  • actually both of the writings are written in chinese.. the green ones are just cursive form of it

  • Astute observation! Thanks hoskinsds for noticing my little error. at 2:22, while demonstrating the move of the horse, I pushed a pawn 'out of the way'. That 'out of the way' point happened to be putting me into check, so of course, no such horse move would be allowed because I would have to first of all move out of check!

  • at 02:22 that's check.

  • unlike Chinese Chess, the Elephant is not only a defensive piece, it can move onto the enemy's side of the board and be an offensive piece. (Remember that there is no river in Changgi).

  • hoskinsds has commented that there is no river in the board. True! Although this game looks like Chinese chess at first glance, there are many differences.

  • There is no river in the board.

  • hoskinsds has commented that the cannon can not make the first move in the game. This is true! but it is not a special rule. Since the cannon requires a piece to jump over - other than a cannon - no cannon move is possible in the initial array.

  • The cannon can not also make the first move in a game.

  • Thanks for the comment. The rules regarding the kings facing each other are a little difficult for the new player to understand, and not described exactly the same in all sources. I've tried to give a clear and accurate description in my rule booklet (Free Downloads on AncientChess com site) ...

  • Well, actually, the rule has changed, and the kings CAN face each other, and if both players agree, in that situation, the game becomes a draw(in an unofficial game)

  • Where you get all these different chess game set from?

  • lol the word on the black chess piece are actually Chinese but they are in cursive form

  • LOL I see Han characters and they say....

  • thank goodness I found this. I recently downloaded a Janggi game and this really cleared things up for me.

  • Awesome tutorial!

Just one question though, you say that the first player can decide to swap their Elephants and their Horses, and the second player can follow suit if he wants to, right? So if the first player decides not to, does that mean that the second player will not get a chance to swap?

  • Yes, within the fortress they still only move in the forward direction.

  • Great channel and fantastic website! Am I right in thinking pawns can still only advance along the fortress diagonals?

  • cool
