back into rock - the same reason she liked Roxy and Adam.
I'm over sensitive..and i didn't really know what I was listening to then. Q put this song on a recent compilation & I was able to understand their peculiar charm- your Mum was right, Bless her.
Yer Mum Rocks---she definately has a Post-Punk Sensability about her. This song so strongly reeks of ABBA (ABBA-ESQUE) that I fully expected what's her name (Meryl Strepp) to sing in in Momma Mia.
George Kajanus said that "virginia plain" definitely inspired him, hence the similarities in the songs. This is such a fantastic, "feel good" song. Its impossible not to move to it. Band member Phil Pickering went on to write Karma Chameleon for Culture Club too:)
was 6 when this came out, then one day...in my 30's I thought about it while driving...just came into my head...and have played it daily while driving through the blackwall tunnel most mornings, on way to work, on my ipod! who can't not sing to this? The best.....
I heard this like so many others in the UK when it was included in the M&S ad and couldn't for the life of me work out who it was. Yep I assumed it was Roxy Music - nope - XTC - nope very similar in style to New Muzik and even considered Cockney Rebel but then found a forum on google and here I am YESSSSS what a superb track and I can see why they are still loved today. Yes I can remember Girls Girls Girls but I thought it was rubbish. I was only 5 but what did I know about music then!!!!!
IF YOU LISTEN TO THE INTRO TO THIS SOUNDS LIKE ROXY MUSIC'S VIRGINAA FIRST SINGLE PLAIN THERE MUST SOME INFLUENCE LONG RTTHWE WAY i QUITE LIKE THIS SONG
Hey Adamm77740, Scooter reworked this song for Jumping All Over The World. This would suggest that Scooter liked A Glass of Champagne in the first place. Have you written any hit songs in your little life lately?
Opening piano does sound like the opening og "Virginia Plain" (the oompah Moog kind of breaks the spell though!) and I think they're vastly underrted - witty and clever,
OK so I'm 47, but I saw Sailor in 1976 and they have left an impression on me - why else am I searching!! Cool Breeze - my favourite!! George et al I salute you!!!!
Yes, you're absolutely right. I looked for Pink Floyd and ELO using it as well but not 'til '77 & '78 - I'm a fan of both as well - so Sailor were the pioneers as far as vocal use go.
They were a fun band - I saw them in concert in 1976 and it was a good night out.
Jauly - I'm afraid you're a bit out on your dates - the first electronic pop song was Popcorn, a hit for Hot Butter in 1972 but written by Gershon Kingsley for the Moog Synthesiser in 1969. The Vocoder, although invented in the 1930's, was put to work by Robert Moog in the early '70's as well.
That´s not a vocoder. They´re just singing really low notes monotonously. Maybe they wanted the feel of a vocoder, but didn´t have one in the studio. Brilliant tune all the same. :)
This takes me back to my youth - Bought the 7" when it came out and if I recall it had a glossy carboard sleeve. This was Brian Ferry's influence I'm sure of it. George Kajanus - Genius!
I know a milliron people have said it...but yeah Roxy music la la la....

This and Girls, Girls, Girls are great songs. People called them "Roxy Music-lite" but they weren't a bad band in their own right.

lol I said one of the very first ones. sure popcorn was earlier. but this one used a one note melody as hook and had vocals.

one of the very first keyboard/synthesizer structured pop tunes. listen to the bassline, the main hook and the vocoder ;)

sorry - can't (and never could) hear any vocoder in this track...

hear the words glass of champaign were vocoded in the background under the instrumental flute like hook!

For some strange reason some XTC songs remind me of this.

I was thinking the same thing myself! The music has the old-world quirkiness of XTC and the lead singer sounds very much like Andy Partridge.
