Look how Roddick shakes hands with the umpire at the very end. I liked that. Shows respect. Hardly any player even looks at the man when shaking his hand after the match.

Nadal is a good player, but Federer represents another "dimension" of tennis. Nadal's is a hard-hitter and he tries to pull the opponent off the field to score. Federer creates a hit/a stroke. It's like comparing Michael Schumacher to Ayrton Senna.
Roddick's is a one-dimensional player. Why doesn't he or his coach realizes that it's easier to slice a backhand with one hand than try to block with two? One hand slice give your reach, accuracy, and time to re-position yourself (look at Roger's use of the backhand slice). It simply keeps you in the rally and a chance to counter-attack. If Roddick never develops a one hand slice, he will always fail. Tennis is not all about brute power! It's still a finness game at times.
federer completely killed him here and roddick wasn't even playing bad.. I really wished that roddick would have beaten federer in wimbledon that time, i don't think he'll ever get a chance like that again at beating federer and winning a grand slam..
i was at this match in the front row on the right where the players come in. I will remember this performance from Roger for the rest of my life. Ill tell my grandkids that i saw the greatest tennis player of all time at the peak of his powers ply his trade. Simply stunning

@cj397 Rafa Nadal uses the Babolat for topspin. That's all it's good for. Roddick doesn't strike the ball anymore and 100 sq inch rackets have no control to begin with. Mid size rackets with open patterns are superior. It's a fact that you're swinging less mass through the air with the smaller more accurate head size. Even if he went from a 100sq inch piece of shit to a 95sq racket he'd play slightly better. I don't think babolat makes control rackets. Just shit for pushing the ball.

federer, quite frankly, just does not play like this anymore. i dont mean in regard to the outcome of his shots or anything, but the style of play where he would play many more forehands compared to now really is a thing of the past. what a beautiful player he was tho.

im a die-hard roddick fan,but this match is the proof of greatness. Roger Federer is the greatest player of all time,hands down. Dominating Roddick like that during a best of 5 sets match?Not easy at all. Sure,you can take andy down in straight sets,but this was just too much.Roger new where the ball was going even before Andy hit it. IT WAS TOO MUCH. He will eventually win another major...I hope

@blinkMATIC No, Roddick will probably not make it past the semis. With Djokovic, Nadal, Federer or Del Potro in the way, it won't happen. I would have liked to have seen him win the aussie open or wimbledon, but the surfaces have gotten slower and the competition too stiff.

@thisislaser People use different string patterns that give them the feel that they want and different access to spins. what does that have to do with anything? him changing a racket so late in his career isn't really the best thing when he's been playing with the same thing for over 10 years

@cj397 Rafa Nadal uses the Babolat for topspin. That's all it's good for. Roddick doesn't strike the ball anymore and 100 sq inch rackets have no control to begin with. Mid size rackets with open patterns are superior. It's a fact that you're swinging less mass through the air with the smaller more accurate head size. Even if he went from a 100sq inch piece of shit to a 95sq racket he'd play slightly better. I don't think babolat makes control rackets. Just shit for pushing the ball.

@thisislaser Control is up to the players, not the racquet. You can't just say that 100+ sq in racquets have no control especially if so many champions utilized them. Surely there's more power potential, but look at how well Agassi controlled his shots.

@NYLifeInNJ True, but Agassi had to use Luxilon string to control those rackets due to their power. These days I mostly see ball pushing. Look at Novak Djokovic. His best tennis was with a wilson mid when he won AO. Now he uses a large head racket and is no longer a favorite to win the majors. `

@thisislaser Fyi, Djokovic is still using a 93 sq in HEAD racquet. If you must know, his old "N Blade" doesn't feel anything like a true Wilson racquet. He's no longer a favorite because of inconsistency and that so many idiots still think that Murray has a shot at a title. Like I said before, strings only affect durability/comfort not control or power.

Wow Andy Roddick is a great guy but he's just not that good... He's not even an intelligent player and he doesn't even have any weapons. even his serve is not that powerful, most players have no problem blocking it back. His forehand is an example of "patting" the ball as opposed to "thumping" it like Sampas and Federer do

don't know about the years before but he's pretty quick around the court.
He plays a lot smarter and places the balls better now then the above video.
07 was the year in which he tried to stone volley everything, nice to watch but wasn't effective against the top guys.

Roger uses Luxilon Big Banger rough on the mains of his racquet. Roddick uses Pro Hurricane. That string is useless. It's only good for ball pushing. Also Federer uses a man's racquet. Roddick uses a child's racquet thanks to the sinister Eric Babolat.

actually, federer is hardly humble at all, and you can see this in all of his interviews, but he certainly does have the right of being arrogant since he has been dominant for so long. back then he had a realistic chance of breaking his opponents on each one of their service games.

Actually Federer is very humble. Some of his comments appear arrogant to the naive, but it's impossible for him to talk about his lofty accomplishments without speaking the truth. It would be like God saying "creating the world, ah, it was nothing, anyone can do it." It's about perspective.

i'm a fed fan, but even so, it's hard to say that he is humble. instead of just commenting on his game, he goes out of his way to attack others sometimes, like criticizing other people's games, including his attack on women's tennis. granted, most of those happened in 2008 and early 2009 when he was still in a slump, so it's certainly not indicative of his humility at all times. actually, he started our very humble early on in his career, and became more arrogant as his weeks at no 1 rose.

Federer shows humility in his interviews and speaks in a matter-of-fact tone. Compare his attitude to other elite athletes and he's among the most humble. Many athletes in the NFL, MLB etc are too dim to make intelligent comments so they parrot platitudes they were taught in the locker room, thus they can occasionally sound humble, or the free-thinkers come off as very arrogant.
