wait wait wait... why is he casting backwards through time? surely his 9o'clock should be 3o'clock and his 1o'clock should be 11o'clock right?? never mix fly fishing with the space time continuum... always try to cast forward in time kids...

you want to teach folks how to cast put them 50 feet away from the best hole ever, they learn, heck, i taught myself fly casting by going out on a great trout stream, at the end of the day i could roll cast like lefty kereh

The San Diego Fly Shop offers Instruction for $50.00 per person.
I dunno when their classes are being offered, but lots of fly shops offer classes at the beginning of the season or during the winter.
If you can't get into a class, then try and join on a charter and get some instruction that way.
You could also join the San Diego Fly Fishing Club, or at least approach them, and see if you can get someone to go fishing with you and show you how to cast and present the fly.
i greatly appreciated the video but as a brand new novice just researching fly fishing i would like to make one small suggestion. the gentleman is a lefty and refers to the three positions as 9 o'clock, 12 o'clock, and 1 o'clock. from the camera angle they are actually 3, 12, and 11 o'clock respectively. if the video was shot from the gentleman's left then it would be 9, 12, and 1.
I was constantly distracted in this video by the nasty muddy water the guy is casting over. If I were Orvis Co I'd be embarrassed to have that in my video, especially since Orvis is mostly just a marketing machine.
not trout mate, u noob, spring fed clear water are amungst the best conditions for trout, carp like dirty water and love it, normally the reason as to why water/s are dirty is due to a heap of bottom feeding fish that exist in the water, i.e carp!
You're not really dragging the fly on the water to attract fish.. but rather dropping the fly on the surface making it look as though a fly has just landed in the water and letting it ride the current down stream.
This process is repeated over and over until a fish hits it from beneath.
It's very satisflying and a lot of fun to watch a fish come from underneath and take a fly off the surface!
Sadly this cast is so bad he is using the maximum amount of line it can handle. As the belly of the line hits the water first it stops energy transfer from turning the line over. Any extra line would land in a heap at the end.
Not a good roll cast. The rod is stopped too low, firing the line down onto the water, landing with a fish scaring slap.
Stopping the rod between 10 and 11 o'clock allows the line to roll out above the water (which is why it is called a roll cast) once the line is out the rod can be lowered the line lands gently on the water. When mastered this cast allows line to be shot giving more distance which is not possible if the rod tip is firing the line down onto the water rather than out over it.
ya it wasnt the best presentation, but looking at the VERY first roll cast he does I think he would have benefited from more line out when using that style of roll cast
yes indeed. I got together some fly fishing gear at flea markets and regular pole. This is my first week just needed some variation on summers "weeds" and monotony. As I practice blue gills are caught sometimes.... very clumsy but starting to work!
ahhh leave him alone hes just trying to show that he knows how to roll cast ripples dont matter THAT much anyway depends on the water your fishing so just ignore him
Not a very good roll cast at all. He's putting the line down on the water with too much force - look at the ripples. Any fish are going to be at the other end of the lake (unless they're surfing on the waves he's created).
as long as your cast keeps the fly out of the trees behind you and gets the fly in range of the fish. there is no right/wrong form i dont think in casting a fly...
whatever comes natural to you is what should be done with casting a fly, its obvious some people just are not made for fly-fishing and should stick to hook n worm fishing. but As long as you know that you're casting the line and not the lure, which is what most people have problems with when it comes to fly casting then you should get the "proper" distance...
id rather do whats natural too me than go out and spend $893878973 on a fly casting lesson from some know it all that probably doesnt know what hes talking about in the first place. i fly fish constantly and do alright but my brother cant figure out how to keep his fly out of the water while casting...hes not made for fly fishing even though he is a great bass fisherman. its the way it works its been that way for years...
wait wait wait... why is he casting backwards through time? surely his 9o'clock should be 3o'clock and his 1o'clock should be 11o'clock right?? never mix fly fishing with the space time continuum... always try to cast forward in time kids...

I cant figure this type of fishing.
So he throws the fly as far away and then pulls the line dragging the fly on the water to attract the fish or is ther more to it??

Well supposedly if you master the "proper" way theoretically you should be able to cast it further then 10ft.
